Walmart iPhone probably happening, probably not for $99

We've been hearing rumors of an iPhone at Walmart for a while now, and the only thing that was even mildly interesting about the unlikely pairing was that there was supposedly going to be a $99 4GB model. Well, now we hear that they'll indeed be selling the phone, but (as the ad above would seem to indicate) it's going to be a $197 8GB model -- about 2 bucks cheaper than you can get them for at an Apple or AT&T store, with no mention of a 4GB version at all. So, you're telling us we're going to be able to get this phone for (almost) exactly the same price as before, but now we can buy it at a store where we can also pick up Slim-Fast in bulk and possibly die in a retail trampling? We'll pass.

I'd love to be able to read the fine print on that poster. Perhaps everyone can get it for $200, even if you just blew your 'upgrade' a month earlier on some crap phone.
As it is, there are some irritating rules in place that can make that $200 model a lot more expensive.
What Rules Stupid if you use your upgrade you pay 399.99 for the 8 gb and 499.99 for the 16gb. And walmart is the devil
@notafanboy
why is walmart the devil? they have the cheapest prices that almost everyone can afford (well not the iphone), and how is that evil?. are you against large corporations that make life easier, cheaper and better for the average joe? You sound like an elitist.
There's just something very depressing about buying an iPhone at Wal-Mart. Wait, there's something depressing about being in Wal-Mart period. Le sigh. I can't believe the $2 savings would prompt anyone to go rush to Wal-Mart to get this. Well, maybe I can.
That's lame--$2 saved?? If I were to buy the iPhone, I would at least get it at the Apple Store--I'll pay the extra money that could have been spent on two double cheeseburgers for the allure of the retail store.
Please! I NEED MORE MEMORY! 32, 64, 128 Gigs Pul-leeze!
Hating wal-mart is so cliche. Move on, people.
Doesn't Apple just not understand,,, how does actually release an IPhone more cheaper and sadly unnecessary , with less storage, Apple doesn’t not understand that his devices are so expensive for bad components, common one open eyes, there are so much better phones that IPhone, like Nokia 5800, that are more cheaper and without contract, and much more better that just can kill IPhone, here is a good link to understand that.

are you 3 years old or something? it actually hurt my brain to read that.
jajajajjajajajjajajaj
Very funny because here in Engadget, are just lover off all Apple Brand, that’s what I just confirm, it’s like a religion, and if someone talks bad o say Something offensive to it, uffff it just be like to be Judas.
Poor men
This really pisses me off. As a retailer for At&t, we apparently aren't allowed to carry it according to Apple. I think its funny that Steve Jobs doesnt trust retailers but will put his full faith in hoping someone with a 4th grade education at the desk at wal mart is smart enough to activate an iphone. Don't get me started on how many wal mart customers i get with problems.
Since its release, my store's numbers have been in the fucking toilet because that's all everyone wants. And i blame the American consumer too for being so stupid, (Nothing against iphone people), just the pompus idiots who come in my store demanding the fucking thing. Not asking for it, demanding it. You'd think the phone is the second coming of christ or something. Don't get me wrong, I think the iphone is a wonderful device that has paved the way for a new generation of phones and development of new applications (Shazzam is awesome).
In this day and age, it just annoys me that people think they're entitled to everything for free for some god damned reason. News flash motherfuckers, things cost money.
The iPhone is free? Please give more details.
Maybe the retail business is not for you... I always try to get the cheapest prices. Why spend more?
hahahaa newsflash m-effers... sounds like a bruce willis quoteeeeeee
I wasn't referring to the iphone being free. I'm talking about how everyone expects phones like blackberries, wm smartphones, etc to be free.
Funny you mention that because I actually had a customer get mad at me when I told them the iphone wasnt free and they actually had to pay for it. They got even more pissed with me when i told them about the $30 dolars a month extra for the iphone.
People in other countries have no problem shelling $500-600 for a phone because they haven't been spoiled by the word "free".
Gone are the days of every low end phone is free because the low ends are being replaced by high ends. Phones do more than they ever did and because of that, the price goes up. Its called economics.
Let me begin by saying that i am one of those Walmart associates who just happens to work in the Connection Center since they have started having Connection Centers. To the individual with so much Walmart hatred above, I can also assure you that i have more than a 4th grade education and i do not work there for the money. I do it because it allows me to keep my hobby (electronics &technology) up to date and it also gives me something else to do for 4 hours. i have served my country for over 18 years and currently in State Government employ. Everyone working in their stores does not scrape the bottom of the barrel. However, written correspondence indicating such says more about the writer than the reader. I think most of you should be concentrating on the overwhelming activation process rather than the price of the phone to begin with. In addition, most consumers that get their phones at walmart, get them there because they are not being raped through their wallets over the pricing or the myriad of requirements AT&T stores have on their pricing tags up to and including the fact that there are no mail-in rebates in a connection center. Know the story, then complain. Otherwise, silence is really and truly golden!
Most WalMart employees I've talked too think the company is rather slimy. I've heard stories of asking employees to do something outside of their job description, really poor shift flexibility and most of all the anti-union intimidation. There's the anti-union videos they show, no talking about unions while on the job, no talking about unions while on your break, no talking about unions on WalMart property. Try to unionize your co-workers outside of work, and don't be surprised if the WalMart store you work for mysteriously gets shut down.
The only people I've talked to who defended WalMart were either a higher up in the store or someone working to become a higher up. Of course, I've also talked to some WalMart employees who eventually left because instead of hiring from the store they just transferred their buddies in and assigned them to the higher positions.
But the Business Journals says it is true...
