Apple stupidly rejects Tweetie 1.3 for foul language in Twitter trends
Apple's just reached a whole new level of stupidity in App Store approval shenanigans: the Tweetie 1.3 update was just rejected for displaying "offensive language" in its Twitter trend search view. Right, not for offensive language in the app itself, but for offensive language on Twitter -- an insanely strict new standard that could conceivably be used to reject each and every iPhone Twitter client out there. (And if you haven't noticed, there are quite a few iPhone Twitter clients.) Hell, Apple might as well reject the next versions of Safari and Mail, since they can display dirty words too -- and let's not forget the awful things people are doing with Notes and the camera. Better lock it down.
Look, Apple -- this is a nadir. Rejecting a Twitter client for Twitter's content is simply indefensible, and it's a sign that the App Store approval "process" is broken beyond repair. It's time to drop the seemingly-random black-box approach -- which has earned nothing but well-deserved scorn -- open up, establish consistent, easy-to-understand rules with a well-defined appeals process, and actually work with innovative developers like Tweetie's Loren Brichter to push your platform forward in the face of newly-stiff competition. The massive popularity of the iPhone and the App Store may prevent a mass exodus, but the best devs are going to leave if they feel jerked around, and we doubt a store full of fart apps and misogynistic jiggle apps is really the vision you had for your platform. Think about it.

amen
That's right.
This is one of the big reasons I won't buy an iPhone. I actually like apple and own a MBP, but I wan't my phone to be open.
Sanitization agendas are not exclusive to Apple, but such an assessment would require integrity, dignity, -and- a spine. Your subjectively lopsided views are truly fucked.
you're talking about Apple right?
I'm speaking of the author/site.
so is this the only defense for this? That seems as misguided as smokers arguing against smoking bans by saying "alcohol causes illness too, and its not banned".
Fact is, Apple are totally off the ball doing this, as is any other company who does something equally daft. I've only ever seen it from a major company once that I can remember, and this was Microsoft banning inane gamertags. I believe Engadget reported on that one.
Perhaps you want them to keep quiet about anything negative?
^Quite a mile of difference between placing into broad context and child-like finger-pointing as is done here. Why should Engadget/EngadgetMobile hold to a standard any higher than any other low-brow blog, right?
The hell you talking about? I guess you work for apple.
^By your own standard of 'logic', you must be a tool for Engadget/EngadgetMobile. Not true either? I didn't think so ...
Awww, wook at de poor widdle apple fanboy crywing when mean ol' engadgetmobile sez mean things about apple, how dare they! Those meanie heads!!!
I agree, engadgetmobile should only post positive things about apple.
Fuck you -and- your disturbingly skewed sense of 'logic'. No Apple products here, Nano-Dick. But, let's not allow those facts to interrupt your mouth-breathing trolling. Please continue, bitchboy ... You were saying ...
Nice. First you are whining like a little girl about how unfair engadgetmobile is for calling apple out for denying an app for ridiculous reasons. Now this article isn't about apple all of a sudden. How convenient!
Oh, awesome use of ad hominem... that really helps get your point across when you lack logic and common sense... just throw random insults, brilliant!
The sober argument has already been made, yet, you either lack the spine or proper sobriety to simply acknowledge it without misrepresenting it and without making your own ad hominem remarks. Given your lack of dignity and integrity, you get what you give. Fuck you (again ... and again ... and again ...)
.. And your vicious spiral continues circling southward as your forthcoming regurgitation of bile attests ...
1,000 "fuck you"s still cannot possibly justify apple's dumbassery here. Keep trying amigo, it's quite hilarious!
-Right- on cue, bitchboy. And -still- lacking an atom of integrity. I'm in shock-n-awe, I tell ya!
Already give up on needlessly attacking engadgetmobile and defending apple for being douchebags? Man, that was too easy.
Of course, how silly of me. Omnipotent Nilay (and his god-complex) is above reproach -and- above speaking for himself.
Congrats! You've just won the "Biggest Flaccid Phallus" award ... and the world is envious!
i can state pretty conclusively that you have to be the biggest, whiniest, most highly antagonistic troll I have ever seen grace the comments section on Engadget. Clearly you have some issue with Engadget and its readers and not the content since your comments have so far had little to do with the article other than talking smack about the authors. Do us all a favor and take your shittery back to Gizmodo or whatever small rock you crawled out from under. If however you can stop flinging inane insults in hope one sticks and actually state something articulate about your supposed point, im sure something useful can come out of it. Otherwise, get out or get over yourself, jackass.
^Cheerfully ignored. The truth -never- changes but is one royal bitch for you mouth-breathers to deal with.
hey at least I put a little cheer in your day! That's probably the last time that's happened since 1987 when your folks wouldnt buy you the Optimus Prime playset for Christmas.
I dont know what's worse. The trolls, or us "mouth-breathers" that keep ignoring the sign advising us not to feed you after naptime.
by the way, good job on voting yourself up for every reply you've made. Truly, you have mastered the fine art of having little to do with your free time. I applaud you sir.
^Thou dost protest too much. Such is the way of the true troll who does not fathom why it has 2 ears yet only 1 mouth. Humble, I am, in your very presence.
Does this mean engadgetmobile will be blocked too? heheh.
Anyway, Apple finally realized their faux pas - nothing to see here, move along.
backbeat FTW... I get what your tryiing to say... I voted you up ;-)... The article may be true but i thought this article was very unlike the usuale engadget style. Kind of sounds like it was written by some junior high kid.
It doesn't matter - damage is already done. Devs will all be flocking to Cydia.
They can really be idiots sometimes... oops! I said a bad word! Are they going to block iphones from going to engadgetmobile.com now too??? This is ridiculous... Thank God for my jailbroken, CYDIA READY iphone.
Jailbreak your phone and you won't even care :)
Rightly bashed. Just a ridiculous reason to ban an app and the comparison to locking down the camera/notes/browser from viewing inappropriate "things" is spot on. If another app store is doing something like this I would expect engadget to bring it up, but I'm not sure they are.
It would be great if they did report more of these things up to the masses so that the consumer knows and hopefully the carrier / auth board actually realizes how flawed their evaluation panel really is. Banning for the sake of what might appear? That's one of the most absurd reasons around for any company to do. Here's hoping at some point the platform actually opens up to reasonable standards without it being stunted in progress by insane fanboys to defend any ill-move they make so they never have to evolve.
mark my words: a month from now apple's going to put out their own twitter app that automatically censors "offensive" language.
So by that logic Safari shouldn't be allowed cause I could use it to look at porn
Does it Drop calls when someone drops the F-Word?
Actually.... that would be cool!
"Why you mother"*beep* *beep* *beep* *beep*
And yet every time Apple does something like this, the presses that matter (well, this one... cause none of the others matter anyway) all jump on it... they never leave the news.
Either they are just really dumb for acquiring all this 'negative' press... all on stuff that wont keep people from buying their product anyway... or they're really, really smart.
It kinda makes ya wonder...
No looking for a flame war here but anyone have an intelligent guess if BB App World or any other expected App store going to have the kind of restrictions and such that the Apple Store has?
Personally I don't care for Apple. Mostly indifference. But it seems to me recently (since Ipod came out) they have more or less had the Midas touch in spite of the many drawbacks. If they only opened up to a few more things how much more dominant can they be, ya know?
I currently have a Moto Q9h w/WM 6.1. I seriously looked at the iPhone this week and don't get the hype. The OS is wonderful to play with, but the phone has such limitations. With Skyfire on my Q9h, I watch hulu and use 50+ web-based flash and java apps for free (e.g., unit converters, live police scanner streaming, sky charts...) all with no prob. This article points to why Apple had not won over me - their control freakiness (app approval, no flash...). Even a jailbroken phone can't play flash worth a flip. Hacks know better.
Finally Engadget says something interesting... and err.. useful.
