iPhone 3G finally available contract-free
At long last folks with a contract phobia or just a general penchant for lawlessness can pay exorbitant amounts of money to get an iPhone 3G contract-free. As promised, 8GB models for $599 and 16GB ones for $699 are now available from AT&T and Apple stores, with AT&T requiring buyers to be existing AT&T customers, limited at one per, while Apple stores will sell the handsets to anyone wandering in off the street -- rebellious demeanor preferred.[Via Boy Genius Report]

extortion! ahhaha that price is insane. I am sure someone wealthy person will cough up that much
They are trying to get rid of the 3Gs because when June comes and the new iPhone is out, nobody will buy the old one (3G)
And what if the new iPhone is not meant to replace the 3G? Maybe it's a different type of iPhone.
@marco
Compare the 8GB $599 price with other similar phones and I don't think it's 'way' overpriced. I think for anyone who wants to stay with AT&T and need iPhone, this is not too bad. Nokia N-series trash N96 is about the same price as 8GB version. Moreover, you should be able to upgrade this 3G version to new OS come June to get MMS, AD2P, etc.
The fact that it's available to AT&T customers only makes me think that even it's contract-free but still locked to AT&T even in Apple store. In this case I don't see the point buying it without contract, what the point to pay this ridiculous price and still be tied up to AT&T.
i dont think it really matters that its still locked on att its not like u could use it for verizon or sprint or even metro pcs(which would be awesome, unlimited everything for 50 bucks) and as for tmobile u can use it but the iphone doesnt support its 3g
Exactly!
When EXactly does the iPhone Exclusivity contract End?
I know at first it was till 2009 but then got Extended to 2010 and should be available to other Carriers in 2010 because the contract will have run its course.
Thats crazy...
Well, Im getting an iPhone in June. Most likely the day after 3.0 OS releases. All i have to decide now, is either to add a line for an extra $10 a month for 2 years or just go ahead do the early upgrade for $400...
Hmmm....
Early Upgrade: $600 for the iPhone off contract
Added Line: $10/month x 24 = $240 + $200 for the iPhone on contract = $440.
Is the $160 saved worth having to change your number?
WOOOHHOOO apple have finally released it on pay as you go; but it is SOOOO expensive
