RIM's president calls BlackBerry Storm a small netbook
Clearly, Mike Lazaridis has the chops when it comes to running a business. What he clearly lacks, however, is a firm definition of the term "netbook." To his credit, we still feel the exact boundaries for netbooks have yet to be determined (fret not, Psion Teklogix is hammering out those details), but calling a BlackBerry Storm one is -- how do you say? -- a bit of a stretch. During a recent sit down with RIM's president, CNET Asia heard the bigwig answer like so when questioned about viewing netbooks as competitors: "No, I think I can put netbooks in here [referring to the BlackBerry Storm]. These are netbooks. They are just smaller." Wait, Mike -- don't you think smartphones are more like MIDs or UMPCs? Or do we just have you all wrong here?

Proof positive that Steve Jobs is still alive!!!
Ohh Please, and you had to make this all about the Iphone... ENOUGH!
People are in denial but what he said is true.
"RIM's president calls BlackBerry Storm a small netbook."
Bahahahaha... no comments!
Blackberry Storm a mini netbook huh? That's a pretty dumb comment. I say dumb because according to his logic my desktop is just a really big netbook. Hopefully those other crazies will sue RIM for profiting off the term netbook and Mr. Lazaridis will change his tune.
He said "put netbooks in here"? Maybe he just doesn't know what the word "netbook" means. It sounds like he thought the reporter was referring to the Amazon Kindle (which, you know, downloads books from the net). You can put "net books" (books from the net) on a Storm. Maybe that's what he meant.
I think you're right on. It's exactly what I thought when I read it.
But how sad would that be if the president of RIM didn't know his tech?
language barrier?
go, canucks.
;)
Yay, Noe Psion can sue RIM

Does this match a netbook
Correction. Now instead of Noe
What about "Palmtop"? I remember years ago that was going to be the next big thing. We had Desktops, Laptops and right around the corner was going to be Palmtops. I think Palmtops became UMPC....but I still prefer the word Palmtop.
Its really a piece of crap with that click-screen BS. And the service blows. Verizon with their commercials claiming you can not be afraid of dead-zones? HA! What a load of crap. When my contract is up in January, I am doing something I never thought I'd ever say I'd do - getting an iPhone. It works where I live and Verizon doesnt. Verizon's customer service drones will try to keep you going on and on and on - paying for something that will never work. There is NO group of "network engineers" to be seen anywhere around me - and we live in a supposed "verizon" city. HAHA! Yea. And I have fertile land for you in Antarctica.
I thought it was illegal to sell books if they were missing a cover?
In a related story, RIM's president refers to his penis as the Hammer of Thor.
Recent independent poll showed the blackberry storm had one of the highest customer unsatisfaction rate.,.not only that but also highest blackberry 30 day return rate..so u bb fanbois stop tooting your own horn.,there is a reason y verizon hasn't releaed official numbers on storm sales in first month,.call it what u want software, firmaware troble etc they need to go back to drawing board on this one.it tanked here in the USA ,.not only that but statistics show that since storms release iPhone still managed to outsell storm .,.exactly imagine that .it hurts huh.accept the facts.come back n blog when storm sells 1 million in it's first weekend of launch,.
ITT: iPhone fanbois.
u know what's sad, pathetic, weak, horrible decision making, storm owners carry an iPod in the other front pocket,.what losers ,a bunch of dee dee dees., music player on that blows hard!browser on storm blows hard!u know u do .another reason storm tanking in USA.just think about that ,netbook my a$$, this phone can't even replace an iPod,just think about that,,,,,truth hurts huh.
Apparently grammar and correct spelling hurts too, because that's absolutely dreadful. I mean I'm writing this on my storm without a hiccup.
Also, you want to know why people carry more than one device? The Storm is a phone, you want to drain the battery listening to the music or watching movies/ tv shows that can be put on an ipod and not have battery left to text, surf, and call? Be my guest. I'll stick with dual devices till they figure out the longer lasting battery. I see countless IPhone owners doing the exact same thing you were just attacking Storm owners over.
He just posts comments like that repeatedly, just check for yourself lol
Funny my friend just got done saying a little bit ago that his iPhone battery life sucks. He goes maybe 1/2 the day before it's almost dead. I guess he's just a dee dee dee...or something like that....
I'm sure he didn't mean that literally. That'd be pretty sad for a guy like him to really believe that. Now I'm imagining what a RIM Netbook would be like.
hmmm.........
x86 compatible or it didn't happen.
It cant be a netbook without WIFI!
A "netbook" without wifi? Try harder RIM. Yes, we know Verizon forced you to kill wifi but still.
On the other hand, most Blackberries (unlike the iPhone) support full Bluetooth and you can use foldable keyboards with them. This is the setup I use when I don't want to carry a laptop.
umm does any netbook out there not ship with wifi? oh, i guess this does
Interesting. FYI, the original Psion netbook was running off an Intel SA1100 ARM-based processor. It didn't come with build-in WiFi. The RIM device uses an ARM11 core processor. Performance and feature-wise the RIM Storm could easily outperform the original Psion netbook... The Psion netbook has been discontinued for a few years though.
In a designer point of view, it is relatively challenging to shrink the physical size of a device while meeting all radio approval requirements. But it shouldn't be too difficult for RIM to actually convert the existing design into a form factor similar to the Psion netbook should RIM chooses to do so.
Newer ARM-based processors such as TI OMAP35xx are also quite powerful (up to 600MHz for now) and would be a good choice for next wave of tiny and power efficient netbook devices (running linux, WinCE..etc).
"a small netbook" ....doesn't a netbook also have to have wifi?
I think he was confused and commented on what would have been an ideal name for the device....other than "just" a smartphone.
See what happens when you smoke too many banana peels people? Everything looks much better than what it appears.
As nice as the Blackberry Storm looks, it is not a netbook! Or a computer! When I can do my word processing, spreadsheets, presentations and snych everything into my netbook (or computer), give me a call!
Ok, you can't call it a "netbook" or a computer till you can at least have a USB port (for peripheral use). so unless you can all of a sudden plug a jump drive into the storm, its not a netbook.
Typing this on a netbook, I really must say that this is bunk. When I see the storm run XP with a fully functional version of solidworks, I'll call it a netbook.
