Samsung unveils Blue Earth, a solar-powered mobile phone

Samsung's Blue Earth handset might just be taking the green thing to a whole new extreme. Made from PCM, a recycled plastic from water bottles, the phone boast an "eco" mode for efficiently adjusting screen brightness, backlight duration and Bluetooth usage, and an "eco walk" app / built-in pedometer to tell you how much CO2 emission you've saved by walking instead of driving. The best part? It's got a giant solar panel on the back that'll apparently charge it enough to make a phone call anytime the sun's peaking out. Of the form factor, Sammy says it "symbolizes a flat and well rounded shiny pebble" -- which we hope means it can skip puddles with the best of 'em. It'll come in recycled packaging with an energy efficient charger. What we don't know, unfortunately, is what makes this phone tick, neither OS nor hardware specs. Not a word on price yet, but UK environmentalists can look forward to this one second half of this year.

shouldn't they launch a solar-powered cell phone in a country with a more equatorial climate, and hence more sunlight year-round?
This is nothing but JUNK! I don't know why people keep buying into this thinking that it is the fault of CO2 that causes global warming or climate change or whatever they call it these days. Wake up people you're being duped by these environmental Marxists!
i am surprised people like you know how to write and even have the opportunity to use a laptop to talk crap over the web. Gosh ... What type of education do you get where you live?
I hope you didnt get any; otherwise, that would show poor Return of Investment you got!
It's about time they picked up the tech the watch makers already put into production. With phones gaining such large LCD windows, it makes sense to use that to capture ambient light to help power all those power-hungry electronics. Even calculators do it.
Yawn... http://press.nokia.com/PR/199701/775492_5.html :)
Hey M! Do you even understand what I have said? It seems to me that you are the one who is illiterate.
Staying on topic, I personally don't like this device design wise, but any move towards being greener is a step in the right direction both economically and environmentally. Also, the whole green movement is not some ploy cooked up by marxists, but rather quite the opposite. This along with all other green products/services couldn't be anything, but good sense by capitalists in a capitalist market. So, what government entity or marxist organization cooked this all up?
Also, if its not the fault of CO2, NOX, putting heavy metals in water, methane, or some other chemical compound that WE emitted, then what is it?
It seems to me you are illiterate about several academic subjects.
Mrtrick, very move towards this "green" thing is a move based on a total lie. Don't you notice that they don't call it global warming anymore, they have changed the name to climate change and they blame it all on CO2, which is what you and I exhale. CO2 is also a miniscule portion of the entire green house gas thing. I don't even think that you know which is the major green house gas, if you're really a genius.
Now if you do not know what Marxism means maybe you need to use this thing that they call as the search engine. I call these guys ecoMarxist because that is what they are.
Dont just swallow hook line and sinker what you read on the magazine or the tabloids or what CNN, NBC, and ABC tells you. Research for yourself buddy.
Green is the new red. I guess you dont even know what this means Mr genius.
Barak if that's your real name. You are going the way of the Dinosaur (Now please don't tell me you are also a Creationist). If you call everything a lie with out real facts, you're out of the map. Go to the facts, not to what you believe. Is good to believe in something as you do; but without real facts, don't name it the truth, please.
