T-Mobile 3G service coming October 1 to 27 markets
We were already pretty sure this would be happening, but it's looking real now, if 8.5 x 11-inch pieces of paper taped to windows is any indication: T-Mobile is rolling out its 3G service on October 1 to 27 select cities. The above poster was spotted by TmoNews "outside a meeting" and, as you can see, it says, "10.1.08 3G is Coming." As far as those launch cities, we have a handy little list for you after the break. By the way, it's entirely possible T-Mobile 3G is already live in your market, though, so don't let this confuse you too much. It could just mean you're next, or, at least by October 1.
- New York City
- Austin
- NJ and Long Island
- Las Vagas
- Minneapolis
- Miami
- Dallas
- Chicago
- Houston
- Philadelphia

I've lost track of launch 3G handsets but I don't think there's a lot of them. AT&T coverage sucks in San Diego (at least for me) but T-Mobile's is a lot better. I'm sad I left, but even with 3G launch in San Diego by October, I would still not be able to use my E71 on AWS. I guess I'll wait some more.
Once manufacturers start rolling out some decent 1700 mhz handsets, I'll consider paying my ETF and come back to T-Mobile.

there's a rumor from tmonews, that there may have AWS version of E71 from T-Mobile
I'd take with grain of salt, though I am settled with SE TM506 as modem
but good to see it finally happens
If this happens I'll be one of the first in line to buy that version of the E71. As long as it's unlocked. Or at the very least not bugged down by any third party SW.
I have the E61 and E61i and went to see the E71 twice this week at the Nokia flagship store in NYC. This would be the only thing that would make me switch over to T-Mobile. If they happen to release it before AT&T.
I love to tether with my BlackBerry and T-Mobile allows us to do this without any extra charges as long as we subscribe to the BIS or Total Internet Plan.
I'm hoping they are this lenient with their 3G devices and network. I plan to get their first (good looking) 3G smartphone they launch since they have a good network where I use them here in Los Angeles.
If I could tether for free with 3G, I'd be able to ditch my $60 per month I pay to AT&T for their wireless broadband service which has proven very unreliable to me and expensive.
tethering is supported with total internet and BIS
Official GOodNess!!!! - D
I"m so VERY HAppy I am in one of the Launch Citites!!!!!!
MOtor City!!!!
WHOot!
I love how the bottom of the sign says "are you ready?".....yes, T-Mobile....we've been ready for about 3 years actually.
Las Vagas?
How about you guys learn to spell..its VEGAS..so easy a caveman could do it
Ok T-Mo... I'm still with you (even though I also have a line with AT&T for 3G)!
Perhaps now is a good time to also announce that the 3G launch device is teh SE Xperia X1?
K thx bai :)
Great beard of Zeus that would make my YEAR!
I've been seriously considering paying the $200 ETF and jumping ship to the Death Star, but something like the (SE)X1 or the Touch Pro would definitely keep me in Magenta!
Way to go T-mobile, forget all of the big cities in Ohio... Fa Q Tmob
According to T-Mobile, they are using 1700 and 2100!!!!!!!
(I spoke to them through 611. I called 10 different times once every week.)
That means that the iPhone 3G will be compatible with T-Mobile's 3G network!!!
You will get full reception because 1700 and 2100 gets the same reception according to T-Mobile.
That made my day.
Call T-Mobile if you don't believe me.
I'm going to buy the 3G and get rid of my unlocked 1st gen on T-Mobile!!!!
Actually, no it won't. First of all, T-Mobile will be using the 1700 MHz spectrum for uplink. I'm fairly certain that it is the only carrier in the world using that. So that pretty much makes it incompatible with the iPhone. But it's pretty much the same thing with the downlink as well. Yes, T-Mobile uses 2100 but it is not exactly the same as the 2100 MHz frequency used in Europe and Australia. None of the 3G phones designed for use in Europe will be compatible with T-Mobile's 3G network.
PN:
1) No one is licenced at 2100 in the U.S. This just means that both T-Mo 3G and iPhone will work in 2100 licenced areas (read: Europe and the rest of the 3G world).
2) Even if you put a T-Mo SIM in a 1900 3G device, the T-Mo account will not roam on AT&T 3G. At least not anytime soon.
Sorry!
U.S. AWS band is uplink near 1.7 GHz and downlink near 2.1 GHz. European UMTS (HSPA) is uplink near 1.7 GHz and downlink near 2.1 GHz. They are simply not the same, and that this point I'm not aware of a handset which handles both. Surely such handsets will start to arrive in the next few months.
Great news. I just joined T-Mobile here in Beverly Hills. I had AT&T, but there network was so crappy around here - lots of dropped calls (daily) and garbled conversations.
T-Mobile is like a breath of fresh air out here. CS is extremely polite and I'm saving about $ 45 per month just on my line alone. I'm also getting better voice quality and so far - no dropped calls.
I look forward to purchasing a new 3G phone to use it with my Mac notebook for internet on the go.
+1 on the "Are you ready" comment. We've been ready for years now, as the other carriers launched their 3g networks and continued to build them over the years while T-Mobile's 3g was still nowhere in sight.
Now, the other carriers are prepping their 4g launches, and T-Mobile is just now TALKING about a nationwide 3g launch in the future.
Hopefully some day they'll catch up.
Just so You're CLEAR about this SHane, OBviously you have no ideas about the details.
T-Mobile is Jumping onto 4G as fast as the "Other" carriers since T-Mo's 3G was Built from the Ground with 4G in Mind MEANING the Groundwork for 4G is already Layed out onto the footPrint of their AWS spectrum.
So basically what that means is when the "Other" carriers "Start" to bring out Nationwide 4G in 2010, T-Mobile USA will be Starting their 4G at the same time. Obviously the Only reason T-mobile's 3G was delayed was because of waiting for the Government to Evacuate the Spectrum or else they would have been right on time with the Other Companies. Obviously they HAVE the Tech KnowHOw it was more of a Waiting Game, but I guess you had no idea! Maybe you should Research a little bit more.
In FACT T-Mobile Almost went STRAIGHT to 4G but they're smart about it and want to Fine-Tune the Spectrum up a bit before so.
But then again you're Supposedly the "EXPERT" on this info......
Ahahahahahhaaa
I wonder to what extent T-Mobile's 3G coverage will be in LA... like, just LA proper or out into the San Fernando Valley northwest and southeast into Orange country and even east into the Inland Empire? I doubt it, but it would be nice.
I am also curious about Dallas. Does that just mean in and around Dallas or does that mean what they should do and cover all of DFW... I am very curious to see coverage maps once available.
Usually they mean the Main city and the Closest Surrounding Suburbs as well.
That's what I'm wondering too.
While Verizon and Sprint blanketed the LA area from the desert to the sea and the mountains inbetween, AT&T cherry picked spots half hazardly leaving large holes sometimes every other block.
Verizon counts the "LA Market," as everywhere South of Santa Barbara... northeast to Barstow..... east to the Morongo Valley, southeast to Palm Springs and South to Southern Orange County and west to Avalon...
Hopefully T-Mobile will do a broad entire LA market rollout and not just the downtown area.
btw
if you plan to use data card, check out
http://www.stelera.com
they're UMTS based ISP, utilizes AWS band, same as T-Mobile
Bandrich only has AWS 3G band, but cheaper, works very well with Cradlepoint 3G router (either express card or USB, adaptor included)
Option GT has tri (850/1700/2100, can be used in Europe and Asia) UMTS/HSPA as well as quad-EDGE, but it doesn't work well with Cradlepoint CTR-500, even with 1.3 fw (very slow)
Come on...where's Pittsburgh!?!?
Come on...where's Pittsburgh on the list?!?!?
hmmm...
Rochester and Buffalo are missing too
it should be on 3rd phase, early 09
Yeah! Denver is on there!
I really hope Boulder is part of "Denver"
Now do you have any phones that support AWS?
My SoCal T-Mobile Store said the initial 3G roll out will not support DATA! It will be for call quality improvement only!!!
This has been the subject of much debate on the cellphonesignal.com forum. When it launched in NYC a few months ago, it was supposedly voice only, or so said T-Mobile. The consensus seems to be that the handsets just don't support it yet since they're basically dumbphones (like the Nokia 6263). But, a few people claim to have tethered with it and pulled some pretty solid speeds.
http://www.cellphonesignal.com/forum/t-mobile-3g/
come on, wheres Honolulu, Hawaii?
they better make it in the 3rd phase list...
We are always last to get anything in Hawaii.
I spoke to some representatives at the Tmobile store on Oahu and they said 3G is coming this summer to Hawaii. But I too don't see Hawaii on the list..hmmmm
in chicagoland area, i checked with tmo store in schaumburg and they said they'll have 3g in october. what that essentially means that a market is limited not just to the main city/downtown but to surrounding suburbs as well.
schaumburg is about 30 miles N/W of Chicago downtown.
but we'll have to wait and watch when its implemented.
Detroit??? I figured all their equipment would've been stolen by now.
BTW -- born and raised in Flint ;)
Re:T-Mobile frequency incompatibility US/Europe-Rest of the World
Some posts claim that the 1700 and 2100 frequencies will be somehow different in the USA and elsewhere with the result that US 3G handsets will not work in Europe.
Is that so?If it is what is the commercial logic for T-Mobile-originally a German carrier- to have its subsribers unable to use their phones worldwide?Wouldn't that defeat the purpose of GSM/MTS?HSDPA?
Next:which handsets ( with keyboard please) are forecast to be able to work on the new T-Mobile 3/4G infrastructure?
Too bad they dont have any 3G data cards yet.
I am leaving to Europe tomorrow and could use this service
BTW. Anyone knows if there is a "roaming" charge for using 3G data in Europe?
Also if I just get a sim card and a data plan will this work on a unlocked European (T-Mobile) 3G data card?
$15 per MB roaming charge in Europe
It's October 1st, where's my 3g?
If i have a 3g iphone and am on t-mobile in a 3g area. do i need a 3g sim card from t-mobile in order to get 3g speeds?
http://www.t-mobileg1.com/3G.aspx
Now it's by October 22nd, 3G will be rolled out to the the above cities.
They also added Baltimore to the list! Although the list of cities on that link is a little different than what's posted on this site.
Here's an official interactive t-mobile USA map of their current coverage and signal strengths:

Check out the Tmobile / Google G1 open source phone too
Actually, the license for T-Mobile 3G is for the 2100Mhz AND the 1700Mhz. T-Mobile is probably going to develop using both bands, eventually.
Confirmed!!!!!! Pittburgh has 3G as of now!!!!!!!!!!!
