Google opens the floodgates, open-sources Android
Making good on a promise it made at the very beginning, Google has today announced that the source code underpinning its Android platform for mobile devices is available for free to anyone who wants a crack at it. The code is being provided through the newly-announced Android Open Source Project, which will give the public at large the opportunity to make contributions to the platform's all-important core -- a first for a mobile operating system with true mass-market appeal. Theoretically, the move should position Android to benefit from a fairly democratic, speedy evolution, and it'll also give anyone with a few spare chips lying around the chance to build a smartphone of their own without shelling out a dime in licensing fees. We're really looking forward to seeing Android pop up on a whole bunch of devices for which it was never intended -- but we have to admit, in a sick, totally twisted sort of way, we're looking forward to some truly deranged individual porting Windows Mobile to the G1, too.

I just received my G1 but I am not so happy because i just found out I will not be able
to set up any of my email accounts on my phone only the gmail...So for anyone out there
that have a few email accounts like I do think about it you will not be able to set up any of
your email accounts......
there will probably be an app to address that eventually. i dont have a G1 (no T-Mo service where i live) but i only use Gmail anyway so it wouldnt be a problem for me personally. all my other email accounts i have set up to forward important stuff to the Gmail account. so much easier than checking multiple accounts.
This doesn't work?

"E-mail: The T-Mobile G1 features a rich HTML e-mail client which fetches your e-mail in the background from most POP3 or IMAP mail services."
What email are you using that doesn't have POP3 or IMAP access? I also read that you should be able to get Yahoo! email on the G1 (which normally reserves POP3 access to only paying accounts)
I'd try researching that one a little more before giving up on it.
well i thought that was kind of odd that a smartphone in this day and age didnt have POP3/IMAP access support. on my Q9c, the only email it shows out of the box is my Outlook email (which is coincidentally linked to my Gmail account anyway) but a quick trip to the settings menu allows me to add more email accounts (most of which auto complete setup with me simply entering my email address). either way, hope you find a solution to your problem.
I got my g1 on Monday, and I am throughly impressed with the delivery on google's word. I have managed to set up my google account, all my 3 other accounts (yahoo and hotmail) using the email app from and today the video player is out, playing mpg4, 3gp and a couple of music formats. So, to all of you commenting, check your application store FIRST, and go through everything out there, 'cause man - this little android is a bundle.
My complaint is not the phone, but the network which seriously needs to beef up both on speed and accesibility cause I'm in New York on and of 3G network all the freaking time. i suspect it's still a baby, but hell - tmo had ENOUGH time to prepare.
LOL that truth is the funniest thing i ever heard haha, those perverts! lol
It's not a difficult task, all you have to do is click on the email icon in the drawer next to the gmail icon.
