Unlocked iPhone 3G available for direct shipment from Hong Kong, no catch at all
Man, waiting in line for the iPhone 3G can be a royal pain, right? Wouldn't it be nice if you could just circumvent the whole boring, sheep-like process and have one delivered to your doorstep? Well thanks to Alibaba.com and the weird and wacky copyright laws of Hong Kong, now you can! According to the wholesale goods supply site, you can just order up the "original" Apple device direct from a company called Union Camera and have them sent to whatever poorly lit dock, abandoned warehouse, or suburban safe-house you desire. The best part? They're network unlocked. You know, something seems wrong about this, but we just can't put our finger on it...
Update: As some commenters point out, it seems to be $1000 minimum order as opposed to 1000 pieces. Guess we'll just have to start the process and find out.

Quantity is USD1,000 ? Didn't know that it ''USD1,000'' was some kind of quantity...
Doesnt it mean we gotta buy at least 1k USD of phones from them?
Just to let you guys know that there are tons of scams at Alibaba.com. You would have thought they are legit but after sending $1000 out to them, you will never hear from the seller again.
Let us know after you get scam. LOL!!! :-)
Engadget should really remove the heading "No catch at all" or remove the post completely. Tons of people are going to that web site and get scam.
Engadget will be doing free advertisement to those crooks.
I love the "feature set":
* iPhone 3G ORIGINAL from Apple coming soon
* GPS
* SMS
* YOUTUBE
* 8GB
* 16GB
* iPod
* Nano
* Nikon Digital camera & Lens
$1,000 Bucks is a little bit of a catch...
The balls of these crooks, hiding behind like 6000 miles of ocean! And to thing that someone will get suckered into sending them money via bank or money transfer! They deserve each other...
Are you guys going to buy one? You should and tell us what the deal is.
The author of this article has opted for a poor choice of words here.
Just how does "the weird and wacky copyright laws of Hong Kong" have anything to do with the iPhone 3G being available network-lock-free?
For those people who may be unaware of this, the iPhone 3G models being sold in Hong Kong are *not* locked out-of-the-box, or even after iTunes activation. This is a policy of the Hong Kong operator, Hutchison (aka 3 Hong Kong), who is exclusively selling the handset in the local market.
Therefore, to say this has anything to do with the local "laws" of Hong Kong is simply misleading, which are far from being "weird and wacky". I take great offence at such a statement, whatever tone or manner it may have been presented in - and I believe I speak for many people when I say this.
Note to author: It might be wise, and most definitely appropriate, for you to do some research before coming to unsubstantiated conclusions about facts and issues. Being prejudgemental is not, and should not be, the act or practice of a responsible writer - or blogger, in your case.
Seems they removed it.
And a little note.. Alibaba is just a backend for China exporters (and possible some scammers).
One thing I've noted is that it flows of (re)sellers of SIM UNLOCKERS for the 3G version of iPhone. Hmm.. I wonder..
