iPhone 3.0 beta 2 released, push notifications are a go
The rest of the mobile industry might be gearing up for CTIA to start, but Apple's phone elves are toiling away -- iPhone OS 3.0 beta 2's just been released to developers, along with the go-ahead to start developing for push notifications. Thankfully, beta 2 also apparently includes a number of stability and performance enhancements, which will hopefully make our tester phone tolerable again -- we've been restarting beta 1 basically every day since we sacrificed it to the hands-on gods. Devs and beta testers know what to do to snag the upgrade, let us know how it goes!

Just downloaded it and I'm installing now.
Wanna be generous and add me to your dev list so I can be happy too?
One more thing MMS is fully functional in this build!
Guess that's a no :(
How's the stability?
Give me your 40 digit device ID and I'll add you, I think I have a few slots left.

No it will not lock your phone. If you want to be added to my dev allow list to run 3.0, email me. erronr at gmail dot com
HELP, DOES ANYONE KNOW HOW I CAN GET THE NEW SOFTWARE NOW, IM NOT A DEVELOPER??? HELP PLEASE
I am hoping there is a jailbreak for this soon :)
I installed Beta 2 this evening. Everything seems to be running significantly faster. Like many 3.0 users, I experienced very sluggish performance and numerous bugs. Copy and pasting, landscape rotation in SMS/email and overall performance is much faster. MMS is still not working, but that is probably on the carrier side.
Its working for me. Receiving anyway. I haven't tried sending.
Make sure you call att and have them enable wap push.
Developers are luckier than the person who got the first iPhone.
MMS is working now as well. Odd. I wonder if they are using push notification to send pics to iphones or something?
Does anyone have the link to the download.
For me, it fixed bugs in Safari, and Street view. Also, music will now play in coverflow again! Oh, and there is a new store area in the settings, which is odd because there is no icon next to it, and there is nothing in the store settings pane.
I updated to the 3.0 about a week ago through the DEV Center. I instantly lost all my iTunes Library. The texting worked in landscape, the MMS did not work, but I figured out that was because I had MMS OPT out on my account through AT&T. The search iPhone part was probably the best "running" part of the beta version. But it was all too good to be true. My iPhone started to act weird. Every now and then the sound would cut out and I would get no sound whatsoever. Then the texting started to freeze randomly and act as if it was the old Motorola software where you could text faster than it would respond. I would have to hard reset my phone constantly. When making a phone call, it would not allow me to go to the home screen to text or run other applications. Some of the apps that I had downloaded did not work, but I figured that would happen because 3.0 is new software and firmware updates. My phone would randomly change ring styles, from loud to soft, then in the middle of a phone call the volume would go all the way down to 1, then back up again. My bluetooth would not work as well. It would show the connection being there but would never actually connect during a phone call or wouldnt allow me to switch between phone/bluetooth/speakerphone. Those were the main issues I had with it. I WOULD NOT recommend anyone other than DEV or beta testers to get the 3.0 beta yet. There are way to many issues, but thats why they release the beta versions... to find out the problems. I took my iPhone up to the Apple Store here in Fort Worth and guess what... they told me that they do NOT warranty any iPhone with 3.0 version. I was upset at the fact that Apple would release the software, then not be willing to help the people that are brave enough to try it. After about 30 minutes with a Genius manager, he agreed to swap my phone out under warranty. He agreed with me that it wasnt right to not help me, but his hands were tied because he was told that anyone with 3.0 on their iPhone would not be covered under warranty, and that they would consider it to be an OOW issue. Anyways... I think the 3.0 will be good once the bugs are fixed and things get rolling in the right direction... Come on Apple... You got some of the smartest people in the world writing your code... I would expect this from a Microsoft product but not from Apple.
David, There was not a huge architecture change from 2.2.1 to 3.0 as there was in from 1.1.4 to 2.0. Many of the performance issues (lagging and freezing) can be attributed to a couple of things. First, did you restore from a back up from a 2.2.1 image? That has caused problems for many people. Second, Apple will surely have things not fully implemented and will be running debuggers during early betas so that will strain the performance. I have not heard anyone complain about losing their iTunes library when going to 3.0 so it must be something in the way you made the move to 3.0? You are correct, this is a developer beta not a user beta so it is going to be buggy. The beta 2 release is much better and I am sure that any future seeds will be better as well. I can only remember one seed in 2.0 that seemed to be a step back and it was quickly addressed. Anyone who expects a beta to be smooth running should not be using one. That's part of the fun! I have a Nokia E51 in my bag in the off chance I can't use my iPhone due to a bug.
The only problem I have had since switching to 3.0 is a loud screech and the phone got dangerously hot when I tried to charge it last night. That is not a sw issue but a hardware issue which will be addressed with the Apple store today.
cmatthew. do you have another slot available? I would love to get the 3.0 on my iphone
Since installing 3.0 I have had many issues, but of course I knew this before installing it would be "buggy". Overall, I like what I see. I will appreciate tethering capabilities, MMS, and push notifications the most.... and of course, I do not have access to any of these with beta 2 ;-(
Have fun with it.
