Apple and Stanford to offer free iPhone development courses online
Would-be iPhone developers struggling to make their apps do more than fart and crash take note: Apple and Stanford have partnered to offer videos and course materials from Stanford's undergraduate iPhone app development course through iTunes. The course is being taught by two Apple engineers, and it sounds like videos will go up regularly -- the first is scheduled to post on Friday. Alright, let's all practice together: "Yeah, I took a class at Stanford." Sounds good, doesn't it?[Via Wired]

yes!!! just what I've been waiting for, that made my day
Too lazy to read the article though; US only?
Too lazy to answer you question.
>Samboini; It's available in.. ups too lazy to finish my comment. Seriously what's that?
I was too lazy to comment, plus I got turned into a newt... but I got betta.
I was planning on porting an Android app I wrote to iPhone, so this is good news... can't beat a FREE course in software development! (even if it is for a proprietary, closed platform)
could stanford be any further up Apple's butt?
Good! now i can develop an iqueef app! :p
i love the internets anonymity :)
I've also been waiting for something like this! This is really nice. Recently bought an iPhone SDK "Cookbook".
I'm trying right now to install OSX on one of my PCs and it hasn't been fun. Either I keep tryin' or I'm getting a Mac myself soon.
@ *Just some girl
Then I can development an iDump-yer-stinky-snatch app!
Love them Interwebs anonymity too!
It was a joke, that one flew over well!
@ haxor
anything but.
BTW do you even know what it is? and how it comes to be ? sheesh you clearly must not have a very active sex life.
and FYI it has nothing to do with odor.
@ *Just some girl
Perhaps you didn't get that my reply was just a joke as well.
Then again, you may have a stinky snatch that produces some foul smelling queesf ;)

LOL....that made blow rootbeer through my nose. shit that burns.!! Thx
OMG. My next iApp...iRootbeer-through-the-nose...sweet!!
I didn't know people still drank Rootbeer?!?
I hope they don't have high prerequisites like C++ or Object-Oriented Programming (OOP). I remember those days in college and my head is still spinning from pointers, pointers of pointers, memory management, etc.
If anything it'd be Objective C
Apple++
If not OOP, what would you like to program in?
You: "iPhone, make app that copies and pastes stuff!"
iPhone: "########...thinking...########"
iPhone: "Can't do, too dangerous for the users. Please try another command. Thank you!"
You: "FU*K!"
My thoughts exactly. Non OOP languages are tougher to do GUI apps in. Though I suppose a smartphone program written in assembly would have astounding performance :)
I'd say MIT's opencourseware is more valuable.
It still really irks me that the iPhone SDK is only available on a Mac.
Indeed, it is annoying that the tools are only available on Mac OSX. It would be cool if Microsoft ported the .NET Framework, or the Mono project could even make a port to the iPhone/iPod Touch as well. That would be awesome.
Not to be mean, but if you can't figure out a way around that, how were you going to write applications?
Why? You're developing for OSX...it's not like my Mac can somehow develop for Windows...
er, wait....BootCamp....
I was HOPING to write applications from Windows or Linux to the iPhone, but god forbid a proprietary system is multi-platform these days.
i think it is fine, at least there are not thousand of message asking for a help because they can't connect their iphone with Eclipse or vs.net
Why would you want to create apps on Windows that only run on a Mac? That's like saying I want to do WIn32 development on OS X. Makes no sense.
Well gee you are probably going to make money on said app, and a low end macbook costs say what at the refurb store $899. If your app is worth fart- pun intended you probably will make that in the first day.
I just bought a Dell Mini 9 with plans to load OSX onto it, specifically for the purpose of doing iPhone development on it. All told, cost should be under $400. I hate touchpads though (I may later look into loading OSX on a Thinkpad), and I'm worried that the keyboard will be too small to comfortably develop on it.
haha, this just proves the dominance and superior capabilities of OSX. Other OSes should take note.
Notice: Don't feed the trolls.
Haha, that was pretty funny. You know, I can't argue with you because I don't know the backbone of OS X like I do with Windows, so I cannot tell you why I see scientists, professionals, smart people with decent level of programming abilities using OS X. The Unix backbone must be useful in that regard.
what a waste of time. LAWL
Like your entire life and subsequently your post.
Can you develop on a hackint0sh ?
I don't see why not as long as it's Intel.
nicee im definitely gonna try to take part in this..
Looking forward to it - anyone know what time they are due up?
Yeah that'd be a nice piece of information... looking forward to dl'ing... If only I knew when to expect it!
They are (in the UK at least) - iTunes link:

Apple is truly in the stone ages in terms of drawing in developers. Microsoft has received so much flack for its attempts to speak to the consumer market on this site and many times deservedly so. However drawing in developers is one thing it does really well. The fact that I would be forced to developed in the antiquated Objective-C in a minimalistic development environment is ridiculous. It is for this reason that I think the popularity of the iPhone will be short lived. While they did provide many cool features, others are catching up and in some way passing Apple. With features being the same, the ability do easily develop applications on a platform will become crucial. This is one of the reasons the PC/Windows did so well in the first place.
Apple to me does a great job in replacing Sony at providing great consumer products (ala the iPod) in the new century. However it will never be a leader on platforms that involve drawing in developers to create applications.
"I think the popularity of the iPhone will be short lived"
I'd take that bet. I've not programmed for the iPhone but it's dead simple for the Mac with the likes of Cocoa Bindings, Core Data, etc. Given this I am not sure what your problem with it is. Certainly it doesn't seem to be putting off developers at the moment and I really don't see that situation changing anytime soon.
still pushing the kool-aid, I see.
Never did have much respect for Stanford anyway.
superhobo;
Spoken like a true Cal weenie.,
It's Stanfurd, for cryin' out loud...what do you expect?! Go Bears!
You can program for the iphone in c#, some appstore programs have been written this way.

I bet David Bolton gets all the chicks.
EFF that...go bears!!!
