AT&T's Samsung Impression hands-on with video

With AT&T's Samsung Impression packing things like quad-band GSM, dual-band HSPA for the Americas and a supremely useable QWERTY keypad, we're suitably impressed. All that magic aside, the screen, a fairly giant 3.2-inch AMOLED number, is where the big draw for us lies. The display is completely stunning and viewable from just about any angle, the keypad is pretty much right on, and the set just feels like money to hold onto. Coupled with a reasonable 3 megapixel cam with digital zoom and geotagging support, and we're expecting this to be a wildly popular device at its $200 price point. We tried to capture the beauty of the Impression with vids -- we've taken the leap from VGA -- and pics which you'll find right after the break.

all i want is the updated software for my eternity.
Wifi? If it had that then it would be a nice little phone.
it DOES have wifi according to most of the specs i have read... am i wrong?
That was great when he dropped it--FAIL...EPIC FAIL! LOL!
Does it have a Capacitive screen like iPhone?
No it is resestive.
I have been using this device for two weeks now. if you are expecting an iPhone killer, you will be dissappointed. if you are looking for a good feature phone that is not a PDA than this is the thing for you. the keypad is amazing. touchscreen a very responsive. camera is nice. the only thing it lacks is Wifi and Mobile TV. the one thing i found annoying is the placement of the lock key. its pretty flush and hard to find sometimes and its hard to press with right hand.
Overall its a great phone that packs a good punch!
The Pope rates this a 4.25 out of 5!
Thanks for the information. Does it have Smart Dialing? That is, if you start dialing numbers to make a call does it bring up names based on T9 input?
Eg; if I want to dial to T-O-M, I dial 8(TUV) - 6 (MNO) - 6 (MNO)
Samsung already killed the iPhone when it released the Omnia , and HTC buried with the touchHD.
I can tell you for sure because I have had all of those phones and I still have the best two.
What I would really like to knoe is where I can find all those new widgets for the TouchWIZ on my Omnia.
Why Does'nt Samsung makes them available to all touchWIZ users?
I am tempted to upgrade to the new OmniaHD when it will be available, but if I will not , it will be because of the nonexistent customer support and after sale upgrades Samsung provides to its customers.
It should learn from HTC, Apple and even Nokia.
I have had both The touch HD and the Omnia for six months and I've got 7 firmware updates from HTC and 0 from Samsung (and it's not like it could'nt use some).
This is something I will sure keep in mind when next summer I'll be choosing my next phones.
What is the Screen resolution? QVGA, HVGA, or VGA?
haha, welcome voyager killer. looks fantastic
does it have at&t tv? (media flow)
Someone with a Samsung AMOLED screen - please, tell us how it works, especially in the sun. I was a little put off by the video in this article - frankly, its ability to let me comb my hair in the screen is not a big plus. Glare & reflection. Then when the center area came on with an actual picture or whatever, the glare seemed to vanish from that part. Not actually sure.
Just picked up an Impression today at local ATT store. Was a bit surprised as I was in to look (again) at the Eternity and most likely intended to walk out with a (god help me) iphone. Disclaimer: I'm old and hold grudges; Stevey boy killed my Newton way back when so I am NOT a fanboy. I just REALLY wanted google maps with gps and the iphone was pretty much it. My Helio Ocean died last week (screen is dead, though can still take calls. A bit difficult to make them, though.) The surprise part was when the sales guy said they had the Impression already and it was available for sale, when I thought it wasn't due until next week (more on this.)
I will say it's pretty nice to hold and the screen is DAMN nice looking, even outside. I've played around with an iphone but not used one extensively so I can't really compare how the screen responds but from what I've so far experienced, it works really well. I'm almost of the mind that the slide out qwerty is completely unnecessary. The only reason I can think of Samsung including it is to not kill sales of their non-qwerty Eternity. The Impression as just a touchscreen would be completely acceptable.
This is the first new phone I've had in 2 years so I'm not so used to using a new gadget. I thought that loading up the included cd would help, maybe load up a manual or drivers or something. No go. The included cd only has links for the "English Manual" that takes you to Samsung's site that, hey, has no documents whatsoever. Nope, No downloads at all. So the next thing I try with the cd is "install drivers"; this link takes you to a proprietary webpage that says (no joke) "confidential information. do not release this website publicly. This page is intended for Samsung and ATT employees only". So what's guy to do? I downloaded the Eternitys manual. Better than nothing.
I am a bit sad that I didn't notice I needed a proprietary headset and/or adapter to listen to my music. This kinda blows and is a possible factor of my returning it. I hate having to use a dongle or an expensive (and most likely crappy) headset OR an expensive and eventually throw-away bluetooth stereo headset. I've not decided just yet as the announcement that Samsung is opening Touchwiz to development is slightly promising. I will hopefully have more of an impression on how this thing works next week.
