Smartphone numbers are in: iPhone sales exceed Windows Mobile sales for first time
Gartner's latest and greatest analysis of the global smartphone industry is in, and there are quite a few interesting nuggets tucked within all those percentages. For starters, the sector still managed to grow 11.5% in Q3 2008 compared to a year prior, but that increase is the smallest since it began tracking. Of course, given the current economic climate, we'd say it's a win to see any number not in the negative. Moving on, we see Nokia maintaining its numero uno status with 42.4% market share, though it did recognize a rare decline in sales of 3% year-on-year; as for RIM, its BlackBerry phone sales increased an amazing 81.7% in Q3. We're also clued in to why Apple was rumored to be hacking its iPhone production some 40% in Q4, as the company has some two million units of inventory built up in the supply channel. Finally, we're told that "for the first time (meaning in this quarter), iPhone sales exceeded sales of Microsoft Windows Mobile devices worldwide and in North America," and beyond that, "open-source initiatives like Android and Symbian Foundation [are set to] challenge Windows Mobile's licensing model in the short-term." Need we really reiterate how badly WinMo 7 is needed?

Wait a sec, I thought they were saying that the iPhone was NOT a smartphone?
Just an overrated piece of garbage that would look better on my kitchen floor...
How sad is it that you have 5-6+ years to build up market share and completely screw it up by trying to pull the same crap as you pull with your desktop OS? Doesn't work so well when you don't have 95% market share huh?
So when the whole market grew 11.5%, did Nokia have a 3% drop in market share, or in actual sales?
If i remember correctly didn't Ballmer laugh at the iPhone at launch and said he was not worried. I wonder if he has seen the the sales numbers yet.
PS im not a Apple Fanboy i actually use the HTC Touch Pro.
just my 2 cents.
That's why Ballmer gets more eggs than any CEO. Enjoy this http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mtBQ4UCXQeo
Aside from Stevie B, Windows Mobile is non-existant as a brand - and that is the issue. Period.
Show someone who doesn't read this sight two phones: the Jesus Phone (iPhone) and any WinMob device you happen to have with you. Ask them whet they know about each.
That's it! WinMob is not a brand recognized by the non-geeks who buy and use Jesus phones - like my 81 year old dad and 79 year old mom.
Regarding the post title; Are we confusing America with an entire planet again?
From the linked article: "For the first time, iPhone sales exceeded sales of Microsoft Windows Mobile devices worldwide and in North America."
Windows Mobile is dead and this report confirms it. And Vista Pro (aka Win 7) will follow unless Ballmer gets replaced.
And Tmobile had 1Millon G1 Pre-orders at one time too......
Maybe iphone outsold WinMo phones for the week. But last I checked WinMo phones were far more available world wide than the iPhone... I'll wait 2 days for the retraction... for now we can label this a bullsh!t
Sure, winmo phones are widely available on the store shelfs because the demand is decreasing. That's the point!
It appears winmo fanboys are taking the report very hard! :)
lol I don't think even Steve Ballmer likes WinMo.... Until HTC invented Manila with its TouchFlo.. I would have ebay'd my winmo phone long ago. It keeps me idle until sprint gets A) An android phone, B) xda-devs gets a perfect copy of andriod running on this phone, or C) Sprint gets the iPhone.
I've used the iphone.. ive tried getting my winmo to look and act like the iphone... but it just aint happening. So save the usual fanboy crap.
But facts are in numbers. And there is no way a limited supplier like iphone would ever beat worldly available WinMo phones for a whole quarter.. unless all those shoppers bought symbian phones. Especially not likely in "North America" where 5 other carriers that offer WinMo and java phones compared to one that offers iphone.. no way they out sold here. Just sayin.
