AT&T Quickfire hits shelves a few days early
We hear that some truly lucky humans have gotten their hands on the AT&T Quickfire (also known as the Knick), which is supposed to go on sale November 10th, so that means... yup about two days early. The asking price for the device was $149.99 (with a $50 mail in rebate) with a new 2 year contract. As for details, all we know is that it was purchased in an AT&T store by an unnamed mystery customer in a "small town." Sometimes it truly pays to live in the real America.

I played with the Quickfire and it's pretty nice for a dumbphone. The web browser is a lot better than the standard browser.
This phone is booty. Its wack. Its a piece of shit. Do not buy this phone. I woke up early today and set out to buy this phone after reading some stores were selling it. I finally found one and paid the $300 thinking that I had gotten a good deal. I couldnt have been more wrong. The screen was barely reactive to touching. It won't run on the 3g network (it kept switching to the edge network even though I live in a 3g area). It is a horrible phone. With no track ball, it is extremely difficult to navigate through the stupid os menu screen. I write this rant/warning from my bf's g1 as we are on our way to return this cheap plastic mess.
Ok...two "reviews" and they seem to be completely opposed to each other - since my 12 year old is hot to trot on getting this as his next handset, it'd be nice to know for sure.
Local AT&T store and Radio Shacks do not currently have it yet...no telling if they'll have it Monday or not - and I'd rather have some clue before placing an order for it via the AT&T website.
Well, there are videos popping up on YouTube that seem to blunt your criticisms - such as the touchscreen being unresponsive and the menus being difficult to navigate.
Since you only joined engadget today, and this is your very first post, I'm wondering if you are simply a shill...
You do realize that anyone in the market for a G1 isn't going to be in the market for this phone - this is squarely aimed at the younger set.
I picked on of these up yesterday. The touch screen is pretty solid, though not perfect. Sometimes it's too sensitive and other times it's not sensitive enough. But it doesn't seem to be a hardware issue, so I have hope that it can be perfected. The menus aren't hard to get around and it's fairly intuitive. I didn't like the packed in browser, but Opera Mini runs just fine. Now, if Google decides to support this OS, I would be very happy.
@ badqat
I disagree about this being aimed only at the younger set. I had a blackberry curve before this, and while it was great, it wasn't worth the $40 in internet/TXT costs. I've got a better screen for browsing and a wider keyboard and I pay half as much for internet/TXT.
It certainly isn't that bad. Picked up one for my 12 year old today. And while it's not replacing my Bold anytime soon, it was much better than expected.
Touchscreen isn't iPhone perfect, but it's not bad.
Does it support googlemaps?
@ Hbishop
only the java version with no GPS support. hopefully, this phone will be popular enough for Google to support it.
My wife picked it up this weekend. Its a great phone for 99 bucks. Touch Screen is nothing like the iphone but it works well. If you are looking for a sidekick type phone, this phone is great. But if you're expecting a iphone/smartphone type phone. Spend the extra 100 bucks and get what you want.
does this cell phone have wi fi that u dont have to pay internet cost like the itouch/iphone? if not, how much will it cost to get internet on the phone?
im planning to get this phone because it seems fairly fine and fun to use. but, the size seems like it wont fit into pocket jeans XD
No it does not have wifi.
I have owned the phone for roughly two weeks and I've been pretty satisfied. Generally internet browsing is solid and 90% of the time do I enjoy using the touch screen. I ended up getting the phone for 0.00 with a 2 year agreement. MP3 sound great and camera quality is good for a cell phone.
By no means does it feel like a smart phone, and battery life is not the greatest. I generally charge it every night but I'm assuming that it will probably switch to every 2 days considering you tend to use something more when you first purchase it.
I would recommend this phone to anyone that messages a lot. Phone quality is great but this phone is clearly designed around what you can do with the qwerty keyboard before anything else.
