We reported not long ago that Verizon had been
planning to release 4.7.0.113 as its next official firmware update for the Storm, and now,
PC World is reporting that it'll finally be dropping sometime int he next two weeks. Considering that other 9530 carriers have already rolled out post-113 builds to their customers, we can't help but wonder a couple things: first, whether 113 will still be the chosen release, and second, why RIM can't get all of these carriers on the same page. It seems a bit silly for Bell to have signed off on a recent build while Verizon's still hemming and hawing; realistically, Bell, Telus, and Verizon probably could've collaborated with RIM's assistance to get a more unified roll-out underway. In the meantime, Verizon's looking silly, slow, and out of touch.
I am running 4.7.0.122 on my Verizon Storm and it rocks!!!!!!
Like he said... .122 Rocks!!!
I still end up using quick pull each night automatically but it runs smooth all day...
I wish Verizon Wireless would open up their beta testing and let some of us try out what they are, and heck we could probably find the bugs faster anyway, and cheaper. For them...
I tried .122 but it kept freezing on the clock app and i'd have to battery pull. I'm using a .113 hybrid and it's absolutely perfect fast screen orientation switch, camera is actually usable and it's just overall fast. Beats the shit outta the current .75 release on Verizon.
Its been rumored from just about every source since early Feb. -- I doubt this one is any more reliable.
That being said - I hope their right.
Verizon out of touch???
Never.
I have to imagine that verizon lost their mind in the alltel acquisition.
"In the meantime, Verizon's looking silly, slow, and out of touch."
Pretty much sums up all of their hardware offerings. I'd add crippled as well.
I want that iPhone soooo bad... if i could only get out of this damn contract
Hi Chris, as it turns out I think that in the long run Verizon is probably doing things the right way and that their subscribers in the end will benefit from it. The processes, procedures and more important testing that an 80 million sub operator like VZW does are time consuming, expensive and there for a reason and that reason is that these guys are very very serious about their network. It's not just an ad slogan, it's real and anyone who has worked at a vendor supplying these guys will agree that they are very very particular about subscriber facing things and few things are more subscriber facing than devices and the software on those devices.
Smaller operators, such as Bell with 6m subscribers vs VZWs 80m, have things a bit easier and can perhaps get away with cutting some corners that larger operators wouldn't cut. There are even large operators working wtih large device makers that end up with large disasters or at least a certain amount of pie on the face because they were either less than completely anal or were less than properly careful depending on your perspective. A recent example being the Express Music 5800 / AT&T (see http://nokiaexperts.com/nokia-5800-launch-fiasco-expect-future/) lauch, described as a disaster, fiasco or embarrassment which could have and should have been avoided had they only conducted proper testing. This is exactly the type of thing that the seemingly slow and plodding ways of VZW tends to prevent and this is exactly the type of thing that a shoot from the hip cowboy approach tends to generate.
More than most people probably appreciate, mobile networks are complex beasts with many moving parts. Things that should play nicely with others don't do so all the time and that is why it is important to carefully test and certify things if you actually give a shit about the end-user experience. It is sort of like the difference between prosumers/hobbyists and sys admins - prosumers love upgrades, sysadmins not so much because they understand that any change, even improvement, brings the opportunity to break something, often in unexpected ways.
Regardless, I can relate to the frustration that delays or a more conservative approach can create but it is in the name of reliability and in the end having a phone and network that work properly (remember, on wireless networks devices can impact the network as we saw with the 3G iPhone) are probably causes worth waiting a little bit for. That said, if you are looking to be at the forefront of deviceland, you probably have a GSM phone anyway, right?

If VZW was actively seeking to prevent such launches, they wouldn't have launched the Storm as they did. Did you use one with the initial firmware? What an inexcusable mess.
I had the Storm for one night, and what a night it was!
It's a good phone. the version I used had a lot of bugs, especially around the camera and UI controls layout - is it fixed yet?
Anyways, if you are interested, here's my summary of my 'one night stand with the BlackBerry Storm':

.122 firmware rocks
-I'm quite fast w/ the portrait QWERTY
-Opera Mini loads pages like this in 4-10 seconds
-It allows fast scrolling by using the scroll bar
-Battery life's 1-3 days depending on usage
-Tethering on 3G VZW has some pretty mean speeds, quite usable IMO
-The screen looks much crisper as does txt compared to the G1
-App World's finally starting to get some stuff worth using
-GUI's getting SO close to perfect
-Speaker's very loud and clear
-True multitasking now possible
-I can leave GPS on all the time wo/ battery drain unless using apps now
Um, fat chance, lazy big red...
where can i find that wallpaper?

Thanks Nikki!

Hey guys
In regards to this firmware... RIM doesn't have a say when the carrier releases the update....RIM makes the update and alerts the carrier that it's available. It's up to the carrier to decide if they want to release it or not....if bell and telus both have the 4.7.0.113 HandHeld software out and available then that means Verizon has it... they are just sitting on their hands about it.... does anybody remember when 4.5 launched? AT&T just finally pushed it to all their customers about a month ago and sprint also recently released it...
It's all the carriers’ decision. Not RIM's
.122 sucks, back to .113 for me. Post .113 does not always equal better. Just look at .114.
Hey does anyone know when this will be released? I bought my boyfriend the storm the end of january and have has so many problems we've been patiently waiting for this update.
And also do you know if it will be only availble via desktop manager or via wireless update too?
