Verizon wants you to know why you shouldn't buy the G1

[Thanks, Carter]

"Satisfied" iPhone 3GS owners
Of 200 iPhone 3GS users polled in August, 2009, 99 percent termed themselves "satisfied," with 82 percent saying they were "very satisfied."
Now that we've thrown 'em off the trail, use the form below to get in touch with the people at Engadget. Please fill in all of the required fields because they're required.
Verizon: always first to point out flaws in competitors' devices, but won't acknowledge flaws in theirs.
It's called sales moron. They'd be fools not to do this.
yeah, first and foremost...they could start getting devices that "high end" users actually want. i'm a bit of a winmo user, but i'm not gonna put that in stone, but i can't think of a verizon device that i'd actually LOVE to have. sure there are some that you'd settle on, but there isn't anything like the iphone, at&t fuze (touch pro), G1, or even a SIDEKICK to get your pulse pumpin. i guess i could always settle on the Dare, the girl walking on the ledge in that commercial is pretty hot
Of course it's a sales move. But instead of saying "Our phone has "X" feature" they're saying "Their phone doesn't have "X" feature". So they'll tell you that the G1 doesn't have a video recorder or stereo Bluetooth but they won't come out and say the Storm doesn't have WiFi.
Exactly! Sim'less CDMA can get dee's Nutz! Aye yo V, come back when you graduate to LTE!
Ryan, this is an internal memo to VZW employees... are you that stupid? VZW isn't hiding that this doesn't have WiFi and their employees are well aware of it, but since when is it such a fucking sin for a company to teach their employees the shortcomings of a competitors phone?
If I were Verizon instead of being so concerned about the G1 and teaching its limitations to its sales force, Id go back to basics and teach them that IM Caht is not considered a part of the data plan. I left Verizon after 2 reps lied claiming IM chat was part of data and that i could drop text only to find out I was being charged for text messaging evey time I used Aim. They also give way free Motorola W755's but when one fails for no reason replace it with a used one. I will give tmobile the benefit of the doubt at this point and with googles backing and open source hope they get the network and shortcummings fixed in a year.
I have a question to anybody that can answer it..and it may sound stupid but I have verizon now and the service is great but i am dying for the g1 phone from tmobile..is there a way to unlock and convert the g1 and then use it with my verizon service i know that certain companys like att and tmobile use sim cards..and verizon and sprint dont but is there a way to do it:(
YOU'RE A DINGDONG!
Is there ANYTHING on this list Verizon can claim that they offer other than corporate e-mail/Exchange support?
Their "3G" (EVDO) isn't even as fast as T-Mobile, is it?
T-Mobile and AT&T's 3G seems pretty much on par with Sprint's EVDO Rev.A, so I can't imagine Verizon's network being any faster.
I went to the AT&T store and played with the 3G iPhone and ran a test against my Dare - Both had full bars and 3G. My Dare still loaded numerous pages faster and there was less of a delay in my Dare.
You know a device is successful (iPhone and G1) when you have a dedicated smearing campaign just for you.
I bet the Storm isn't going to live up to it's expectations as well.
Yeah, you're kind of surprised they don't accuse the G1 of "palling around with terr'rists"...
When will Verizon learn LOL!!! This is too much, I have a G1 and love it! For the price and what you get from it, it is truly awesome. I'm in LA my 3G coverage is unbelievable and this is pretty much throughout Socal. As for the Storm, I went to the release party. Is it just me or did they drop the ball tremendously on the functions of this phone. Maybe they just did it on purpose to see what people thought of it without the bug fixes (who knows). I took my G1 in to compare and other than the screen the Storm has nothing on Android. While waiting in line to actually test one, people were asking me how I liked my G1. Not to brag (even though I think I already did), but other than the minor things that an OTA can fix I am finally really happy with my phone.
This from an Ex-iPhone owner.
I am Rocky La Vine and I endorse this commercial ;)
I would guess that verizons evdo rev. a is as fast or faster than tmobile's 3g.
This really doesn't sit well with me. Do they REALLY think their Storm is that great? Honestly? This coming from a company that strips down their phones and takes away the pure glory that the original phones are capable of. I can list many flaws with the Storm! Verizon you are NOT "Holier than thou"!
Matthew 7:3 "Why do you see the speck in your brother's eye but fail to notice the beam in your own eye?"
And that is one HUUUUGE beam VZW!!!!!!
I knew a comment like this would come up... nowhere in their ad mentioned the BlackBerry Storm.
This is not a comparison between Storm and G1.
For all you Verizon lovers, I forgot one more thing:
The real reason the BlackBerry Storm doesn’t have Wi-Fi or tri-band HSDPA

I don't think I am going to be losing any sleep over lack of WiFi since everywhere I live and travel is blanketed with 3G coverage. Nice try though, tool.
Tmobile sucks! I don't even have Verizon and I know they are the
best. CDMA is faster, better call quaility and cheaper but they
shuggle with keeping a UI that is native to the phone. Verizon
biggest problem is that they have to use the phones propitary
software and not put there own 90's UI on it. If they start doing
that I would drop AT&T in a second... and if they would release
phones when they are not already fully saturated in the market
alreay (how long did it take verizon to get the razr "very long" but
it was the best one minus UI) My point is Tmobile will never be a
major player in the adult world of PDA/smartphones. I think that they
shold market to what they know best (young urban teenagers) and keep
pumping out 2g phones with all the colors of the rainbow and they
might not loose your market share.
"...CDMA is faster, better call quaility and cheaper..." lol, you gotta be kidding me. I Guess you missed the CDMA in WCDMA (3G/UMTS/HSPA) if you wanna look at it like that....Verizon is cheaper than T-mobile? Since when? lol, hell even AT&T offers more on voice, rollover, in addition to M2M, NW etc.
Damn it, I'd written a reply to this but it was eaten by a computer monster. This is a recap:
First, go a little bit slower when you write stuff because what you say is a little confusing. Not criticism just a suggestion.
T-Mobile may suck for you, but don't assume that means they suck. The have extremely faithful and loyal fans that are also very vocal. That isn't just because T-Mobile sucks.
No one's the best dude. Sprint is the best where I am coverage wise, but if you look at the whole country their native coverage area is pretty small. Even if they don't have more than a speck of coverage in Maine, I don't really care because I don't live there or go there on a regular basis. Verizon has a lot of coverage, but for me that's not the most important thing in a carrier.
As for sound quality, that is not as simple as GSM v. CDMA or WCDMA/UMTS v. CDMA. I used to carry two phones: one AT&T GSM, and one Verizon (CDMA obviously). It seemed like Verizon always had a bit of buzz/static sound in the backround. AT&T GSM generally didn't (although it wasn't great either). Then I had the chance to use Alltel's network (CDMA) in Virginia for a bit. The clarity seemed amazing to me.
The reason for that depends on how many calls the network is handling, what kind of phone you have, what kind of phone the other person has, what compression technologies and voice codecs are being used on the phone and the network in general. That is, it depends.
Faster? It also depends. The two phones I use at the moment are T-Mobile's G1 (Based on HSPA 7.2mb technology), and a Sprint HTC Mogul (same as the XV6800 on VZW), which operates on Sprint's EV-DO Rev. A network.
I've found the Mogul to be a bit faster, but I think that has more to do with the way T-Mobile deployed their 3G network than the superiority of CDMA. My G-1 always topped out at almost 1mb down exactly, it maxed out so close to 1mb so many times that I finally decided T-Mobile is not allowing maximum throughput. That is I think they capped the speed to about 1mb down. On more mature European networks based on the same technology, EV-DO Rev. A is blown out of the water.
Your statement that VZW (CDMA is what u actually said) is cheaper is just wrong. They are tied with AT&T for the highest prices at best, and I think are actually the most expensive. Do I think T-Mobile has the best phones? No. Do I think they're better than VZW? Hell yes! Verizon sells phones that all look different but have basically the same insides. If there is anything distinctive about a phone coming to them, chances are VZW is gonna cripple whatever that is.
It's OK (even good) to have opinions, but don't just spew complete nonsense to support those opinions.
my experience with Tmo's 3G is that is SCREWS. Used the others, they are all fasst really - cant complain much about any of them.
I guess you guys are right.
Verizon should be training their sales people to sell based on how great their competitor's products are.
No, the right way to go would be to make their own products better. It's frustrating to see all the good CDMA phones from across the Pacific and not be able to buy them as-is (the Chocolate, for instance- also see the Casio Gz'one).
THE G1 DOES SUCK BECAUSE OF T-MOBILE
App the thing to death! There are already apps out that combats the "missing stuff". We are haveing g1 iphone warz in my home, and I am winning, well at least financially. for every free app, my iphone roomie has to buy it! GO OPENSOURCE
You are aware that there are free apps for the iPhone, right? And if you know where to look, there are ways to make other apps free.
by the way, I do not have the g3 network installed whre i live at, as the speed on wifi or edge is very close and just as fast as the iphone network roomie has
Dude,. that makes no sense. EDGE is WAY slower than any of the 3G networks AND way slower than wi-fi! Saying you get just as fast with either one just makes it sound like you're making up shit to support your views.
Ok, lets see, when I did a side by side on the storm vs g1 the g1 was faster to load up webpages, the g1 also would go to the non mobile version of a website where the storm would not. There are so many things wrong with that list it's obvious that the person who wrote it has never seen a g1 other than online. I haven't purchased from amazon yet but still have mp3 files on my phone, so that's not a limit. The phone is so much more responsive than any touch screen device verizon has out right now. Looks like they are worried people will like it more than their phones.
I'm not going to bash any carrier, I've had them all and to each his/her own really. I have T-Mobile and the converage is great and the call quality is very good, I suspect the same as with all the other competitors. As for MJ's comments, I agree to a point in the lack luster phones, but they do offer the Blackberry curve and pearl and while the pearl isn't the easist to use for business the curve certainly is. They also have a few Windows mobile devices as well so I don't think your "adult world of PDA's" is valid.
This is smear campaign but who cares, they are a business and guess what? It works especially to the unknowledgeable person looking for a new phone.
The BB Storm looks good and I hope it works as well as it looks but I'm not willing to leave T-Mobile especially with their new 3G network, new phones on the horizon and their cheap plans. Verizon has and always will be way too expensive.
VZW can talk when they release the Touch Diamond and the Touch Pro, unmolested.
Until then, I'm not interested in the hypocrisy of VZW talking about how phones from its competition are crippled or limited.
First it was the iPhone, and now the G1.
Verizon sure knows that there's competition out there. And they still didn't release a phone that is worth switching to them yet.
I love their belligerent bashing of the Android OS itself. I mean, say what you want about the G1 hardware (it does have some quirks, with a pretty er, modest battery life), but Verizon is making a huge mistake by locking all of their stuff down and not embracing open-source ideology.
When did VZW EVER bash Andriod? VZW is actually going to be releasing Andriod phones next year.
y go that far? just say how ugly that phone is...
I have the G1, and I live in Seattle. The T-Mobile 3G connection is so much faster that I actually had an iPhone user comment on the speed of it yesterday while waiting in line at the ferry. In the corporate world, not a single person has Verizon. I'm sorry. I work in corporate office buildings all day. Every single phone I see is either on At&t or T-Mobile. So whoever made the comment about T-Mobile not having a line that caters to the "adult world of PDA users..." They have the same Blackberry phones as At&t, they have the Dash that runs Winmo, they have the Wing that runs Winmo, and they offer the Blackberry Kickstart, which is a new Blackberry flip phone licensed solely to T-mo. What does Verizon offer? Chocolate? Cool. A bunch of little highschoolers running around with the exact same, cheap, beat up, LG phone? Verizon offers no customization, and everyone I know on their network has to have their P.O.S. phone replaced at least once before their available upgrade. Bad move, Verizon, bad move. Not to mention they pointed out a bunch of problems that have already, or will be, fixed by Android applications.
This is probably the most blatant lie of a post on engadget mobile. VZW has HUGE corporate deals with THOUSANDS of companies all over the country. Wal-Mart, GM, Toyota, Target, GE, Home Depot, Northrop Grumman, BNSF, and the US Govt, are some of the massive ones to name a few as well as all the medium and small business they sign up every day.
And are you seriously as retarded as your post leads us to believe? VZW doesn't have The Curve or Pearl? VZW doesn't have powerful WiMo devices? You think the nicest phone they have is the Chocolate?
Please... leave and return to your fantasy land, and stay there.
To all you "my network is faster than T-Mobile...blah blah blah" folk... I'll put my G1 up against your anything in speed test.
"Verizon biggest problem is " that it's Verizon and will soon be headed toward the sunset.
Sure, come up to the High Desert in CA and I dare you to test your G1 against VZW's EV-DO Rev A while your g1 crawls along on EDGE. Or meet me in Northern Arizona, Central California, Nashville TN, or some of the other hundreds of glaring places where you will find EV-DO Rev A but NOT find a spec of T-Mobile's 3G coverage.
Was this stuff written by the McCain/Palin campaign. Spending too much time talking about possible negatives of someone else, rather than talking about the positives of what they are bringing to the plate. Guess you have to talk the talk of stupid people to get their vote. Go Verizon...
Doofas, your name fits..
Dude, I don't care WHAT your opinion is or what views you have, that's your business, BUT LEAVE POLITICS OUT OF IT!
This is just internal document to inform their employees about some facts of their competitors phones, yet you somehow come to the ignorant conclusion that this internal document also means that VZW doesn't sell their employees on the positives of their own phones and network? Are you fucking retarded? That's all VZW does is feed their employees the Big Red Kool-Aid you dumbass.
If they didn't have customers leaving to pick up a G1, they wouldn't bother doing this. And with Verizon going LiMo, why wouldn't they throw about as much smear as possible on Android. Me thinks we'll see an Android phone from Verizon soon enough. They aren't really bashing Android, but the hardware and T-Mo's 3G coverage.
VZW would be retarded not to do this. You don't think T-Mobile has internal documents listing the shortcomings of their competitors phones? Please get over yourself. Sure VZW had some folks leave for the G1, but every damn day T-Mobile has folks leave for VZW's superior phone selections and especially far superior 3G coverage.
In other news, Verizon announced their support for McCain.
Apparently they share a mutual interest, mud-slingin.
