Portland non-residents rejoice: Clearwire's WiMAX service to expand to major markets this year

Yeah, that's right, Portland, wipe that smug grin off your face. You too, Baltimore, because Clearwire has committed to a list of new mobile WiMAX launches for this year and next -- and needless to say, there are some major markets in the mix. In its earnings call this week, Clearwire revealed 2009 will see Atlanta, Las Vegas, Chicago, Charlotte, Dallas / Fort Worth, Honolulu, Philadelphia, and Seattle all take the plunge, while '10 will add New York, Washington DC, Boston, and San Fran (among other to-be-named metros). We're not sure whether they're talking about the same U300 USB modem that launched before, but the company has also mentioned that it'll be launching a dual-mode data card this summer, and ahead of that, we'll be getting that portable WiMAX WiFi hotspot by the end of this month. The goal is to cover about 120 million pops in 80 markets by the end of next year, which certainly seems strong enough to give the oncoming LTE rush a run for its money, doesn't it?[Via mocoNews]

Not if that LTE is 60Mbps like Verizon has tested.
Not that I think it will be, and it'll probably be so restricted and
capped as to be utterly useless, anyway.
So yeah, bring on the WiMAX.
I was going to get WiMAX, but Verizon will be adding LTE in more places then Sprint will be.
No more WiMAX. And you lost a huge cell phone maker, Nokia.

I would be smug if I could get clear's wimax with a built in HTC Max or Nokia N810, but Clear is only selling those bastard usb dongles - lame!
Intel sells an embedded WiMAX/WiFi combo adapter with a number of OEMs (manufacturers).
guess it wont be giving lte a run for its money in los angeles
i mean, its only the 2nd biggest metro in the country
yet its not even on the list
if it doesnt come till 2010 or 2011,
i have a feeling lte will beat it here
San Francisco/Bay Area is getting in 2010, I would say more is coming but how slow they are moving it's not funny

Does this mean that the HTC Max 4G that I bought is going to work in Seattle now... T-Mobile was testing LTE in Germany a few months back maybe I will see the benefits of that. Oh how I hate the lack of devices that support my surprisingly comfortable AWS.
