Nokia E71x finally coming to AT&T on May 4?
We've been teased by the promise of the E71x for months now -- and of that time, we've been teased on a very official level for a solid three weeks -- but we've yet to get a solid release date out of AT&T. The popular rumor is that last-minute problems in the phone's custom FP2-based firmware (the original E71 runs FP1, you may recall) affecting email caused the holdup, and naturally, a mass firmware update on an endless sea of already-manufactured devices can be a bit of a production. Now, Nokia Experts is reporting that we'll finally see this thing hit shelves on May 4 and has a screenshot to back up the claim; at $99.99 on contract, it'll still be a steal by then, but we'd recommend they not wait any longer than that. Please, seriously.

Why is engadget (and, to be fair, others too) so excited about a phone that has basically been on the market for the better part of a year? I get the FP2 difference, but seriously, hasn't everyone who wanted an E71 got there's by now?
Zzzzz. Where's the Curve 8900 AT&T?
AT&T needs to stop f-ing around with this phone. I was looking forward to purchasing the E71x a month ago, but got tired of waiting for an undetermined date to come around and purchased a different phone.
Wouldn't it be better to have an UN-HACKED version instead of the "custom" read heavily modified and stripped down AT&T version? I don't particularly care for the way they force apps on devices and modify the menus. Can't change a ringtone on any phone they sell without seeing "Shop Ringtones". Granted all carriers do this, but being that this has been posted for around the $300 mark and AT&T will probably see it around $200, then maybe give you a "gift card" for $100, plus $36 activation/upgrade fee...doesn't seem like that much of a bargain. Again, the thing has been out for nearly a year now.
You actually can change your ringtone on most AT&T phones if it's under a ceratin size. Under 300kb on some and under 600kb on others. Just sync your phone to your computer, or put the ringtones on a memory card, then add them to the correct folder.
I too have been waiting for this phone...Yeah I know it's been out for a while but I heard what att but into the phone would be better than the US version. ( MobiTV and other apps) but I was wondering if it worked with Youtube or not plus how is the battery life. Overall it comes down to what you like better the Bold or the E71x. TouchWiz I really didnt like it even though everything else was good on the impression when I tried it out. 2 more weeks to wait that's all.
OK, I am biased, I work for InnoPath, a company that does OTA management including Firmware Over The Air (FOTA) so I am a bit biased, but I am surprised that this device was delayed. Symbian FP2 supports FOTA, meaning that this device could be updated over the air. One of the uses of FOTA is helping operators and OEMs meet tight shipping schedules by giving the option of shipping a device and then updating the firmware after the device is deployed in the field. This helps get phones out the door faster, obviously a win when trying to sell phones and subscriptions while ensuring that the subscriber has a good experience.
After the device is in the field, FP2 devices such as the E71x support SCOMO software management, meaning that the operator, in this case AT&T, could push new or updated apps over the air. In theory some of the custom ROM hassles could be avoided by using SCOMO to push the various operator apps to the handset after it ships, again ensuring a good subscriber experience while getting the device out the door.
MarMan - I would expect battery life of the E71x to be very similar to the E71, open the phone and you see that the battery actually takes up most of the volume inside the case - pretty cool stuff, actually. My experience with the E71 is that the battery lasts far longer than batteries in devices such as the HTC Tytn II or Touch Pro T7272.
Finally someone who knows what they are talking about here. Thank God there is someone here who is not an Iphone or Blackberry Fanboy. Very intelligent post's FOTA, I applaud you.
Go out and get the factory E71. This thing sucks no thanks to AT&T. Yeah FP2 is really nice to have, and we all expected the usual suspects to be missing (printers application, the dictionary, active notes, the intranet app, the internet telephone, the search app, the modem app, the download! app, Nokia Maps, the GPS data app, Landmarks, and the barcode reader) but the idiots took out the two things that really separate this phone from the crowd besides its good looks, one of them I had a feeling they'd mess with. What made the E71 different - the ability to have two home screens, and the one-touch keys that are signature Eseries are nowhere to be found on this device. I looked everywhere through the manual, and the tips and tricks pdf listed on this guy's site. Nothing. The calendar key only takes you to the calendar, the contacts key takes you to the address book, and the email key takes you to the messaging menu! There is no dual functionality like there is on a regular E71. This is why Nokia doesn't sell phones through AT&T, and should not sell smartphones through them. I really hope that this hold up is in fact because of the missing dual functionality of the one touch keys and the dual home screens, but somehow I think AT&T simply put the 6650 firmware on this and did the minimal changes to make it work with the E71 and isn't going to add what should be there. Let's hope I'm wrong.
I am very happy with my E71 using at&t service and going to get my dad the E71x when it comes out.
should i get this? or wait for the BB Niagra on Verizon? im on VZW and get my upgrade opened up this week, so i'm getting impatient and nervous about the decision i have to make.
The best slimmest and Business smart phone on the Market and at $100 it's a steal. This is an awesome deal with AT&T. It would behoove all to get one of these Symbian Nokia phones for work or pleasure. I believe it supports up to 16 GB of
memory as well. Great Job Nokia.
I thought this was supposed to have Wi-Fi. It's 11:16 Central Time where I live, and the phone is already on the ATT site. It's still May 3rd. There's no mention of Wi-Fi ANYWHERE on this phone.
