What's the deal with Cupcake on the G1?
We pretty much know Cupcake's coming to the G1 at some point, but when? Hard to say -- we won't know for sure until the first batch of lucky sons of guns gets that OTA update message -- but Google And Blog claims that the next window for an update to go down will be at the end of January after a mid-January release was apparently missed (gee, that never happens). The first release to incorporate Cupcake features will apparently be RC31, and, if it's any consolation, it's said that strong positive reaction to Cupcake's features has caused T-Mobile has doubled its efforts to get this stuff out of the door. So yeah -- we wish we could report that we've heard stories of RC31 in the wild, but hey, at least they're still trying to get us this jazz before the month's out.

Bring it on!!! - D
From what I heard it will be coming out at the end of the month.
If Tmobile is just the carrier, I guess its Google that would be the ones under pressure to do an update. Hope Google makes the OS open source soon. Google closed Widgets and VideoCamera to developers, and who knows what...
So much for OPEN source...
On another note, Google just let go of 100 employees in January 2009,
and 10,000 Google employees got the pink slips in November 2008.
Android OS is open source and they don't charge for it on mobiles. So how is Google going to make money to pay for the developers to update the G1?
How can Tmobile put pressure on Google, if Google isn't making money?
I'd love to see that contract... Somebody fill me in....
You must be very confused. Google makes the Android OS, and it is open sourced (you contradicted yourself about that, wtf?) but regular G1s don't have the ability to be flashed. The developer versions have that ability so if you buy a developer version you can flash it with whatever you want. For a standard T-Mobile G1, you have to wait for them to send an update over the air, because T-Mobile controls the network and not Google.
Google makes Android = more people use their Search, Maps, Gmail Youtube, etc. products = more advertising revenue. That's all there is to it. The funds behind almost every one of Google's products is driven by advertising revenue.
the more and more i see it, the uglier that phone gets. ugh.
Kind of like the iSoap. Oh sorry that´s the iPhone....
Did you say iSoap because it's so slippery? Because it is. Especially the 2G model. The slipperiest phone I"ve ever used. I really hated that. I got a good hard rubberized case though but it adds size.

Android is Open Source. Why can't you access the Widgets? Because while the OS is Open Source, the API framework for widgets is still under development. When that is out, we will be able to make our own widgets. Same thing with Video Recording. The API is not out yet. It was well known that the API's would be released over time, as a lot of them were simply not ready to be put out yet. This goes for Bluetooth as well iirc.
Hope that helps.
Oops my bad... Let me get this straight...
Android is open-source, but a developer doesn't currently have access to develop; VideoCamera app, Bluetooth File Transfer, Widgets, and some other apps for Android...
Sounds kinda like going to an all-you-can-eat buffet, then being told you can only eat 50% of the items offered... thanks for coming... enjoy your food... :o)
Do you have to update your phone on the computer?!
