Apple, Walmart to do $99 4GB iPhone?
Look, we know you've been holding out for the iPhone to hit Walmart before you pick it up, sandwiched between the fishing gear and row upon row of exercise videos -- and we don't blame you. You'll ride your shopping cart down the wide aisles like a chariot, and when you get home with the phone you'll dial up all your friends and let them know how much cheaper your iPhone was than theirs. What was that? Yeah, the new word on the street is that Walmart is getting a 4GB iPhone 3G for a mere $99, according to Boy Genius Report, and while BGR was previously reporting a November 15th launch date at Walmart, and can't vouch for the accuracy of this new report, Walmart training materials (pictured above) have been seen in the wild, so there's a grain of truth to this madness somewhere. Plus, a $99 iPhone just sounds so Walmart-ey, doesn't it?

November of next year??? until they get MMS I will pass. I had a 1st gen touch that was so buggy, maybe the iphone would be better to me.
I'm assiming its a typo meaning December 15.
Hehe
That's just great. Actually it will ad a little variety to the scenery at Walmart. Picture this: outside the store you'll see a long line of people waiting to get an iPhone. Inside the store you'll see the, more established, long line of people waiting to return stuff.
Genius. Just when the market starts getting saturated with iPhones, Apple dumps a low cost low memory model on the shelves at Walmart, to attract lower income buyers that otherwise wouldn't buy one. Those same buyers are less likely to realize just how much more per month the data plan is going to cost them. So they get the cheap ass smartphone on an impulse buy, and AT&T hooks them for two years on a minimum $80 per month rate plan.
"Genius. Just when the market starts getting saturated with iPhones, Apple dumps a low cost low memory model on the shelves at Walmart, to attract lower income buyers that otherwise wouldn't buy one."
Either you are perpetuating the smug, elitist apple stereotype with those statements. Or you are concerned with people not being able to pay the 80/mo to have this pretty, but non-functional phone.
it has nothing to do with low income buyers - the monthly plan is still ridiculously outrages for anyone making 6 figures to afford.
BAW AHW HAW!
So much for being the cool guy with an iPhone.
HA really? The "cool guy with an iPhone." Really?
@ Adam
I was being sarcastic. I was enjoying the satisfaction I would get imagining all the "I have an iPhone therfore I'm cooler than you" losers who will now be joined by all the kiddie and low end customers who buy the iPhone from Wal-Mart.
I don't own an iPhone, I'm on Verizon.
Touché
My faith in humanity is a little restored...
Why would owning anything make you cool? What, are you 7 or something?
Hmmmmmm..... I've found the iPhone intriguing, but haven't wanted to pony up for it. I'm up for renewal, and would actually pay less for a phone/data plan with the iPhone plan. I don't use my phone for music, have an 80gb classic with every song I own on it, and room for another 20gb. But this might get me to pony up the $99. Tho' I must say the N97 is looking good too......
Great more iPhone lines!
What exactly does one do with 4GB of non-replaceable memory?
Oh yeah - nothing.
$97 iPhone sounds more Wal-marty...
I heard from a really reliable source that the launch date is December 28th, and att is asking for a lot of changes in the way the walmart connection center works.
A reasonable monthly plan would be better.
I think I would rather spend my money on a phone that I can change the battery in when it dies. And, are they really charging people $100 bucks for 4 extra gigs of RAM? Bwahahaha...fools.
4GB extra in space, not RAM genius... On the contrary, 8GB of RAM on a phone would be revolutionary... and wildly useless.
Hopefully people will realize that if they have any questions about it, WM employees can't answer them. I know in my BBY, we do more ATT cell sales than all the WMs surrounding us. Most still go to ATT for phones, the smart ones come to BBY for lower prices on the same phones. I guess the poor hicks will go to WM, and then wonder why they can't remove this $30 data plan.
If I have a question about the phone, I'll stop at an ATT store. Maybe your Best Buy is different, but the ones around here are SOOOOOOOO bad that I won't set foot in them even to buy a DVD let alone anything that might require an educated answer. I really can't see any diff between Wally-World and Best Buy when it comes to customer service.
guess more will be trampled ?
PLEASE!!! STOP THIS MADNESS!!! MY MOUTH AND JAW ARE BECOMING SORE FROM GIVING ALL THE APPLE FANBOYS AND COMPANY EXEC'S BLOW JOBS TO KEEP APPLE ON TOP!!! I'VE REACHED MY LIMIT!!! PLEASE, NO MORE, I CAN'T PLEASE ALL OF YOU, OR 6 BILLION PEOPLE FOR THAT MATTER!!
i will love if this iphone 4gig can be unlocked for any gsm!!!!!!!!!
I wonder if AT&T will expand their service around Walmart stores. For some reason, I don't get service in some parts of my local walmart. Gotta have full bars where you're selling iPhones, right?
Any service at walmart would be appreciated.
@ Joe K... $97.56 sounds even more walmart-ey
