iPhone OS 3.0 is coming, preview on March 17th

We just got the announcement, iPhone OS 3.0 is coming. Set your clocks, mark your calendars. It's going down March 17th. Apparently, we'll get a sneak peak at the new OS, as well as a look at a brand new version of the SDK. Exciting stuff indeed, and we'll be there live at 10am PST (1pm EST) with the liveblog. Apple's calling this an "advance preview of what we're building," so we're not expecting anything ready to go as of the 17th, but hopefully this will allow developers to start building toward future functionality (hey, how about some push notifications?), and presumably users won't have too many months to wait after that for the real deal.

could it be that copy and paste will finally show its face?
could it be now that most companies have touch screen phones that actually do things besides look pretty,
apple is going to implement software "features" that should have been included in version 1 of any recent year phone?
*cough*copy+paste*cough*mms*cough*video*cough*backgroundprocessing*cough*realbluetoothprofiles*cough*
even my free on contract 4 years ago lg flip phone could do those things.
You can *cough* MMS. you need to know how to do it. Tyr you're local ATT store they'll tell how to do it. Get you're facts straight next time you post something.
If it's just "performance" based improvements, it'll be a snoozer. Copy/paste, turn-by-turn, video, more than one Exchange account, please!
You can't even have more than one exchange account under the same profile in Outlook. Good luck with that one...
Background processing would be nice.
Yea, you don't sync to more than one exchange account over inets on any device. If you need email, use the exchange server's IMAP or POP3 virtual servers.
How about some background processing.
Ummm...I'm guessing that was supposed to read "...live at 10am *EST* (1pm PST)..."
or perhaps you mean "...live at 10am PST (1pm *EST*)..." since when it's 10am on the west coast, its 1pm on the east coast...
I think it's 1 PM EST and 10 AM PST. The sun rises from the east first.
i think it is very silly that there has been so much discussion around this already.
but since everyone else got their 2 cents in, why not?
i would agree that he meant "10am PST (1pm EST)"
not because of the sun (or the earth, which is the one actually doing the moving)
but rather because 10am is the local time for the California based company.
Isn't actually 10 am PDT and 1 pm EDT, since we are on daylight? I don't really care what the heck it is called, I just know that it will be on at noon Chicago time.
I want
copy/cut/paste
a cheap tethering option
and for the love of Mike, a real today screen
Just get windows mobile and be done with it... If you get a Touch Pro or Omnia it's much better than everyone makes it out to be.
Touch pro 2 and Omnia HD are coming soon as well...
correcting somebody and messing up yourself, grammar police failure!
Was supposed to be a reply to J.
correcting somebody and messing up yourself, comment reply failure!
How bout a full mms app for people like me that dont like using isendmms and mms buddy.
Hmmm... does this mean a new iPhone is coming soon?
STEREO BLUETOOTH (A2DP) PLEASE!!!!!!
i doubt itll be anything that will make me no longer want my 5800 (buying next week when my contract is up for renewal) and 5370 (getting when/if a NAM 3G version ever hits). but we'll see. i guess one never knows...
Why don't Apple just make a status icon on the top showing how many active applications are running and when you press and hold the Home button, it'll show you a list of running applications. Also, they seriously need press and hold but I'm sure they'll do something stupid instead like make you use multifinger gestures instead of press+hold
i wonder what they'll add. since it's a whole 2 to 3 jump in the OS numbering you have to think it's something pretty significant. i doubt it'll be anything to make me want an iPhone instead of a Pre (unless the new OS powers a new iPhone, then i'll hold judgment). anybody remember what was added from 1 to 2? maybe we can get an idea of what to expect. i'll be tuning in on March 17th.
You mean like the one that's coming in June referenced a million times on this site and otehrs as hardware rev 2,1? :)
Need SMS forwarding, MMS and true multi-tasking!
background change XD
video recording!
live messenger lk i chat!
thats all! not that big of a deal! PLZZZ
special announcement...
Apple press release...
After 2 years, we finally learned how to do MMS, Video and copy and Paste!
This is OS 3.0
Should have been in OS 1.0!
I will laugh if that was actually the case.
To be honest, I think Apple really needs to add in a decent messenger capacity. The iChat-style SMS messaging does not cut it. All WinMo smartphones have MSN messenger built in, all Blackberry phones have Blackberry messenger, as well as downloads provided by Blackberry themselves to give access to Yahoo, MSN, GTalk, AIM, and ICQ (who uses that one these days?). So far, I have only seen Apple allow into its store programs that (with the exception of one, though after reading a review I will not use it so much) really do not cut the mustard in the least.
That right there is about... 50% of the reason I never even considered an iPhone. They're amazing devices, but the BASIC uses it should have had still aren't around. Everyone here has already said it, but... heck, cut & paste is a BASIC for ANY smartphone. For corporate usage, I understand the lack of MMS, but then again 90% of the users of this phone are not necessarily using this as a corporate device. This is their phone for everything else in life that is not work-related. I do miss being able to receive MMS directly on the phone, but... because my phone can cut and paste, it's not as big a deal for me, since I don't really send MMS messages out very often... if ever.
The other thing that the update desperately needs to implement is some badly needed power-management improvements. The battery life of that thing is apparently almost as bad as my Touch Diamond.
No doubt iPhone 3.0 will come out at the same time as the expected mid-year handset refresh, much like what occurred with 2.0 last year. Background operation would be nice, although what might be better is the ability for developers to enable background operation on individual apps rather than having global permission (which would probably crash the handset PDQ).
I personally don't give a damn since they won't be delivering a new iPhone.
but..
I pray that they make this new 3.0 version 'un-unlockable and un-jail breakable' so i can receive a good dose of nerd rage.
I love reading message boards when nerds get pissed
That just means you wouldn't upgrade to the 3.0 firmware. They've have to offer something that can't be done via a jailbreak and 3rd party software to piss off the iPhone nerds (myself included). Of course, I'd probably be disappointed more than angry, after all it's still a great phone.
Nerd Rage, LOL!
A lot of free time on your hands today, huh?
YOUR G1 IS AS CRIPPLED AS THE IPHONE. YOU STUPID DUCK.
How many people have IPHONES and how Many People have "The Andriod" LOL SMILY FACE LOL
Another upgrade to a shit
Jonno, try Palringo (free from the App store), its a totally free mobile messenger app that allows access to Googletalk, MSN Messenger, Yahoo Talk, ICQ, AIM e.t.c e.t.c all in one place.
I would be happy with complete implementations of what they already have plus copy/paste. The ActiveSync implementation is a joke. Only the Inbox gets push notification so you have to turn off any filters you have set up that might put emails into project folders. The iPhone also does not let attendees be added to meetings, see other persons' availability, click (to dial) phone numbers in location field for appointments (really a must for business usage when concall numbers are put into the location field). Where is Exchange task synchronization? That's just basic!! While synching notes is an ActiveSync deficiency the other features I mention are available through ActiveSync if Apple would just get their act together.
Push notification for an IM client for AIM/YIM/MSN would be useful since data and phone usage are possible in 3G coverage areas
I heard that the refresh is going to have a front facing camera so you can iChat video conference. That would be flipping sweet.
