1.5 million T-Mobile G1s already pre-ordered
T-Mobile sold right out of its original allotment of G1 pre-orders quick, fast and in a hurry, and even the second round has been claimed in a flash. What's it all mean? It means that someone at T-Mobile and Google are sitting in a fancy restaurant in France sipping on the good stuff, and it also means that 1.5 million G1s have already been reserved for eager early adopters. In addition to that, another couple of million are all set to take the retail scene by storm later this month. In other words, folks are genuinely stoked about the possibilities of Android, and scads of 'em have already committed to the OS (and HTC's design, by extension) before even having a chance to toy around with it in person. No pressure at all, Google.

Just for the record Nokia fanboy here... and now on to the comments.... All I have to say is "Take THAT APPLE". iPhone can take a hike now :-)
I assume these 1.5m T-Mobile consumers are in Europe ?
I agree ;D
Because if you take a step back and take a breath to clear out your mind and think fair. And not take sides.
Just add everything together. Add all that the iphone did. Blah blah blah you know.
Now take a look at the G1. and see what their tryin to do with their phone.
Iphone is at its peak. Nice lookin, Touch screen, and wat not.
And ofcourse it was trial and error but it took time.
And now look at wat the G1 is doing its not all that compared to the Iphone But its the first step of the google phone. And it can do pretty much wat the Iphone can do already and it being the first step wat does that say about the future for the google phone serious so people can say whatever they want about the G1 cuz in the long run there goin to feel Extra stupid when the google phone is superior to the Iphone and ofcouse there are going to be better phones than the Iphone. so dnt hate people jus be happy there makin better and kooler phones. ;D
I've been working with cell phones for over 3 years and I honestly have to say this is the funnest phone I've ever handled. Plain and simple. T-Mobile is doing the customers an injustice by not alllowing it to be sold in all of it's stores regardless of the 3G coverage.
October 22nd can't come soon enough.
Wow- I can't believe I got a comment in before the Apple guys.
Listen- nobody is going to force you to give up your iPhone. The Android platform will in no way "kill" the iPhone platform. I think that the Android OS "may" claim more total market share in the distant future- but, why should Apple fans care?
I don't think you should care one bit.
Apple products are like Audis. They're well designed, well executed, and expensive. If you look at the specs, you can get much better vehicles for less money. But, Audi customers are buying the package. They're not buying the stats. They're willing to pay more to get the Audi experience. Apple customers are the same way, they want the Apple experience.
So- fear not, flame not. G1 and iPhone can exist in Harmony. Both will make money, and both will make their consumers happy.
Okay, but WHY is it so amazing??? Nobody is saying just why...
I must say I'm anxious to get a stab at this phone. I'm trying to convince my sister to get it so that I can experience it vicariously (I'm sticking with my UMA-enabled Curve 8320 until the Javelin/Curve 8900 comes out).
Personally, though, I think the phone looks ugly. Not gouge-my-eyes-out ugly, but definitely not pretty. HTC has done much better--namely of course the Touch Diamond and Touch HD.
half of that will be returned jus like sprint and that instinct so many preorders and so many returns.
Bury me if you want but I find that ugly.
I have owned 2 bmws, a mercedes and an audi. I lioved them all except for the audi. There was nothing special about it and I was bored with it after a year.
The iphone is much more creative than anything audi would come uo with, I love my iphone and nokia n95 but cant wait to try android
Would you care to elaborate? I'm trying to see what the draw is. The form-factor is hideous, and I'm big on HTC--plus being left handed the thing seems a little biased but we put up with the right-handed world as we must in so many other aspects of life...
But I've read your previous posts and you seem to have your head on straight, so please share with me what it is that's so much fun about it.
A few months ago, a guy on the cellphonesignal forums was talking about the insane download speeds he was getting by using one of the few AWS-enabled phones T-Mo has as a tethered modem. I'm just bummed that all 1.5 million of us are basically going to hit the network at the same time so god only knows what'll happen then. I was hoping to get a piece of the early action.
The figure of 1.5 million phones cannot be correct. I'd love to know who the original source of that figure is. The last call that I was on had the number in the low 6 figures. 1.5 million seems absurdly high.
about this G1,people may not want to admit the google phone is superior to the Iphone ,in fact, it's possoble that there will be phones better than iphone in the future.
As much as I want Android to succeed, I agree with phone lover. This figure can't be true. T-Mobile would be shooting official releases all over the place to trump this figure. Hell, they'd be dancing in the streets.
Think about it: Apple iPhone 3G is one of the most buzzed-about products of all time - particularly in the casual market - and it sells 1 million units in 3 days in 20+ countries. Do you honestly believe that the G1 - which is promising but by no means as sexy in the casual market - has already outsold that? Besides, only existing T-Mobile customers can buy it.
Logistically, I don't think HTC will be able to get that many out by the fourth quarter, not to mention the launch day and a few weeks after. And do you notice how every single story about this on the Web points to a motley fool article:
"The first shipment of the T-Mobile (NYSE: DT) G1 sold out through preorders from existing T-Mobile subscribers, so the company tripled its order to Taiwanese handset maker HTC. The bigger batch sold out, too.
That means that about 1.5 million G1s are destined to fill preorder sales, in addition to another couple of million sets being earmarked for retail sales."
So, basically he makes up that figure. Also, it's actually pretty difficult to make millions of brand new handsets, and I sincerely doubt HTC, Google, or T-Mobile had the wherewithall to order the "couple of million" for the retail sales.
