FCC approval ensures American Sony Ericsson X1 users aren't bandits
Now that Sony Ericsson's mighty X1 has earned the FCC's love and affection, you won't be an outlaw for using one in the States -- but unfortunately, you won't be a speed demon everywhere, either. The version that just nabbed approval here is the X1i, and anyone familiar with Sony Ericsson's naming scheme can tell you that an "i" means a phone's not really meant for North American consumption; in this case, we're lucky to squeak by with UMTS Band II support, which means we'll theoretically be able to pick up some of AT&T's 1900MHz signal. On 850, though, you'll be stuck with EDGE. Of course, a true global launch has been in the cards for the X1 from day one, and we're not worried that we won't see a more 3G-rife model getting torn down by the feds -- this just ain't it.

Yes, you need the X1a to work on T-mob. A shame they didn't just make one universal device. Link below comparing the specs:

OK, something is off here! The SE USA website specs for the X1a show a 1700 UMTS band. If so, then no issue working on T-mob ~ even though T-mob has some reports of supporting 2100Mhz as well. I didn't see the 1700Mhz band tested by the FCC. Anyone know if 1700Mhz truly will be supported?

Is it just me, or do the soft keys/navigation keys look horrible to use?
...Nokia Tube, here I come.

What the heck, what happened to quadband UTMS?

actually
X1 and X1 will work with ALL GSM service
however, both don't support WCDMA IV, which is used by T-Mobile and Stelera
SE is caught pants down
First of all, the Xperia X1i manual, that most of you are reading is not the final production manual. Next, the Xperia X1i version is actually not for North America and you are not suppose to see T-Mobile's 3g 1700/2100 MHz band on the Xperia X1i.
When the Xperia X1a, the North American version hit the shores of the USA, it will have 850/900/1700/1900/2100 UMTS bands. What the FCC did for SonyEricsson's Xperia X1i was to give the right to be sold and use here in the USA. Although, the Xperia X1i can work on two North American networks, namely AT&T and Rogers. You will have people coming into North America from other countries with the Xperia X1i and they still will be able to use their phone with a sim change. I see on a lot of blog websites, where people are clearly taking the FCC Xperia X1i documents totally out of context. I believe Engadget explains it in the above article that the Xperia X1i FCC documents are for the Xperia X1i ONLY and not for the North America Xperia X1a version version.....!
