The Nokia 5800 XpressMusic
While it may not be Nokia's first touchscreen phone (anyone out there remember the 7710?), the 5800 XpressMusic is certainly the first to come out of Finland with a mainstream appeal. What we've alternately known as the "Tube" throughout much of its development cycle is the first production device to run S60 5th Edition -- the fourth major overhaul of Nokia's ubiquitous smartphone platform since 2002 and the first to support fingers, styli, and high-res displays. Speaking of high-res displays, the 5800 comes equipped with an impressive 3.2-inch 640 x 360 resistive touchscreen to go along with its 3.2-megapixel autofocus cam, Carl Zeiss optics, dual LED flash, GPS, WiFi, 3.5mm jack, and a microSD slot with support for 16GB cards. It'll be available in three versions -- European HSDPA, North American HSDPA, and GSM only -- and ships this quarter in black, red, and blue for €279 (about $392) unlocked with an 8GB card thrown in for good measure. Music fans with voracious appetites for new tunes might want to hold out, though, for the Comes With Music-equipped version that follows on "early next year" at a to-be-announced price.

Does anyone else want to know why there is a Nokia guitar pick on the strap?
I think the guitar pick is for using the resistive (plastic-y-push) "touch" screen.
It's basically a cool way to keep a stylus with the device.
Medium range and fueled with all the required featured (the only lack i see there is a 5mPx camera), easy to use interface, nice design and quality build for all it seems, this will be a killer !!
I think it is supposed to show off the fact that it is a music-centric device
I've been waiting a while to see a reincarnation of the 7710...I loved that phone (although the support for it sucked), Nokia sucks for ditching it.
This is nice though.
Former Nokian here, and still have my Series 90-powered 7710. It's surprisingly capable for a 4 year old device. 640x480 touchscreen with a (relatively) attractive UI, Opera Mobile, 1MP camera with video recording, etc. I'm still a bit sad that Nokia killed the entire platform.
Might just have to pop my SIM card out of the iPhone 3G and into the 7710 for old time's sake.
Let's have it subsidized with T-Mobile 3G flavor and it may be an ok device (until it matures)
Oh this is sweeter than I expected... I'll be getting my hands on this soon!
I've never used a Nokia device before but this looks like a winner.
Problem is, Nokia has already labeled this a 'mid-range' device. That just makes me want to wait for the 'Flagship' model, so I can't buy it.
Here I was considering a more expensive phone. Thank you Nokia for putting out a great priced phone that has the features I want (WiFi and good music support). Oh happy day!
the high end device can only add :
- higher resolution camera with a real flash
- mobile tv like in the n96
- a bigger screen (which implies a bigger form factor)
The only lack for me here is a better camera. Even if 3.2 won't be bad, i'm used to my n95-8gb :-p
Resistive touchscreen? Why??
goodbye iPhone! I'm getting this.
hello
I used to be Nokian...
The symbian OS is the prob.
Even 5gen S60 cannot and will never be able to
compete with Mobile OSX.
100 (hundred) million apps sold through appstore in 3 (three) months.
Will Nokia ever do that?
I trust Apple to maintain the techno-gap as long as needed, so I don't see myself
going back to Nokia, even though I'm a Finn.
Worst of all is that a couple of years ago they snobbed Apple wanting to co-operate with them. How plain stupid is that?
Nokia! I command you RELEASE THIS PHONE NOW. kthx.
with wifi, it wont cost you on your plan, so you can use the next etc.?
gps costs as browsing?
seems a next best choice after iphone
but i still doubt nokias usability of interface and smoothness
but like i said, its the next best choice in my mind
I had the N95 and then the N95 8gb and I loved them both but in the end I could'nt stand anymore the bloated , buggy Nsuite software and that's why I will stay away from Nokias for the time being.
I tried Iphone , and ditched almost immediatey (the fact that you can't even use it as modem for a laptop is a bad joke).
So tomorrow morning I'm gonna go and get my new Samsung Omnia.
I agonized a bit if to get the chaper HTC diamond or diamond pro (no HTC HD or subsides for the Omnia in scandinavia).
But now my decision is taken. I'm goin for Omnia, Nokia has to take better care of its PC suite software.
