WiFi certification: pretty strong evidence Verizon's Omnia is WiFi-equipped
There's some ongoing debate as to whether Verizon's upcoming version of the Samsung Omnia, the predictably-named SCH-i910, would feature WiFi. In general, Verizon's historically just been about the least WiFi-friendly of the major US carriers, so prevailing logic had us believing (pessimists that we are) that the Omnia would rely on EV-DO alone to go about its high-speed data business, too. Ah, but wait -- there's this little matter of a WiFi Alliance certification proudly proclaiming the i910 as a "Phone, dual-mode (Wi-Fi and cellular)," which would suggest that there's an extra radio up in there somewhere. Of course, Verizon could go ahead and disable that circuitry in software before they drop it on a store shelf, but with that giant heart of gold of theirs, would they really sink so low as to disable it? (Don't answer that.)

They better not keep denying me wi-fi. If so, im soon to make like a baby and head out.
so whens it coming out?
Strange, the last two Samsung PDA devices released by Verizon have been wifi equipped. So, why won't this one be? And can someone tell me which of these companies, at&t, sprint, or verizon, have more wifi devices?
Probably AT&T. Either because WiFi is technologically not too friendly with CDMA, or because CDMA is considered by some better for data and GSM not so good. Seems like a lot of GSM phones have WiFi. Especially AT&T. Their hi-speed data coverage is slim in the states. So it depends on it. I think.
for all you dingleberries that insist that verizon removes WIFI from their PDA phones, lets list the phones that have been WIFI equiped.
XV6700
XV6800
i730
i760
i own the i760, and i use the WIFI whenever I am at home, nd it works like clockwork. its a battery hog, but it works.
I can confirm that it does indeed have WIFI. Had on in my hand just the other day and was able to turn it on, see a bunch of secured networks then turn it off.

I have one in my hands too right now but I am not supposed to talk about it.
I'm trying to remember if there has been a phone that's had WiFi on Sprint but not on Verizon. I know the GSM Blackberry models often have WiFi, but we haven't seen a CDMA one with WiFi so Verizon's not totally to blame there. Neither Sprint nor Verizon's HTC Touch had WiFi. I don't think Verizon's really that set against it; it seems like more of a CDMA versus GSM thing.
nope. not a one.
with the exception of current sprint exclusive Treo 800w
which from what ive heard rumors of treo's that arnt the centro wont be coming around the bend for VZW
I guess they really to read the tips we send in
It's not going to mattet cuz the big VZ Dubs is going to start requiring internet packages on ALL of their PDA's starting in mid-November. Even with wi-fi, you're still going to have to shell out $29.99 + for EVDO service.
Not doubting you, but do you have a source? I hadn't heard about this.
i will doubt that statement. there is no way verizon would turn off potential data customers by REQUIRING them to get a data package on a Q9C or something like that. VZW would rather let someone have a smartphone, have them rack up a decent bill one month, then convince them it would be smarter to pay for the data plan than pay per KB. Which if you use a smartphone for what it is intended, is the way to go.
Only blackberries require them, due to some way they interact with the system. I dont have the details on that and probably never will.
im gonna call BS on what OH Well! posted.
Just wait and see. Any new phone sales, esn changes, or upgrades to pda's will require a minimum of a $29.99 Data feature come mid-november. when it happens and you find out, just remember where you heard it from first and then think to yourself..."Boy am I a tool"
Nov 16th is the date for "you must have a data package," If you do not have a data plan with your current pda you are not required to have one, but if you upgrade to a pda you must get a data package. Which in my opinion means Nov. 16th means something is coming besides a data plan.
I would have to agree with coldbluded about that, the bb storm is coming and all the teenies are gonna want it, what better way to make money than off of kids who's parents buy their love.
yeah, its called "email and web for blackberry" the least expensive data plan for a blackberry.
if you refer to my earlier post, a data plan is REQUIRED on a BLACKBERRY not a PPC or smartphone.
this is like talking to a f-ing post.
Did you not read any of the above posts? VZW is going to start requiring ALL PDA's including NON BLACKBERRY devices to carry a minimum of a $29.99 data plan. Comes in mid-November.
yeah i read the posts. and I am waiving the bullshit flag.
oh well is telling the truth, whether you agree with it or not. I don't have the source document as I didn't receive it, I just read it. Don't expect any new PDA/smartphones until this comes to pass either.
And why wouldn't they? RIM and Apple have been hugely successful despite this requirement. Clearly people will pay if they have to. Furthermore, Omnia sales could cannibalize Storm sales and result in less valuable contracts.
Either way, it WILL happen. Don't say you weren't forewarned.
My local Verizon store has had the policy for years of not selling you a PDA/smartphone unless you get a data plan. I've heard the salesmen tell customers if they want a one without a data plan, they'll have to order it online because they don't want to deal with the problems people have with them without a data plan.
