Nokia N97 confirmed for Vodafone in July
We were going to lead this off by saying "start saving your quid," but let's be honest -- the way European carriers work, you'll probably be able to finagle a monthly rate that'll let you walk out of the shop having shelled out nothing or next to nothing for the hottest device in Nokia's lineup. Vodafone has confirmed that it'll be launching the N97 in July, which is longer than anyone would like to wait, but that's still probably within a few weeks of the phone's initial availability. Color us jealous.

how come europe gets all these high tech phones for free and then in america we end up paying 200 for a 3 megapixel cameraphone while they pay nothing for an 8 megapixel phone.
We are better?
I'd written a lenghty comment, but in the end found out it came down to this, and removed the rest:
Competition: With basically all carriers operating on the same frequencies, and all phones bar a few american ones being available unlocked, means they really got to compete directly against each other. And that pushes prices down.
You Americans are really getting ripped off by your carriers big time.
We are getting ripped off by the carriers. However, we are only paying ~$2.50/gallon for gas again - roughly 1/3 of what we would pay if we were in a location that would subsidize our phones - should we talk about car prices, food prices, housing prices - or really anything else where we are not really getting ripped off?
keep your "free" phones - I am staying right here in America!
@Ineed911
Missing the point here?
...and please do :)
The question was why the phones were more expensive in America, not "Whose country is the best to go shopping in" ;)
Do keep in mind that they can keep the prices so low because these phones are indeed subsidized. Many of these carriers in Europe, have tacked on text messaging, and internet etc to their plans. Which I dont believe you can take off. Although they pay a lower upfront fee, their monthly charges can be much higher to ours.
For example a similar plan to mine is 45 pounds, or roughly 90 USD excluding tax, when I only pay 55 USD, including tax.
Which brings up another point though. Why shouldnt someone who pays 150 USD for their phone bill not get a better subsidy in the US? Its because the US carriers like to screw us over.
You guys think you're being screwed in the USA... Think Canada. 3 yr contracts. Prices inflated on retail ends. Really only 1 GSM provider. You are correct in identifying lack of competition. Because of that, we also get really crappy stuff. I think Rogers only stopped selling the original Moto Razr a few months ago. Brutal.
-M.
@ Wako: I just looked at the Voda website and for 35 UK£ = 50.73600 US$ you get 600 mins, unlimited text and unlimited internet. That's far less than any provider in the US. On top of that if you pay the ~$300 you get a bran new X1, a phone that goes for $750+ unlocked.
It all appears to be a much better deal than in the US.
July?
I'm so bored of both my HTC touchHD and my Samsung Omnia.
I hope that at least the omniaHD or the HTC SuperStar or Thoth or maybe Toshiba's TG01 will come to the rescue at least by June.
life starts to gets boring without realizing when you start owning most if not all of the coolest gadgets in the world but not being able to spend enough time to discover and enjoy...
'Start saving your quid'? That isn't even a proper expression! :P
Good thing we didn't say it then! :)
lol, Chris is a smartass. I like him. :P
I really do wonder what all the fuss over the N97 is about. It's a boring phone with shit specs from 2007 (apart from the 32GB internal memory).
Youre an idiot..........Ive told you that before
PLZ DIE
What a troll.
AWESOME PHONE! But I already have 5800XM :)
And you're a stupid fanboy.
PLZ DIE.
Troll? If I'm a troll, why don't you prove me wrong? Fools. It seems that half of the people on Engadget Mobile are Nokia fanboys... saddening, really.
Too bad there aren't enough Nokia fanboys in the world to keep their profits, marketshare and sales from diving.
Proving you wrong: They kept their marketshare, which means every other manufacturer also have less sales. And they did actually *make* a profit.
The iPhone is a boring phone with shit specs from 2005.
This one is less shitty.
It seems all the trolls on Engadget are Apple Fanboys. We here on Engadget mobile like the fact that for the most part, we don't have trolls. You ruined that now.
Yeah, I'd rather have a phone with the worst camera currently available, no video capture, low resolution and no multi-tasking...oh wait.
Jealous much? Don't tell me, you have one of those basic suck phones from Verizon?
I don't know, but damn awesome that black/silver colour:P
Even though this thing is (presumably) coming out far later than it's competition (read iPhone, Pre, Magic etc) it'll sell. Nokia has that following, it'll do fine and will spawn a sh*tload of touchscreen based s60 phones.
That black one is looking sexy, too bad it's missing multitouch. I've become addicted to the finger gestures on my iPod Touch.
Am I the only one who finds "double-tap" single-touch zoom to be more accurate, easier and quicker than multi-touch zooming?
Nah, I'm cool with single touch too, so I can use it one handed as much as possible. Would be nice to have multitouch for the times I do use it with both hands of course.
In 2011: Phones with a slider on the side to change between one finger, and multifinger controls!
Finally it's out, I think it'll pass 5800 with much more popularity... First N device with touch screen. I read some review here http://www.mobilebond.com/nokia-n97-review-believe-me/ and I have to say iPhone 3G can't compare with this one...
The suggestion we Europeans would get anything for free is complete nonsense, in fact things are much more expensive here than in the States.
Here in Germany, the expected retail price for the N97 is 700 Euros - which is 900 USD!!! Subsidized with a contract phones are only marginally cheaper (if at all!), because for new phones you are charged with high monthly bills (20-25 Euros fixed basic fee per month PLUS expensive per minute talking fee). Adding all up over the 2 years you pay the same price (or even more) as if you had bought it without a contract and had used a cheap prepaid card by one of the many supermarket discounters. Plus subsidized means a crippled phone being branded (features disabled/changed by Vodafone) and locked to Vodafone.
For example, the IPhone was brought to Germany by T-Mobile. Until only 2 or 3 months ago, you could not get the IPhone in Germany for under 2.000 Euros, which is 2.600 (!) USD - all costs over the 2 years contract added. So much for cheap phones in Europe.
Is that a new color scheme? last i remember, n97 was going to come in one full White and one full brown! that doesn't look brown to me!
Nice new color scheme, i want this want and my girl asked for the white version :-P
Can't wait for it.
The only real criticism i'd do to this phone would be the lack of multi desktops, if it keeps like that but maybe this lready changed. I want x main screen containing programs like the iPhone, details of appointments and tasks as do Windows Mobile and Symbian, and Widgets well organized ! The N97 seems to do the bigger part of this list, even if i don't understand the need of a 'program menu'. It's just useless. But something that has only programs like the iPhone is even worse.
This Nokia will be the best of all worlds when it will came out. With OVI ready, Nokia will have a strong system. When you look at the 5800 which sells like break, this one will definitly rock ! I will replace happily my old and brave N95-8GB :-P
y dnt usa get any nokia phones?
