The New York Times has a little puff piece on Palm to accompany the launch of the
Treo Pro today, and buried between the fawning references to Jon Rubenstein's former gig at Apple and how that's affected his management style ("He made them redesign the battery panel on the back so it didn't squeak. And he asked for fixes to the software so it would lock up less frequently." -- solid work, homey) there's a little tidbit about how Palm OS II and a single new device to run the new software will arrive in the "first half of next year." Two things interesting about that: first, that's a much wider timeframe than the
"early 2009" window we've been hearing for a while and could signal even
more delays, and second, it's a little odd that Palm is going to debut the new OS on just one device. Launching on a single device is pretty Apple-esque, so we'll cut Rubes some slack on that, even if we don't think it's the best idea -- but at this point the only real info we're hearing about Palm OS II is
news of delays, and that's not exactly out of the Jobs playbook -- remember, real artists ship.
"solid work, homey"
Ah, come on! It's 'homie'. What n00b spells it 'homey'? ;-)
What a crying shame. I've been a faithful Palm user since 2001's Palm IIIe, but I just can't wait months after months after months for a new Palm OS. I currently have a 755p and the contract is up in January 2009. I was hoping to get one of the new Treo's with the new Palm OS2. Guess I'm not now.
Looks like I'll be converting over to Windows Mobile 6.1. Sorry Palm I can't wait forever.
Why do they look like cardboard cutouts?
Note to Palm: Put this on the Treo Pro, and get it out ASAP, or I'm switching to Symbian.
Which will come out first - Palm OS II or Guns n' Roses' "Chinese Democracy"? Are both of them really elaborate psychology experiments being performed on society? We may never know.
Um, technically, isn't "the first half of 2009" exactly equal to "early 2009"?
I mean, if you take "early 2009" to mean "any part of 2009 up to the mid-point," that's pretty much the first six months...or the first half.
What other interpretation to "early 2009" were you making, guys?

Just the fact that they posted a story about timelines slipping means things are not well in Palm Land. Face it - there will be no Palm OS 2.0. Next we'll hear about key people leaving, then a shake-up in the software division, some hand-wringing and gnashing of teeth, followed by the inevitable admission that it is indeed over. Time to embrace Android. It's either that or get real cozy with Windows Mobile.
This can only mean one thing! Da Foleo is BACK, suckas!
1st third - first 4 months.
2nd is "mid".
3rd is "late".
We just upgraded my wife to a 755P from Sprint, only to discover that the sync software does NOT support 64bit Vista installations. Special, only been out for how long - a year or two? Gather the same problem for an earlier 64 bit software version. Gather there is a workaround through bluetooth sync, if you buy a bluetooth adapter for your desktop, but gosh, it blows. I've had Palm devices for probably eight years, but this will be the last if they can't get their software act together. It is just a shame, they had such a lead with third party software, probably the main reason I continue to carry a Palm PDA along with a Blackberry. So long Palm, we'll miss you!
