Google sets up Android support team in Taiwan
There's not exactly a lot of details on this one just yet, but Google has now confirmed that it's establishing an Android team in Taiwan that will be charged with supporting various hardware makers developing Android-based products. Somewhat interestingly, DigiTimes initially reported that the team would also be providing support for companies making Android-based netbooks, but Google has since denied that report, saying instead that they would simply be supporting phones. Of course, that doesn't mean they won't ever support Android-based netbooks but, for now at least, that's the official line.

Wouldnt that mean its CLOSED-source if theyre telling you what to do??
(lol sorry, commie joke)
Another reason to drop the A-bomb on Android and make the leap to Apple...
With Apple you are free to chose the programs You want and at price that is just right!
please choke! kgreatthankxbye!
iGoon,
You forgot to mention that with Apple you can choose the hardware you want too. So long as it is Apple, of course.
Actually a commie" situation would be one in which all bwankers, such as Madoff would summarily have a bullet put through the back of their heads. Hmmmm... sounds like a plan.
please forgive the misspelling above.
uh....taiwan is Republic of China (ROC), not People's Republic of China (PRC)...taiwan is a democracy and an industrialized developed "nation" if u support its independence.
so, tell me, why commie jokes?
taiwan isnt communist...
fail.
What's more commie??
Android open source ,200+ apps or
iPhone closed 20000+ apps?
How is either Taiwan or China communist?
I guess that's probably the state of geography education in the K-12 system since some people still don't know what country is run by what government and generalize everything.
Taiwan > China
Not geographically.
Rather, its probably there because HTC is based there. Nice try though.
American people can't even tell where some states locates in their own country...
-Where is Washington States and where is Washington D.C.?
-What are the differences between Rhode Island and Long Island?
I bet some people can't even answer those questions correctly..
Duh, Long Island is longer than Rhode Island but Rhode island you can drive on.
@tkujerry
what does that have to do with anything? I just made a dumb joke because I'm half Taiwanese. And yes, I can answer your question. I do live in Washington STATE after all.
While Madoff did show the world that people shouldnt be as trusting, even to professionals and require more evidence than just a nod, a bullet wouldnt satisfy the lives of the people he has ruined. He needs an endless stoning, burning, etc w/e, just so people would feel some justice. It doesnt make sense, since prison life isnt that bad once you get used to it.
Cool!!!!! So is this like the apple iPhone development team? Now they can hack the crap outta g1,.,jailbreak,root,unlock ,tweak , . Sign me up for first g1 to come with iPhone os preloaded .
F off Google. Another American company moving jobs overseas. I wish nothing but bad things for executives that do this.
don't be stupid. This location will be used to support the Asian handset makers that choose to launch Android phones. Companies like HTC (who is based in Taiwan). This isn't outsourcing American jobs.
spin it anyway you want. i hope you fall down some stars... :)
fall down some stars? how many stars must he fall down before you are pleased?
well i was thinking of getting a G1 but now i will not if you sell to the US y not have the support in the US. apple is doing it y not others?
Why is everyone so dumb all of a sudden? This office is going to support MANUFACTURERS, not consumers. Google already has locations to support American hardware makers (are there any?) but since most phone companies are Asian it makes sense to develop a helpful relationship. What does this story have to do with Apple?
Also, use complete sentences.
Are you kidding me? Apple produces very little to anything in America. All of their manufacturers are outside the US, with the exception of Samsung (a Korean Company) that has fabs in Texas (however that does not mean they get them from Texas). I hate the fact that people believe Apple is not like every large corporation that has operations overseas...
Does apple brainwash everyone into thinking that they manufacture everything in the US? If they did the prices for those Iphones and Ipods would be quite costly... Wouldn't it???
Does Engadget have their own department/guy for doing quick photoshops for the articles or do the individual bloggers handle them? This is something I've often wondered, because some of these are kinda clever.
HTC is a taiwanese company
maybe thats why google is setting up support for hardware makers there?
If apple can do it google can do it,.,LOL I read that twice.
Google hardware???LOL
It's a search engine!!! Google wil never beat apple hardware , be realistic now.
Google is
a search engine
a video hosting service
a web browser
a mobile os
an email client
a reader
a 411 service
a maps service
a toolbar
a photo editor
you know what, just go here: http://www.google.com/intl/en/options/
Considering Apple outsources almost all of their manufacturing operations, I do not see why Google cannot also have hardware in the future. I do not believe it is to their benefit, an they will concentrate on software, however the possibility is not absurd. On the other hand it occurs to me that you might not know that google does not manufacture the phone....HTC does....therefore I am not sure what you are referring to. Has your creepy love for a multimillion dollar corporation, who outsources operations to third world countries, completely stopped you from thinking before you speak (or type in this case)?
They even have their own website!
There's also a strong possibility that google might jump on making Android-based netbooks since Taiwanese companies also started the netbook trend (asus, acer, msi...etc.)
I am so amazed the logic of some Americans here... just WOW!
You call that "logic"?
let's welcome 'police of the world - USA'~
seriously, care about your own business!!! you've not ruled the world yet and never will!!! chinese people are friendly, but not when you make us angry!!!
Let the fanboys spew..... iPhone is not nor will ever be an open platform.
Nice to see how one of the most profitable US companies in 2008 is helping the US economy by creating jobs abroad. Fuck you Google.
It's reasonable that google will have a support team in Taiwan because HTC is right there. Also there are a lot of big computer companies like Acer, Asus and MIS there. It's simply easier for google. By the way, my Chinese friend told me that Taiwan is indeed a part of China. China control Taiwan in the same manner they do to HongKong. So I guess the the android logo is wrong. I am pretty sure that's not China's flag.
The logo is right because that's Taiwan's flag. I don't want to discuss the political thing but your Chinese friend is wrong.
Your Chinese firend told you Taiwan is a part of China?
How about your Taiwanese friend told you something about Taiwan?
It's like to ask English people something about the America things.
Yep! Taiwan is part of R.O.China. But don't confuse the "Republic of China" and the "People's Republic of China".
(The ROC (Free China) currently holds the Taiwan Province and a little part of Fukien Province.)
The "de facto" capital of ROC is Taipei City, the provincial capital of Taiwan is in Nantou County, and the provincial capital of Fukien is on the island of Quemoy.
Your Chinese friend sucks.
your "chinese friend" said china controls taiwan just like honkong? did u know taiwan has its democratic government and currency system that hongkong doesnt have? Taiwan has everything an independent 1st world country has except china's constant power abuse...
Did u know about 40 years ago Taiwan was the official "Democratic China" in UN? But because of Communist China's involvement in UN Taiwan was kicked out by the greedy politicians who only see profits from mainland China's abundant resources...now everybody is cutting tie with Taiwan because of China.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Republic_of_China
sorry for the political rant, but I hate it when people keep calling taiwan as part of china.
Before I came to the United States, I had military service in Taiwan's Air Force. The main and probably the only enemy of Taiwan's armed force is China. That said, do you or your Chinese friend (who sucks by the way) still think that China has control over Taiwan?
China only has control over Taiwan ORALLY and that's it. A guy can always claim some girl loves him and it is not always the case that the girl does love him.
You can be a human if you have the characteristics (eg. thinking, language and etc.) of being a human. You don't need someone or anyone to approve that you are a human being.
Your friend from China is probably in another universe, 'cause I'm in Taiwan now and the man I voted for is currently my president. :D
To CP:
Sorry....HK HAS its democratic government and currency system(HKD) just like TW....
BTW,what David said was right. "China control Taiwan in the same manner they do to HongKong."
Because PRC do not rule HK actually. XD
From wikipedia:
Along with Macau, Hong Kong is one of the two special administrative regions under the One Country, Two Systems policy.[10] As a result, Hong Kong is largely self-governing, it has its own currency, legal and political systems, a high degree of autonomy in all of its affairs, with the exception of foreign affairs and defence,[11] and is generally not considered a part of mainland China.
To I'm from HK:
I must apologize for my lack of understanding of Hong Kong's government system. Its great to have a sensible discussion about such topic.
HOWEVER, i must disagree with you and David H. on China's involvement in Taiwan.
The current official name for hong kong is "Hong Kong Special Administrative Region of the People's Republic of China"; However, Taiwan has always been called "Republic of China". It is never being called "Taiwan Special Administrative Region of the People's Republic of China." Also in 1997, Hong Kong was officially returned to China from British and was recognized internationally; however, Taiwan was never handed-over to People's Republic of China and there are still countries who support Taiwan as an independent entity. Taiwan is still "Republic of China."
For some reason most of people from Hong Kong cant wait to see China taking over Taiwan. Please respect and understand why most of Taiwanese people don't want to be part China. Yes, most of us in Taiwan are ETHNIC CHINESE, but it doesn't mean we all have to part of PRC.
btw, does Hong Kong have a president? cause Taiwan does.
Taiwan is an independent country, NOT a part of GOD DAMN CHINA.
