So we can't help but notice that Apple still hasn't officially released iPhone software 2.0 for first-gen iPhones, even though most self-respecting gadget freaks have pulled it from the
direct download links that popped up earlier. Since the file was hosted and available on Apple's servers around the time it was expected for release, it seemed safe to assume that it was legit -- and indeed, it (for the most part) works fine and plays well with the
newly-live App Store. But a few of us here have had persistent problems on our first-gen iPhones: interface lag, crashing apps, hard resets, you name it. On top of that, we're hearing whispers that the .ipsw in question was meant only for 3G phones and not first-gen units -- and bizarrely, the build number of what we've got is 5A347, while our launch iPhone 3G is running build 5A345 on them. So until Apple stops being, well, Apple, and clears this all up, we're putting it to you: how are things going? Any problems, or smooth sailing? Happy you took the early plunge? Let us know in comments!
I could be wrong, but wouldn't it make sense it wouldn't work with the 1st Gen iPhone considering the 2.0 out for the 3G version has GPS built in and the hardware itself is different? Maybe there's a slightly different version for each device? I'd gather that's the same reason it wouldn't work on the iPod Touch...then again like I said I could be wrong, I don't know much about these things...just a thought!
I feel my phone is overheating after i did update only when i use app store i never have any problems before but yes after update slow phone calls and crash 2 times anybody have same problems
I have had the update that macrumors.com posted for about 3 hours. I am experiencing crashing apps and have had one hard reset. I did, however, discover the fix for the crashing Apps. You simply download a new app and POOF, all apps work again. I would also suggest you reboot after each app install before running it. Voicenotes would not even load until a reboot.
I had no prob downloading the apps but when I sync my phone, the apps dont transfer yet. I dont have 2.0 yet, i called apple they tomorrow. HELP!!
Wow.
Has anyone been having problems with visual voicemail the last two days? Mine's been on the fritz-it calls my voicemail when I tap the button...that's never happened before...
Hi, I was just wondering if it is possible to go back to 1.1.4 after installing the 2.0 leak. If this is possible, can someone please explain how?
Has anyone have problems syncing apps to an iPod touch, it won't sync with it.
I thought the iPhone wasn't supposed to act like this...
I've had not problems at all.
DIdn't get the backup option before the update (I suspect you need to press Restore in iTunes first to make the backup of 1.x firmward) as such I think I'm stuck in mucked up 2.0 land. Crashing apps, etc.
No problems at all - installed seamlessly, restored prior config, even had my custom network tag intact. Activesync setup was a breeze and works like a charm.
This is why I will be waiting a few days or weeks to drop the upgrade on my 1st gen iphone running 1.1.1 in all it's jailbroken glory!! If you ask me the new app store is with the exception of a few apps crap! I mean no iswitcher, summerboard, customize etc...
Come on apple!
I'm not having any problems at all with locking, freezing, or reboots. Oh wait, I have an Instinct.
there you go! i'm modding you up.
How do you get 2.0 today, is it coming out universally tomorrow and then will my appps sync?
I still have 1.1.4 and my phone has locked up twice today, never had that problem before. Also my visual voicemail reset itself last night and I had to redo that.
Seems kinda strange to me, almost like Apple is messing with the people who have the first iphone, so that they get frusterated and buy the new one tommorow.

i've upgraded to 2.0 and now my mail app won't load.
Upgraded my 1st Gen phone to 2.0 this morning. All works except my email accounts won't load.
Everything works like a charm for me except the camera, photos, wallpaper, and about iphone apps. They all crash out.
Um i upgraded to iTunes 7.7 last night at around 3:30 in the morning and then installed the 2.0 update on my phone early this morning. Have had no problems so far. Everything i feel is actually working a bit snappier than the previous version. Also I was using an AT&T SIM card but the iPhone itself was jailbroken. I did not experience any bricking or any other weird bad things.
am I the only one who doesn't know how to upgrade to the 2.0? my software upgrade on Itunes is saying I'm up to date with the 1.1.4.. does anyone know what time the 2.0 will be available on Itunes, or of a site that has the upgrade?
I download the iPhone 2.0 firmware and its working great for me :)
Before anyone posts stuff about the "leaked" firmware release being 3G only, or newer than 5A345, I'd like to confirm a couple of points:
1) 5A345 is listed as "SameAs" 5A347 in the Apple versions XML file located at http://phobos.apple.com/version which is used by iTunes as a look-up table. In other words they are technically almost the same build, 5A347 is just 2 compiles further down the chain so probably very little or no differences between that and the 3G firmware.
2) If you unzip the IPSW package, you find that there are two trees of firmware in there, one marked as "m68ap.production" and one as "n82ap.production". M68AP is the internal model number for the original iPhone with EDGE, and N82AP is the internal model number for the iPhone 3G. Each folder contains specific firmware for the individual models of the phone - these are different binaries. When updating from iTunes, it interrogates the phone's internal model number and will flash the correct firmware.
In other words, the rumours that this is "3G-only" firmware is complete FUD, and it is also likely that this is not "beta" either as it has been flagged as "production" release. This isn't a break from the NDA as the earlier beta firmware releases were not placed on phobos.apple.com as official version releases, just that the XML had not been pointing directly to the new firmware release itself.
I'd imagine that all the talk from blogs online has been perpetuated by Apple to stop people installing the firmware early, taking the shine off the 3G release.
I'd be very surprised if the official release isn't the same when it finally hits iTunes sometime today - possibly it may be a slightly later build, say 350, to fix some of the application memory leaks (all caused by third party apps by the way).
As for upgrading to the "official" release later, you should be able to do this by downloading the referenced IPSW file when the XML file gets updated and then "force chosen update" with the option key.
As it is, I'm on 5A347 and everything's been fine for me, apart from a couple of buggy apps from third parties that don't understand Obj-C memory allocation and garbage collection routines properly :)
Same here as far as smooth sailing with the new firmware.
I also ran iTunes this morning and sync'd my phone. I checked for new firmware via iTunes and it said that I was running the most recent version (2.0).
Again, no problems here, aside from a crash from some third-party software.
Add another vote to the "Works fine for me" pile.
I've purchased Monkey Ball, Remote, VoiceRecord, and MPG, and have tried them all out without trouble. I did have an issue where if I purchased apps via iTunes it wouldn't sync with the iPhone, even when I forced it. But when I tried downloading the same app from the iPhone, it said I had already purchased it and let me download and install it for free.
I've used my iPhone normally since the update yesterday afternoon: phone calls, SMS, tried out the new Contacts widget, camera, clock. Seems to be working fine. Seems more stable (or at least more responsive) that when I had it jailbreaked, actually.
i installed the firmware update, and my phone is trying to be restored by going to the iTunes store.. and it says 'network connection time out.. check your connection settings' .. i am online and able to go to any website, including my regular itunes store! anyone know? i need help! i cant use my phone now since everything has been taken off of it, and its only for emergencies. ugh. ..i also checked all of my firewall settings and they are turned off.
I'm having the exact same issue. Was your phone jailbroken?
nevermind the last comment.. Apple said the entire server is down, which I'm sure you all know. gah.
I cannot get my Mail App up. It keeps on crashing. I cannot even delete the mail account from settings menu. Any ideas?
i'm having the same problem
i had the SAME exact problem!! please if you have any info on how to fix let me know!
thanks
Great. Bandwidth, Apple. Pay for it.
i dunno whats wrong with mine but after installing its saying to connect to iTunes and when i do, i get a message saying itues store cannot connect to store error (-4) and my phone will only make emergency calls. i dunno wtf to do.......
this was after waiting in line at my ATT store in memphis on union ave for 2 and 1/2 hours only to be told once i got into the store all i could do is direct order it since they were out.....after i kept being told i was good to get one while i waited in line
Same problem. Music store must be dead.
@vianetman: Nope, ITMS works fine, just click on the store section and it loads up right quick. I think it's the Activation section of the ITMS that has eaten sh!t and died.
Ok I am so frustrated, I have no phone access, it wiped out all on my phone and can;t get in touch with anyone at apple or att. Just great, I think Ill skip the new iphone and wait until blackberry bold comes out. They should not have released it if it didnt work!!
After I restored my iPhone i went into iTunes and it detected my iPhone. It then came up with a screen saying setup your iphone and you could set up a new iphone or backup from an old one. The only problem is there is no button anywhere that lets u actually back it up. The screen just lets you choose either one but you cannot actually do anything. Does anyone else have this problem? I tried making my window bigger because it almost seems like the button is off the screen somewhere.
Here's my experience with the new software:
* Installing the software upgrade failed on me five times, leaving me with a brick for about 4 hours. When I switched to iTunes on the Mac instead of on Windows it finally upgraded just fine.
* Synchronizing with MS Exchange isn't consistent. I have to force it to sync manually most of the time; so far only one email has shown up on its own. My other phones (WM) sync in real-time as they are supposed to from the same Exchange 2007 server.
* MS Exchange synchronization doesn't automatically sync folders other than Inbox; they have to be checked manually individually. (This appears to be by design.)
* MS Exchange synchronization doesn't support HTML messages. Server search also isn't supported. (Also by design.)
* As the result of the three previous issues, the MS Exchange sync feature is more or less worthless to me right now. IMAP was more reliable and more feature-rich.
* My contacts and calendar entries are all showing up at least twice each, some as many as 6-8 times.
* Scrolling through long lists is now choppy instead of being smooth with 1.1.4.
* There aren't many good apps in the App Store just yet. Most of them were obviously written quickly or written by inexperienced designers. I know this will change, but for now most (but certainly not all) of the apps there are useless.
yea i have experienced problems as well with my first gen iphone too. the minute the update finished i couldnt sync email to my computer and everytime i touch the mail button on my home screen it instantly fails and the email never comes up. come on apple....
having same mail issues, did you find a solution. I get hung when creating or replying to a new message after some time. Message doesn't go in outbox or anything. If I turn the phone off and on, the mail then works...until it decides to hang.
After upgrading my 1st gen iPhone here are my experiences:
-I lost all my valuable phone contacts (uggh!!!!!) Does anyone know how to get them back or am I just screwed?
-Also, I downloaded a few apps and now some of them act like they're going to open up and then they close.
-My iPhone started heating up once and it surprised the hell out of me.
-When I try to sync my yahoo contacts with my phone I get an "unknown error (6)" message. WTF is that all about.
-I have noticed that the scrolling is a bit more choppy and not as smooth as 1.1.4.
Any helpful tips are much appreciated. I'm glad to see that I'm not the only one that has been affected by this BS! Are we gonna see the Mac guy getting punked by the PC guy now or maybe it should show him standing in line for hours to get his phone fixed! I'm so pissed about the contacts...anyone have any cheese for my wine? lol :)
I have been having a problem with 2.0! System preferences sometimes doesn't load and I have to force quit it.
2.0 is buggy as heck on my 3G 16GB. Of course, the first gen iPhone was buggy, too (I could crash Safari and iPod mode in no time flat).
The Apps have brought this to a new high. After running a few Apps just fine, no further Apps will load (crash immediately). After trying a few more times, the iPhone itself crashes and reboots. Lame. What was the point of all that hubub about not letting Apps run as TSR? Or insisting that they have to go through the iTunes store as quality control? They make the system even more unstable anyway. I feel like I'm using System 9 or Windows 95 again....
I'm also getting hellatious synch times with the 3G when connecting with desktop iTunes, as the "backup" that automatically occurs takes 30-60 min, that is, if it finishes at all. The iPhone/iTunes synch feature is broken, frankly, because of this Backup problem. Stand by for an iTunes/iPhone update that hopefully will fix the problem in the near future.
One nice thing about the iPhone's popularity is that it's going to finally depopularize this bogus notion that Apple platforms have ANY stability advantage, on desktop or mobile, over other platforms (Windows/WinMo). This iPhone may have a slick interface (and nice hardware as long as you IMMEDIATELY put all kind of protective cases and films on it as soon as you take it out of the box, which in my opinion by definition makes it a not well designed consumer electronics device), but in terms of stability it has NOTHING over a WinMo phone, despite Job's comments....
Hi, i have a first generation iphone, I got it from ebay fully unlocked to work in australia, i was wondering, now that the 3G version was released here in australia, if i upgrade to firmware 2.0 would i have to unlock the phone again or is going to recognize the simcard that I'm using now?
iphone 2.0 my mail gets hung and when i reply or create a new message after some time the mail doesn't go out, or go to an outbox. It disspears when I hit send. Only a turn off of the phone gets the mail working again.
Using original 16 gig iphone not 3G, anyone with same issue?
I have the same issue. Ever since the 2.0 update, my email has not been working correctly.
I have had sooooo many problems since the announcement of the new 3G network move on my first gen iPhone....can't answer calls, slide doesn't work...when I do sometimes I can hear them, they can't hear me...Unbelievable. Well Apple when you sleep with dogs (AT&T) you get fleas! You are using cell phone tactics. I respected the service and absolute seamless way apple has always introduced new amazing products, the iPhone is amazing and I could never go back now...but I am dejected because I KNOW CELL CARRIERS RIP YOU OFF!!! Apple is sinking to new lows and I am so worried about what the future holds now that they are under and reliant on AT&T's wireless backbone. Apple has officially become the exact opposite corporate company that we all fell in love with...The secret is out. They are screwing everyone they can...hey it's the new corporate process in our country...comes from the top. Like our good ol' boy president said in the second year of his presidency at a fund raising dinner for some oil companies tax write off..."I am at home base now. I feel at home...I am with the haves and the have mores"....look it up. Sit and spin apple.
Has anyone had a problem receiving calls after the 2.0 update? Most of the time my phone doesn't ring just goes straight to voice mail. Since the update my phone is running slowly, and I have to reset often just to get apps to work.
