what does rooting have to do with the supposed "cupcake" update? Not til recently when the magic roms were released that we had an even sort of stable rom to run close to to 1.5.
root just gave more flexibility to what you want to do to the phone, super user apps, themes without the home apps. what convinced me to root was the much needed ability to stop running apps in the task manager.
