There's something just a little
skeezy about basing predictions for Important New Apple Products upon nasty renders of protective case mockups from China. Still, they've
panned out astonishingly nicely before, so we'll just have to suck it up. iDealsChina is reporting that XSKN is not-so-secretly working on a silicone skin for the upcoming "Nano iPhone" (or, more likely,
iPhone nano) a shorter, chubbier version of the iPhone 3G. According to iDealsChina sources, the phone will apparently sport EDGE data, but otherwise seems unsurprisingly identical in specs to its forebears, other than the obviously smaller screen. They're also saying Apple plans to sell these at high volumes for low prices at hip spots like Walmart, that the company will (naturally) be unveiling the new handset in January at Macworld, and even go so far as to say that leaked photos of the device should be surfacing in the next couple of days -- we'll be keeping our eyes peeled. Check out another couple of tantalizing case renders after the break.

Much of the allure of the iPhone was it's big beautiful screen. I wonder how this will do.
How bout instead of making a chubby iPhone give us Flash and copy paste.
No Doubt
I'm out of contract right now, but waiting to see what the followup(s) to the iPhone 3g are. I was waiting on Android, but was disappointed with the gaps in its functionality and then crushed by the lack of a TouchHD for the US market, so we'll have to see what comes from Cupertino this time around. If its just an iPhone nano color me unimpressed. A 32gb iPhone 3G with a better battery might pique my interest.
I have to say that using Arnold and DAnny from the movie "Twins" was very clever.
It's not the price of the phone that bothers me about the current iPhone, it's the plan. Chop the plan for this one by $10 or $15 to account for the lack of 3G and I'm sold.
A smaller, cheaper iPhone lacking 3G sounds like a prime candidate for Walmart to me...
Well that matches up quite nicely with a lot of other things we've been hearing. People were wondering about the $99 rumors for wal-mart, maybe this is how they were getting there.
the only way this would be believable is if they maintain the same resolution for a smaller screen
otherwise the app store is going to be one hot mess...
good point... it would have to be same res, which would probably make this phone more expensive and not less than the current model. It would be nice if it was the same thickness as current, I would get one...
You can already see this issue in some apps if you are in a call while loading it. Since the "Tap to return to call" thing doubles the size of the top bar. I would have thought Apple would have included some kind of "resolution dependence" thing in the SDK. I can't imagine much stuff at the same resolution on a smaller screen, my father already has trouble reading some things. Although, he can read things much better than on his old RAZR.
A 'retail rule' used for planning inventory is that if you must stock two variations of a product, carry one basic and one loaded model.
I understand Apple going for the 'Walmart' crowd with a cheaper model, but please, Apple, go upscale too! Let's see some upgrades for the business class!
32Gig iPhone, pul-eeze!
Smaller is better. As cell phone goes, anyways.
I can barely type on my 3g iphone, how the hell will I be able to type on that little ass screen??? Who cares, I'm getting one.
I will get it if it has the app store, you tube playback, and a camera.
No keyboard and smaller screen.
I don't get it
Is this where i make a bad joke about waiting for the iPhone Shuffle? How life is more fun when calls are random? i coulda sworn this is where i do that.
