The better part of Nokia's smartphone roadmap goes on display

First, a word of caution: we're not certain what we're looking at here, but by all accounts, it appears to be a list of prototype devices available to groups within Nokia or third-party development partners. We've filled in as much as we could, adding notes where appropriate. In many (if not most) cases, these devices are available in a series of successive prototype builds that improve on elements of the hardware before they're blessed and released to manufacturing for retail; the availability dates you see here are of the most recent prototype build that we were able to find. Notable goodies include the "Corolla" with a 3-inch VGA display, the "Jig" landscape slider for AT&T, and the "Eitri," a monster QWERTY candybar with a 640x350 display and 5-megapixel camera, but there's a ton of good stuff here, so make a bowl of popcorn, curl up with your laptop, and take a few minutes to digest this thing in its entirety.
Lots of these projects are either ultimately canceled, rolled into future projects, or were always intended for internal development use, so we won't necessarily end up seeing everything that's listed here -- that being said, it's awesome to know that Nokia's planning to knock the spec sheets out of the park in 2009. go to hell nokia
your next touch phone will be in 2009 second half!!!!!!!!!!
by this time the market will be already crowded
Wow where did that come? Have Nokia punched you personally?
Btw why isn't this on main Engadget page. I mean this is rather big.
Is it me, or does it seem odd that the name "Nokia" and the word "Shite" have the same amount of chars?
coincidence?...
iThink not.
holy shit, apple has the same number of characters of shite, too!!!
learn to troll iEye
ip08 has touch.. it's the next touch release mr. (end of 08)
Is it me or does iEye and dick have the same number of letters? Along with a whole bunch of other fitting 4 letter words...
I wonder who's going to get fired for leaking this ... don't you guys know that Nokia prosecutes for corporate espionage?
Troll has the same number of letters as bitch.
How cool is this! There's some sirius stuff coming form them and top of that can't wait for S60 5th edition running on them rather than 4th edition.
Serious. Not Sirius (the satellite radio brand or the star of the Canis Major constellation).
Is it me, or O.S. versión 5.0 and 5.0.1 is next Maemo version?
Ok, it seems that I am wrong, and it is latest Symbian OS version...
It seems that some product codes are from firmware versions: http://homepage.mac.com/alvinmok/nokia/firmware.html
Nothing special here. After a whole 2 years of Nokia making rehashes of the N95, all that this indicates is that we'll be getting more memory, more megapixels and more screen pixels NEXT YEAR. It's not even a major bump up - seiously people, think about it before you get excited. You would have been waiting for THREE YEARS for Nokia to surpass the N95 properly *if* that Corolla comes out.
I'll bet they're still using those shitty 330mhz processors too. Don't Nokia realise that regardless of how they tweak the software, things will always run slowly with such a pathetic clock speed. The browser is the best example of this - try changing tracks with the media keys on your N96 while browsing the internet, it takes about 20 seconds just to register the button push.
Lol. Least you could have done is to change that name.
Well mpx count and things like that are the only things we see here so who knows what these phones will look like and how will they work.....
To me that IPO8 or Ivalo could be the next N95. I couldn't care less anymore how far the megapixel race goes and it haven't seemed to affect European and Asian buyers that much anymore either.
Like Eldar(mobile-review.com) said that Nokia will have some sirius phones coming out 2009 that will start the new era of Nokia's smartphones and show the goal for other players, and i got no doubt they will.
There's no reason to believe that Nokia will use the same processors, but i do get your point. It just would make sense that when there's clearly going to be new kind of phones with new S60 in it they will change the whole hardware like they have done in the past thought.
You do realize that "NEXT YEAR" is two months away?
well at least you can multitask on all Symbian S60 phones...
AND
with the next sw-update for the n96... such problems (like waiting 20 secs. yeah, right ;-)) will be history...
Would you like some cheese and an iPhone with your whine?
RM-422 is the 6124 Classic, so vassini is probably the 6120
If the Corolla has a xenon flash and OMAP3 hardware, it will be perfect.
Gwen Stefani? Celine Dion? Shakira? Someone at Nokia must be a huge pop fan.
On another note... I guess I wont be buying an N85 anymore considering a Xenon flash version is coming out next year.
An omission to note: my E71-2 is also part RM-346.
"Nokia's planning to knock the spec sheets out of the park".
Long spec sheets do not make a device good. Apple is proving it's all about the software. The longer Nokia struggles with Symbian, the wider the gap is going to get. Fortunately, Google is developing a nice OS for them so they should be able to play catch-up quickly once they realize it's time dump Symbian.
good point, except you're wrong
What the hell are you talking about. The gap right now is Nokia owning like 40% of the smartphone market while Apple isn't even close. If you mean that Apple is gaining marketshare, then the gap would be smaller, not the other way around. Also, good software alone doesn't make a great phone and the iPhone isn't such a great phone outside the software department.
Don't post wrong info if you don't know anything about it.
Fernando, I very much like the picture. this is my first non-PS3fanboy post, solely due to admiring your mustache.
Arivadercci!!!!!!!!!!
He may be talking about this.... http://www.engadget.com/2008/11/10/iphone-3g-overtakes-the-razr-as-best-selling-domestic-handset/
The iPhone is now officially the best selling phone in the USA. That's ... incredible. 2 years ago, it was un-imaginable. Nokia is selling huge volumes of low-end phones, and it's going to keep that market for a while - seems like nobody can match the price/performance of these things. However, in the high end phone market, Nokia must be seriously worried.
There's three things that currently holds Nokia back: Software. Software. And software. Their software _sucks_. Not just Symbian - their PC Suite software sucks too. It's so horrible, it's shocking. Coming from a huge company with unlimited resources, that's troubling. It means that somewhere at the top management level, they don't "get" software. They should have embraced Android right from the get-go, it's currently their best bet at a short time solution. I have seen Symbian - I am a software developer and given its history, I have very little faith that it can be rescued. Maybe if they get some genius wunderkind on board but... chances are exceedingly slim. Resources would be better spent at customizing the hell out of Android or developing a new OS from scratch.
Despite Nokia not being as popular as the iPhone, RIM Blackberries or the Android (OS), I still think that Nokia is one of the better handset manufacturers. They make some of the most interesting phones, and I support them. I remember seeing that one avant-garde stick phone and I was immediately obsessed with getting one. Unfortunately it lacks any features, but it sure did look futuristic and odd - and beautiful.
I look forward to what Nokia will come up with. Hopefully another fashionable, artsy avant-garde phone with a 3.0-3.8 inch screen, slide out keyboard and Android! OH god, that would be perfect. As perfect as what could have been with the Touch HD and Android. Ugh. Speaking of Touch HD, HTC is another good handset manufacturer in my book, but their stuff is more refined. Nokia is definitely more stylish. Unfortunately, for some reason, the US tends to not pick up any of those stylish phones. Those dull idiots at Nokia USA.
Nokia not as popular? Don't they sell far more phones worldwide than Apple? I'd also be mildy surprised if Android phones had sold as many as Nokia.
Agreed. I just wish HTC would take full advantage of the very hardware manufactures so well and stop doing stupid things like not including flash on a 5mpx camera phone and not taking full advantage of the video accelerated hardware they have built into certain handsets. Like building proper drivers maybe? Unless this of course is a fault of windows mobile. But I am not one to make that judgment.
Apple sold something like 10 million phones in one year? Nokia sells 10 million every week, so yeah, it's kinda popular. RIM is totally unrelevant outside North America. No need to talk about Android.
About the list... I believe it when I see some of the phones actually come out.
It sounds like he's specifically talking about Nokia USA, which in that case could be true.
As a business handset, there aren't a lot of choices from Nokia, esp in the US. And I don't think you can really say the Android OS is popular now...
There is no question that Nokia knows how to make hardware. Massive quantity, good quality, etc. Unrivaled.
But like I said above, in the smart phone market, they are missing software expertise. Their software is crap. No wonder, either, given that Nokia rose to the top in an era when hardware was the beginning and the end of a phone, when phones all ran custom OSs which couldn't do very much (but excelled at what they could do).
It all comes down to this: Nokia needs to learn software. How fast they can do it will directly determine their relevance in the years to come. Nokia is currently getting outdone by Apple, RIM, and even Win Mobile in the software department. And Android is on the passing lane too.
"Despite Nokia not being as popular as the iPhone, RIM Blackberries or the Android (OS), "
Not being as popular? Nokia sells about 50 times as many devices as Apple or RIM, and Android is hardly a blip on the screen. Nokia is the undisputed leader is smartphones as well.
what you mean not as popular, it is THE most popular hand set manufacturer in the world.
i like what i see. this is me content --> :)
This is me not content---> :(
This is basically the problem with nokia.. too many models, not enough cohesiveness. They are all fashion/feature phones. not a one that will carry you through multiple years of OS upgrades, applications, etc, with any real consistency. They will be forever playing catch up, I don't think they have the ability to get on top of this.
VGA display is still lame. I need WVGA or better.
Nokia is vying for 3rd place.
You make it seem like everyone is using WVGA. And most phone with WVGA sucks. Like WM phones. 360x640 is high enought.
Oh please. Customers couldn't care less about WVGA. VGA on 3-3.5inch screen is more than enough and companies like Samsung that did great last quarter was selling TS phones with QVGA screens. 5800's screens already with higher res screen than iphone got enough for pretty much all.
Worst gimmick ever
Nokia's OS == Palm OS
Windows Mobile / iPhone (Mac OS X) >>>>>> Nokia / Palm
Android = Infantile (Give it time, people!)
Seriously, Nokia's N95 has some *amazing* hardware, but the OS is FAR from my favorite. I work product support for a major tech companies cellular software and it amazes me that Nokia drags their hardware so far down with it's dumbphone operating system. Symbian isn't much better than other inhouse operating systems from Sanyo and Motorola.
..and what is your favorite mobile phone OS?
Nokia's OS = Palm OS!?!?!?
-_-" That's so wrong...
We already have a "Corolla". It's red and sits in our driveway...
thanks for sharing.
Come on Nokia, you've got the 800*480 screen in the N800, which is what we need for websites that are mainly still written for 800*600.
You've got Maemo under your belt for Mobile Linux, with Flash9 and Web2.0 touchscreen goodness.
Your smartphones are consistently too fat to fit comfortably in a pocket.
Symbian is a dog, sell your stake to LG.
I hope a Nokia big cheese reads this and takes heed so I can go back to owning Nokia product, cos my W910i is also a dog.
Well nokia phone's sync with everything,it do vard's right which is simple standard
but other companies seem to fuck that simple feature
even the i phone,RIM can receive a simple fucking v card transmission via sms or blue tooth
tell me how are your communication cause I yet to see this handle right it's been 8yr's
and this feateur is 17yr communication standard
My guess is Shakira is getting her own little pink candybar phone with WiFi, maybe it'll be marketed to Latin America
