iPhone 3.0 to have copy and paste, Pre-like features -- but no background apps
Digg's Kevin Rose has a solid (but far from perfect) track record when it comes to Apple rumors, and he just drove the nerds of SXSWi crazy with his latest gaze into the crystal ball: he says the iPhone 3.0 will have copy and paste. Kev says that the interface is much like the magnifying glass -- you use two fingers to select the text you want, and then you can cut or copy. Sure, that's great, but we think the bigger news is that Rose says 3.0 won't have support for background apps -- which makes his claim that that 3.0 will bring the iPhone "up to speed with the Palm Pre" a little suspect. We'll find out what's what in just a few days, but in the meantime check the video of Rose after the break.

well i called that (assuming this rumor is true). im still getting a Pre cause i like the form factor and the OS but i knew it wouldn't be long before everyone had all those features that the Pre has. sure they seemed groundbreaking but really none of the features where anything that couldn't be done anywhere else. i think Palm's mistake was announcing the thing so far ahead of when they were going to release it. it takes much longer to get a phone ready for release than it does to make a couple apps. here's hoping Palm doesn't rush a buggy Pre out to try to sustain momentum.
and when i say i like the form factor and OS, i guess it's more of i like the idea of both since i obviously haven't used either yet. just judging from seeing it used.
Do you seriously have in US those shows with stupid fans shouting about a company product? There is obviously something wrong ... lol. Those guys need to get a life...
Those are the same people we see riding around with Apple stickers in their car windows.
Yes, in the states this is what some people do with their lives....btw If your wondering the rest of us do not live in their mothers basement like these two..... shakes head
I haven't watched this episode yet, but I wouldn't think this is the actual footage from the show. This is also a special episode, it usually isn't like that at all. It's also not a show on American television, it's a podcast.
Or get a G1 now and have services running in the background AND multiple tasks running. Wow, how original...
The blind brand allegiance to Apple still amazes me. When the iPhone first came out its UI really was light years ahead of everything else. But the competition really has stepped up their game on that front since then and they're still adding more features (and most of them already had more features than the iPhone to begin with.) Meanwhile its taken over 2 years for Apple to add things like copy/paste, video recording, background apps/multitasking, stereo bluetooth, etc. And even then, there's no guarantee you're going to have half those features this year. The UI's still pretty (albeit inefficient in a lot of ways) but it's no longer hard to find a pretty UI on smartphone's these days. But no doubt, people will camp out for the next gen phone just like they have every other. That 1984 commercial grows more ironic every day.
You misunderstand a lot of people who love Apple. I disagree that it's mostly about blind brand allegiance like you mention, but for people like me, it's a logical deduction. For the most part, in the recent past, most products Apple has released are my favorite in the market. Therefore, when Apple releases a new product, my expectation is that the product may also be another one of my favorites. To minimize wasted time, I will look at the company's offer to the market first.
Interpretation of this as a fanboy mentality is ignoring details. Have there been any recent Apple product decisions that were failures? Of course! Personally, the iPhone was not even a consideration for me until the 2.0 firmware. Apparently, that was the case for most iPhone consumers, as its logical to make that conclusion from the numbers.
The iPhone is not a pretty UI in a box. How many major developers are paying attention to the competition in the same way they are the iPhone? There's just no comparison yet.
Really, your comments only make sense on the surface.
There are several articles about PRE having FLASH support and I'd bet Apple is NOT going to have that in the iPhone with release 3.

I fail to find email/documents that I need to use copy and paste. There aren't any programs for this to be of business use as with spread sheets or font intense documents. It's no where near RIM so they have to follow what a competitor is coming out with and still aren't where the current WM smartphones are. Apple knocked the bottom out 2 years ago and haven't done anything since. FLASH ME Apple in this release 3.0. And about their video - it works in the jail broken phones. I'm not too optimistic over this proposed release.
LOL! Up to speed with the Pre? Hmm, lower res screen, no multitasking (background tasks), no flash/video sites other than YouTube, no keyboard, no stereo bluetooth, should I continue...? And I'm not even getting a Pre (HTC fan here).
What phone are you describing? 'Cause that's not the Pre!
Wow. A phone that can copy and paste. Only two years later. Good job Apple!
im into phone technology but evidently not enuff to understand- what are background apps? Is it the concept of many windows like on a computer, or like the cards on the pre..... someone educate me
Copy n' Paste ?? Incredible !!! Future's already here guys :-D
you can finally have copy and paste, but it will be $.05 cents a copy. That's why it took so long to get, apple had to find a way to inflict apple tax
I can't even think of the right words to describe those two individuals. All I know is, adults do not act that way, nor do they get excited about something like "copy&paste."
Good grief.
When are they releasing a new iphone? that's all I want to know...
"Up to speed with the Pre"??
Hell, the iPhone isn't even up to speed with Android and Android may as well have been in beta when it was launched. Now give me my Cupcake!
What's the big deal about Copy/Paste? I've used PDAs and Pocket PC phones since about the dawn of time, and I think I've used copy/paste maybe five times in total.
I think there are important things to quarrel over verses whether or not a handset has Copy/Paste support. (Hmmm... Stereo Bluetooth in a multimedia phone rings a bell...)
That said -- mine supports it. I use a Sprint Touch PRO.
I copy/paste a lot on my phone. It just comes in handy.
