T-Mobile reveals some juicy G1 stats, half of users traded up from dumbphones
As Android goes, all eyes might be on the Magic at this point -- but T-Mobile USA's still rocking the G1 hard, and they've got the stats to prove it. The carrier has announced that "roughly half" of its G1 buyers traded up from a dumbphone of some sort, which should really help them put that nascent 3G network through its paces in earnest. Proof of that lies deeper in the numbers: 80 percent of G1 customers are browsing the web on a daily basis from the comfort of their device -- a testament to the goodness of WebKit, we reckon -- over half are using Facebook and YouTube at least once a week, and half are hooking up to WiFi on a daily basis. HTML and streaming video aren't the only things burning through AWS bandwidth, though; T-Mobile's also claiming that the average G1 customers has downloaded over 40 frickin' apps from the Android Market, and four out of five download apps at least once per week. We imagine that number will level off now that paid apps are scaling up, but still -- that's an impressive stat.

...and 100% of them have to recharge their G1's 3 to 5 times a day to make it through the day, with gps, wifi, and 3g off.
well, i don't know what they are doing- with wifi on at home and gps etc off rest of time and bit of surfing but lots of using, my G1 with regular battery last easily over a day....
That's bullshit. Buzz off troll.
Troll or not, Carlos is right. Battery life on the G1 sucks, even with moderate usage. The Seidio 1400mAh battery is a must on this phone.
BTW, where are these stats coming from? All I see is a like to t-mobile.com.
i never have to recharge it threw the day. it was bad when it first came out i had to recharge about 3 times a day but they fixed it in an update i guess.
I don't believe either Paul or Carlos has a G1 (and probably have never used one). Their obvious regurgitation of what they read online is proof of that.
I do have a G1, and have been using it non-stop since the day it was released back in October. Here is what I keep on (non-stop) throughout the day:
Bluetooth
GPS
And I turn Wifi on and off depending on when I need it.
So here's the truth about the G1's battery life; it varies depending on what apps your running in the background. You see, unlike most other phones (iPhone included) the G1 can run background apps so you can listen to music while texting, or have a twitter client constantly picking up the latest tweets while you surf the web. These background apps will make it harder to use your battery for longer periods of time depending on how many of them you use.
That said, however, my own personal G1 (which constantly has Twidroid running as a background app) gets me through the day completely without needing a recharge. Even then I'm really only at about half of the batteries lifespan. So make no mistake when I tell you that the poor battery life on the G1 is greatly exaggerated and has been improved greatly by firmware upgrades over the last 5 months. While I've certainly seen G1 batteries get drained before a day goes out it all depends on how you sue the phone. Don't clog up the system with needless background apps and be smart about what your downloading and at most you'll only need a nightly charge.
Oh and for the record I don't just sit at home all day long either. I'm up at 6 am and I don't get back into bed (on a weeknight) until about 12am - 1am .
I turned off GPS, 3G, Bluetooth (don't use it).. and it survives the day. Usually it's pretty well drained though. I think maybe falling in and out of coverage might do it. I get many emails throughout the day though, which is the only thing that's running...
The 1400mAh battery sounds interesting, if it gave like 5 extra hours it would probably be worth it.
That 2600mAh one looks crazy, though it comes with a custom cover. It might actually make it easier to handle since I have larger hands, though I'd hate to shove that loaf of bread in my pocket...
Oh I forgot... I also have 3G turned on at every second of every day.
