N97, but regardless, we like it. Nay, love it. Ship it, Nokia. Anyhow, the FCC has published full submitted details of one of the non-North American varieties of Nokia's halo device for the year, putting GSM / EDGE 850 / 1900 and WCDMA band II (1900MHz, if you're curious) through their paces along with the FM transmitter, Bluetooth, and WiFi. We've also got a manual to peruse -- unfortunately, details on the Ovi Store are missing, but at least we can brush up on our phone basics before we get our hands on a device. Anyone else totally forget that it's got an internal magnetic compass, or was that just us?

anyone know if any major US carrier is going to pick it up sooner than later? AT&T is the prime Nokie proponent, but they have the flagship iPhone.
i doubt it...Nokia is just now getting rebuilding its relationships with US carriers. But i'm still gonna cross my fingers...

I've been a loyal Nokia customer, but my last one (N91) absolutely sucked but I'm really hyped up for this one. Although, I'm wondering about apps on this phone. For me it comes down to N97 and iPhone 3.0.
I was able to play with N97. It's awesome but price difference to 5800 is too much. You just get qwerty for paying $400.

No, it is NOT the first Nokia phone with tri-band WCDMA -- see the N85.
Yes, there are still differences between the "standard" and "NAM" versions:
* "Standard" supports WCDMA over 900, 1900, and 2100 MHz
* "NAM" supports WCDMA over 850, 1900 and 2100 MHz.
Basically, the former is suitable for both WCDMA bands in Europe, and one for roaming in North America; whereas the latter is suitable for use with AT&T Wireless & Rogers, with a roaming frequency for the rest of the world.
None of these will work on T-Mobile USA's 3G network (1700 MHz).
Non-North American version because of 1900MHz WCDMA? Well here in Canada we use that 1900 MHz for 3G, thank you very much. It's only in some parts of the US that 1700 or 2100 MHz are used.
No, non-NAM because there will be a NAM version with support for another WCDMA band, 850 MHz. (850/1900/2100).
Not so fast about Canada -- a UMTS network over the 1700 MHz (AWS) band is being deployed by Telus.
Not so fast about 2100 MHz in the USA either - it does not exist. (True, the "downstream" frequency for T-Mobile's network is 2100 MHz, but this network is usually referred to as 1700 MHz, since it is incompatible with the international 2100 MHz standard).
I believe only downtowns have some 1900, the rest of the country is 850.

Feel free to flame me back if I'm wrong here, but why the hell would the Federal Communications Commission of the United States of America have or publish data on a phone that is not being certified to operate in the U.S.A.? Is the assumption that Nokia has axed its PR department and now pays $20k to submit photos and documents to the FCC instead of issuing press releases?

The N97 will most likely be available in Magneta (pictured), Cyan, Black, and Yellow
