Americans using mobile internet the most, RAZR family most responsible
Who says we Americans don't love our mobile internet? We don't like paying through the nose for it, but there's no denying we heart it profusely. According to new research from Nielson, around 15.6% of US wireless subscribers utilize mobile internet on their handset, while the UK ganked the silver medallion at 12.9% and Italy the bronze at 11.9%. Out of the 16 countries studied by the firm, America ranked number one in terms of usage, and oddly enough, Motorola's RAZR / RAZR2 were found as the top devices (10%) for accessing the mobile web. For those curious, Apple's iPhone came in second with 4%, while RIM's BlackBerry 8100 and 8800 series claimed 2% each. Even if you're usually not the numbers type, we'd say it's worth your while to give these a peek -- pretty interesting stuff, from a nerd's point of view. [Warning: PDF read link]

The browser on the original RAZR is ridiculously horrible. I don't understand how people can use that thing! It is such a pain!
Its called Opera Mini, dude.
lol =p
Considering the popularity of the RAZR, it seems that people just listed having a good browsing experience on it because that's the phone they own.
Wow, I'm surprised that Japan's not up there, considering how you see QR Codes stamped onto just about type of advert over there!
Yeah, that was the first thing that came to mind - 15.6%? That would seem a laughable number in Japan.
I checked out the article and Japan is not included in the study, without explanation, so I'm guessing they are so far ahead in these numbers, it was meaningless to include such an outlier.
also, since the RAZR is so popular, that probably plays a big factor in the razr deal. and opera mini ftw
So why, if the RAZR is the number 1 used for mobile internet, is the iPhone used as the picture for the article?
Exactly. Why not use a picture of a Razr? Does Apple own AOL now?
That is exactly what I thought as soon as I read the article.
I love how iPhone users are considered to be "uber media consumers"; the thing mobile consumers want most is "longer battery life"; the Weather Channel is second only to, and on par with Google search, yet Weather Channel is a VERY flash driven site that looks incredible on my N95, but not so dynamic on my iPod touch; and now "critical mass" will supervene the typical MBA's usage of "the tipping point"...
Hah! I'll betcha yer stinky drawers that the RAZRs only won because of the placement of the button that opens the browser. I think I must've hit that friggin' button 20 times in one drunken night alone...
yea thats probably the reason...
I thought it was only fitting that I happened to read this article on my iPhone. Having had several other Internet enabled mobile phones including, most recently a Sprit Mogul, I can say that the mobile web experience on the iPhone really is second to none. I used to tell myself that browsers like Skyfire and Opera Mobile were as good as Safari, or at least good enough, however I've learned how wrong I was. Mobile browsing is no longer a chore, but rather just as easy as browsing on your computer.
Also, bear in mind that the RAZR family has a long history of being on GSM and CDMA carriers in the US so obviously the market penetration for the RAZR family is going to be huge compared to the iPhone that is only on one (or two if yours is unlocked) carriers in the US.
You could say I belong in this american mobile web using thing, I use my phones internet everyday but this sanyo M1 is not cutting it anymore. Thats why I want to get myself an xperia X1 because of the WVGA display and qwerty keyboard.
I am testing if the comments system is working or if its just engadget commentating system, also I typing from my PS3 browser so I want to know if it works or not because I'm too lazy to get out of bed to turn on my computer. :p
I'm honestly surprised that the Sidekick/Hiptop isn't in this list.
Admob has some good metrics form their mobile add impressions that might add data points in. They support the razr being number 1, but rank the other phones differently.
