You're right, out of the 7+ Nokia's that's I've owned over the past 9 years, none of them ever had that "solid" feel, but they sure did hold up to the punishment / wear and tear I put them through. I now have the E71 - it's the most solid device I have ever owned... :)
My personal observations: I had a chance to use E71 for a few days. It seems to be very solid and a good piece of work. Currently I have a N95 8GB and it's been great! It has dropped a few times, but no scratches, doesn't creak in any way...

I'm an SE and BB fan but consider the E71 to be the most solid device that I've ever owned.
