Palm investor McNamee details Pre's neat location-based features
As much as we've heard about (and played with) the Pre this month, there's still a whole lot yet to be revealed about webOS; Palm clearly has a little bit of work left to finish and polish the platform, so what we know so far has much more to do with UI glitz, glamor, and flashiness than the actual trench warfare of using a phone day in and day out. Yahoo's Tech Ticker had a chance to chat with Elevation Partners' Roger McNamee -- a figure whose cash infusion has been central to Palm's survival this past year or so as they've raced to throw together the Pre -- and in between Houdini-esque reveals of seemingly hundreds of smartphones on his person, he's slipped a couple cool location-oriented features we can expect in webOS. First up, the phone can be configured to check out your calendar every morning and automatically download all sorts of information about the people, places, and companies you're going to visit, including maps -- an especially awesome feature if you're dealing with spotty 3G coverage. Even cooler, though, has to be the lateness notifier -- the phone uses GPS to determine where you are, compares it to where you're supposed to be at the moment, and if it figures out that you're screwed, it'll let you know. What's more, it can automatically email people to let them know that you've screwed up (just blame it on the traffic -- we always do). Follow the break for Tech Ticker's full interview.

Wow, this is some serious innovation in a whole other direction compared to what's happening on Apple's front and stuff like iFart.
Or 'stuff' like Pocket Informant for iPhone?

This guy mentioned this on announcement day the vid was on you tube.he was being interviewed by fox news financial or something.
please get a haircut. This is not the '60s.
and how are we supposed to take you seriously when you can't even look semi professional?
I don't know about you, but I couldn't stop listening to this guy for some reason. It's like he has an infectious personality. He's just wacky enough to sound like he knows what he's talking about.
Well, if you have the money this guy has, you can look however you want....
On a side note, these features are incredible, even if not for everyone, it just gives an idea of how far they were thinking, and there is probabely much more hidden under the hood
yea im really impressed by how far ahead they have thought this thing through. all the little things it does. and another great part is that they aren't really doing anything that is out of the realm of possibility for anyone else either, someone could get a WinMo or iPhone App to do all this stuff. i just love it when technology takes logical leaps all at once.
I myself own a Treo, but is Palm paying Engadget to hype the Pre? The pro-Pre rah-rah-rah-ing here is even more blatant than Slashdot's fake slash-vertisement stories. Did Engadget get any knee pads at least, for all the promotional fellating its doing?
I'm happy Engadget's covering it. The Pre is pretty freaking amazing. In the unlikely event that Palm is paying Engadget to cover the device it still wouldn't bother me much.
Damn, I thought that was Ozzy.
I'm surprised it took all the way til the 9th comment for someone to say this!
OMG! It's the crazy scientist from Independence Day!

Really sounds like the perfect $300+ smartphone for forgetful people in rural areas who have lots of appointments.
Seriously though, those are some nice features.
Looks like it's going to be an awesome device! Too bad it's a Sprint exclusive -- that's going to be its downfall.
I don't understand how he can bash other phones for being based of of desktop operating systems when his is based of a web browser!
I of course want this device to deliver on all it's claims though and it will be really interesting to see ATT with the iPhone, Sprint with the Pre, TMobile with the G1, and Verizon with the Storm.
Since around here I only have Sprint and Verizon and Sprint is cheaper I really hope this blows away the other competitors.

3 questions:
Will you be able to use the camera as a video camera?
Will the Palm Synergy synch with the Apple iCal and Address Book as well?
Will you be able to flawlessly import your Palm Treo data into the Pre?
