We were never able to track down an
E71x with a SIM and an active AT&T Navigator account, but it's pretty clear from our time with the device that AT&T has left its S60 3.2-based core pleasantly untouched. We wouldn't call it "virgin" by any stretch, but the profile can be tweaked to your liking, we weren't able to find any options that were notably absent, WiFi's still there, and you can file all of the unremovable AT&T crapware in a separate folder that you'll never use (and yes, we did verify that it can't be uninstalled, sadly). And let's not forget -- you're getting one of the sexiest smartphones ever made for a penny shy of a hundie, so really, what do ya got to complain about?
where's the transition effects you can find on feature pack 2? was it disabled or did AT&T remove it?
This phone didn't have that. S60 FP1. My wife's been using it for a long time now & really likes it a lot. It's got problems, but overall works well & is super easy to use/type on.
I know the unlocked E71 runs on FP1..but the AT&T E71x is suppose to run on FP2....
The screen transitions are an effect that can be turned on and off. On the N85, for some reason the default setting is off. Since the E71x is also Feature Pack 2 I'd guess that it's probably set to off by default as well.
all that sexiness..
How much longer must I wait for this phone, please say they fixed all the problems already. Yeah it looks good and all but I need a good phone (that's cheaper than the iphone) I'm thinking if it doesn't come out in the next month it will never come out.
we will see my friend we shall see
lol ... Stop messing up with the value of the original product AT&T ... :-) ... I'm glad that I own a ORIGINAL E71 ... Screw AT&T!
Yea, I have the silver E71-2 as well, and love it. The only thing I wish I could have is Feature Pack 2 (which AT&T's version has) !
I would like AT&T navigator for my E71-2. The monthly use is actually cheaper than Nokia Maps navigation.
Knowing AT&T's history with releasing the hot Nokia phones, this one will probably end up being released in May - May 2010 that is! AT&T's management sure is a snappy, competent bunch all right (**cough 9300 2-year delay cough**).
the real test is installing Opera mini and seeing if there is a stupid java nag... anyone remember the e62 from att? the java nag crippled that phone. Im wondering if the phone could be unbranded? iunlock???
I just got the phone last Friday. It's my first smartphone.
It does have the stupid java nag for every java application that uses the internet connection.
This is really annoying. I would have bought E71 if I have known this issue.
Does anyone know how to disable the stupid nag screen?
Is there really no way of getting the original software that Nokia did that obviously does not include the ATT crap?
What is the actual difference between the E71 and the E71X??
Since, my sister bought a 6650 from AT&T and it has FP2 on it, so I'm going to guess its missing the same things. Hers didn't have the Nokia search application on it, I hate you for that AT&T and I will hate you more if its gone on the this phone. The GPS data application that I use from time to time was gone, Nokia Maps of course was gone, but you can load that on your own, Landmarks was gone, Download! was gone obviously, and the Tetris game on the unlocked E71 I guarantee is gone. The barcode reader is most likely gone too. I think the real test is going to be seeing how much of a messaging device is left, as in did they mess with the home screen switch and whether all the notifications you can have on your homescreen are still going to be there, and also the customization of the 3 shortcuts for contacts, calendar, and email.
maybe i should've watched the video first, haha. Everything I said above is gone except for the messaging part which the video couldn't confirm, and the search feature. So from the video we can see that active notes is gone, as is the dictionary, WINZIP is gone!! Those assholes. Can't confirm the intranet thing, printers, internet radio is gone, internet telephone app is gone. That's all I got so far. And I don't know why I had hopes that AT&T would leave most of the stuff there.
I don't understand the love for this device. Engadget keeps referring to this device as *sexy*... Huh? What's so enticing? I've seen this form factor and feature set over and over for the past two years. Doesn't seem very special to me. Am I missing something?

You're probably missing the fact you're ignorant and pretentious... First of all I doubt you know of any other phone that has the same form factor and feature set as this phone. From what I understand the E71 is the thinnest QWERTY phone on the market. The E71 also uses a fairly robust operating system that's in the process of being open sourced. http://www.symbian.org
Perhaps you'll have to get it in your hand to understand...
I believe though, that much of it's sexiness comes from what some view as the first really good implementation of Symbian that has some really useful features and is not noticeably slow.
I can only look at me E70-2 and lament.
I got to mess around with an unlocked E71, and I fell in love. Its metal casing, its thinness, its awesome keyboard and shortcut keys...its really nice.
I just wished they released it 6 months earlier on a US carrier, its not so great anymore considering how long its been out already unsubsidized and the smartphones to be released in the near future, but yes it still is quite sexy.
So I'm guessing we'll see the E81 before this comes out.
Honestly, how long has it been since release? Coming up on a year? Maybe this is why everyone hates the carriers so much. A year to get a phone out? Ridiculous.
I have the E71 which is almost identical to the E71x and all I can say is that Mr. Ziegler must have low expectations. Overall this is a good phone but not worthy of rave reviews.
The phone has nice looks and feel but Nokia dropped the ball in several areas. Some of the hardware designs are just stupid and the software that is included is not well designed either.
The home row of keys are laid out very bad.
The headphone jack is in a very bad position on the side above the volume control.
The back light on the keys is non existant making the phone hard to use at night.
The number keys could have their own row instead of accessed with a combined function key + alpha key.
The volume of the speaker phone is way too low.
Even on the Outdoor profile you cannot hear the phone ring unless the room is fairly quiet.
There are a lot of useless programs included with the phone and and the ones you need are poorly designed and none of them can be removed. This is made worse by the fact that there are not many 3rd party applications for the Symbian OS.
Nokia has a lot of goofy built in folders, like Microsofts My Music, My Books, My Photos and you can't remove any of them. The included browser has several bookmark folders all of which are rediculous and cannot be removed so when you create your own bookmarks you have to scroll through the mess made by the Nokia bookmarks. The home screen layout is just plain silly. You cannot set defaults for where applications should store and search for files, so when you open things like images the silly application spends several minutes searching the memory and any memory card, the same is true for the music player. If you hit the backspace key while browsing your music the song is deleted not just removed from the library so ALL audio files showup, even ringtones and alert tones! There are a lot of other software desing problems but it would take a while to describe all of them.
All that said I would still recommend this phone to anyone that is tired of Windows Mobile crashing and doesn't like the fact that the iPhone doesn't have a qwerty keyboard.
