Palm joins Adobe's Open Screen Project, Pre to support Flash
Copy and paste, data tethering, and now Flash -- it looks like the Pre's going to fill in a lot of unchecked iPhone feature boxes, doesn't it? Yep, Palm's just joined Adobe's Open Screen Project, and there's no two bones about what that means: the press release flat out says "the Open Screen Project will help deliver Adobe Flash Player for smartphones on the new Palm webOS platform." That's especially interesting since the webOS SDK is so heavily based on web technologies and native player support potentially opens the door for Flash-based apps, which would instantly bring a ton of new devs to the Pre. That's not a bad thing. We'll find out more at the end of the year, when the mobile Flash player is due to arrive.

when is pre out?
around july
In the first have of the year. Anytime from tomorrow til the end of June. Some people say July, but that's based on a contest that mentions the could could be evilvered as late as July, which simply means H1 of 2009
I am caught between Pre, N97 and even possibly a 5800 if the price is right. Would certainly want the GSM version of this phone though. Whenever that one will come out.
As usual waiting is the hardest part. If palm wants a real strong open they need to launch with flash, that would kick them into high gear.
Camera flash with video recording is still missing. A pretty big deal in my book. The fact that manufacturers think they can get away without putting in video recording is preposterous.
Be patient, young grasshopper.. :) I've gotten the impression that the video recording capability might be implemented in future updates to the Pre.
The CPU that comes inside the Palm Pre has Hollywood Video... That means real time video of 30fps. On a Mobile Phone. OMG. Now what does that mean for battery? Who knows. That could be the issue right now. But I believe the goal in the end is Mobile Video Phones. Two way video.
Korea has had this for some time.
China is rolling it out now. Saw the commercials for it while I was there at Christmas time. Not on the Pre mind you, but on other hardware.
Considering the CPU and its capabilities in the Pre, I am positive some where down the line it will be possible.
Palm just needs to get the Pre out the door first.
Once the Pre makes it out the door and the money starts rolling in. Then look for another Update with Cameras on both sides of the phone and split screen video where you are talking video to video over the air.
The issue then becomes bandwidth. G4 and G5 need to be rolled out soon for this to happen.
With the new initiative in the Most Recently Passed Stimulus Package to increase infrastructure, I expect that to happen sometime next year, say just before the elections and to have full culmination just before OBama Runs for a Second Term.
Here, check out the CPU Specs. Judge for yourself.

It shows a whole host of capabilities.
Heck the Camera that Palm is using is 3 MP, and the CPU supports 12 MP. So go figure.
There is power to burn here on this CPU.
So check it out.
i'm glad to hear this. i wouldn't be surprised if this does steal a lot of iphone prospects. apples admitted refusal to support anything outside its tightly clenched fists has IMO hindered it in some aspects. especially w/ its initial support for adobe and flash. but i guess pressure is getting the best of them, because i thought i heard about apple finally greeting them w/ open arms a few weeks ago. the iphone is in for some very very stiff competition this year....which i think means that we'll see another iphone this summer/fall w/ again marginal upgrades (marginal from a tech standpoint, but significant enough for apple to glorify it in marketing like they usually do w/ their releases, and sig enough for people to swoon to retail locations and wait in extreme temps for it) business as usual
