The T-Mobile G1, how would you tweak it?
The T-Mobile G1 is the topic of today's 'How Would You Change' discussion over at Engadget Classic, and given the obvious relevance to the Mobile crowd, we figured it prudent to pass along the link for your perusal. Head on over and drop some knowledge!

I would've made the screen sliding mechanism tighter and had two or three rails instead of 1. It's still really solid as it is, but there's some less-than-comforting movement of the screen when it's closed.
The things to ask for are pretty obvious. It could be thinner. It should have Stereo Bluetooth. an on screen keyboard (at least in portrait mode, but probably in landscape also). I do not understand how come nobody had made a podcasting app that remembers where you left the podcast, if I were a programmer that's what I would do. It's the only reason I still have an iPod.
its should be on sprint not tmobile
of course save apps to micro san disk is number one number two turn to turn gps number three better email for pop for comcast mail number 4 better vibration system for text emails thank you

although, im hoping these changes come to my precious G1. plz google plz.
make it not ugly
VIDEO CAMERA!!!! 'nuff said...
Simply put? Better design. It's flat out plain and ugly
I'm going to do a video review soon, but here are the major aspects of the phone (or at least what I consider major) that I think need to be improved (some of these fall under software, but I'm including them anyway):
1. Needs a virtual keyboard.
2. ALL buttons (keyboard and external buttons) need to be raised (they're too flush).
3. Camera needs improvement (is currently slow, and picture quality is crappy).
4. Video recording please!
5. Prefer a 3.5mm jack, AS WELL AS the mini USB charging port.
6. The whole OS needs to run "smoother" and "snappier". There's a slight lag when pressing icons, and a slight stuttering when scrolling that I wish wasn't there. Of course, maybe I wouldn't have included this gripe if I didn't have the iPhone as a reference, but alas, I do.
1. Agree. It would be more convenient, especially during quick web browsing.
2. Disagree. The home buttons could be slightly higher but the keypad is fine.
3. Indifferent
4. Indifferent
5. Definite agreement. The included headphones suck and the adapter is 2 feet long. Add some decent headphones and the cable is huge.
6. Like you said, its an unfair gripe. Android has the ability to run apps parallel, iPhone unloads each (with exceptions) so there are trade-offs.There's an app for Android called Power Manager that runs in the background to turn off preset functions depending on idle time and battery power. Extremely useful but something the iPhone probably couldn't do.
+7. Battery life is HORRIBLE.
Just look at other HTC products (Diamond, Touch Pro) etc. that have good hardware but so-so software (WinMo).
How about adding NFC (Near Field Communication)?
-Needs to be thinner
-Different widgets and widget options/choices make it more personalized.
-Faster snap shot time for the camera.
-Auto Tilt
-Need use for the accelerometer instead of just the street view
Save address/directions when in street view and when out of street view
-Text to map, meaning someone texts you a address and you can click it and it gives you directions
-Tighten the screen transition from port to land
-Automatic mount for USB
Better keyboard backlight and landscape mode without opening the keyboard, for starters.
Hardware fixes:
- Better camera. Needs stabilizer and higher quality. Resolution is fine.
- Raised keyboard buttons. Just a little too flat to feel good.
- Higher resolution
- Proximity sensor
- 3.5m headphone jack
- Too old looking (this actually looks good: http://www.talkandroid.com/android-forums/android-hardware/341-t-mobile-g2-phone.html)
- Video out
- Hardware lock key
- Video processor (good for high res movies and fancy eye candy)
- OLED Screen (maybe?)
- Better battery
Software fixes:
- Auto-rotate
- More bluetooth profiles
- On-screen keyboard
- Video recording
Now that I think about it... pretty much make it an N97 w/ Android.
I think most of the things previously mentioned are nice to haves....
but the number one issue that is killing this phone at the moment is the crappy BATTERY LIFE!
Im not able to give up my other phone yet, because the chances of the G1 lasting the whole day are close to zero....
I seriously think that when Sony and Samsung come out with better their android phones that have a battery life that lasts more than a day, people will be dropping G1s like a stone....
Sound to me like non of you have owned an HTC device before.
1. A super battery and custom case for it
2. sturdier build ( creaky loose feel)
3. better app manager (apps running in the background)
I think the battery could have a longer life (though switching to 2g saves a lot of the life on it - power management applications can solve the battery issue to an extent)
A stereo jack socket would have been handy, but not essential. The design is really nice, definitely not ugly. Some people just want bling bling and no content... Keyboard is pretty much perfect, as is scroll wheel. Camera needs revamping.
Exchange synching needs sorting out, as does tethering to laptops and pcs.
