Google patches up Android jailbreak with RC30 update

As you may have noticed, Google doesn't exactly seem to be hesitant about pushing out Android updates, and it looks like it's now at it again, letting the new RC30 update slip out just days after folks finally figured out what the mysterious RC29 update actually did. This particular update is decidedly less mysterious, however, with Google saying up front that it had been notified of the jailbreaking issue with Android and has developed a "fix," adding that it is "currently working with our partners to push the fix out and updating the open source code base to reflect these changes." No word on any other changes included in the update, but it's supposedly on an "accelerated release" and should be in everyone's hands within the next the three or four days.

I didn't understand in the first place... if Android is open and anyone can develop and release apps for it, why is there a need to jailbreak it?
They don't want people to use the g1 on other networks until they have stayed with t-mobile for 3 months. I think its a fair compromise considering at&t won't unlock iphones no matter how long you were a customer for.
Seems silly when you think effort could have been better spent on other things. I'm guessing this was TMo pushing on Goggle and not the Android really caring. Personally, I wish the federal government would make it illegal for phone hardware to be locked to any carrier, and thus force the carriers to innovate their service and pricing as forms of competition.
RC30 fixes a rather serious Android bug that sends all keyboard input to a background root console. This bug is what allowed the telnetd jailbreak, see http://android.jim.sh/index.php/ConsoleShell . The update has nothing to do with preventing unlocking (a different form of jailbreaking, which is incorrectly linked to from this article). And as it has been noted, anyone who has been with T-Mobile for three months can already receive an unlock code for their phone.
Jailbreak? So much for Open Source gimmick! How about Open Source search???
My uk G1 says TC5 RC7 112931, had it about a day so far, is the update for the uk version too?

upgraded to RC30 last night at 2am, and now my GPS does not work!
my faith in google's ability to test is being tested.
