Android 1.5's widget support gets detailed
One of the huge features missing from Android at its initial launch was proper widget extensibility -- as far as the official SDK was concerned, what you saw on the home screen when you took your phone out of the box was what you got, no questions asked. Fortunately, this is a marquis addition in 1.5, and the official Android Developers Blog is detailing exactly how this is all going to go down. In short, it looks like devs have complete control -- as it should be -- with the ability to infinitely tweak widget update intervals and appearance. As any G1 owner can attest, this action can't possibly come soon enough.

sweet! I can only have so many clocks and pictures, the search bar is useless.
Widgets are great, but they are much more convenient if the UI includes a side bar to find a home for them like in Samsung TouchWIZ otherways they will end up crowding the little screen.
So is cupcake being delayed again? Last I heard it had been delayed to April, but that looks false as well unfortunately.
I talked to a TMO rep yesterday that said she didn't know if they'll be releasing cupcake or any other update at all.
This is awesome but..... WHAT THE HELL HAPPENED WITH YESTERDAYS LAUNCH EVENT?????
Its almost as if it was erased.... and no one is talking about it either.
Did the leak re Sidekick LX convince them to scrap it? Did it happen at some secret location (perhaps the Illuminati planned it)?
Hmmmmm I smell a conspiracy.... or could be my gassy stomach... I wont deny I have problems.
Ok...so I'm not going crazy...someone else noticed that no one has had anything up about the launch party...
I was thinking the same thing....
I don't know that it matters, I was told by 'Julia' at TMo yesterday that they are not sure that they will be releasing any further updates for the G1... at all.
All I want is some kind of calender widget, similar to what Blackberry has. Just a list of upcoming events... that's all I ask.
Download the newest app call tcalender... it's not a widget but it is an app that puts a shortcut on your homescreen with the date and it updates itself everyday. Then when you click on it, it will direct you to your calender app. Pretty neat... At least till cupcake comes out.
Just get the QuickCalendar app. It put the upcoming events (you can configure) in the notification window. It's difficult to describe. Just give it a shot. It's really good.
@Stephen: If you're relying on the carrier to keep a smartphone up to date.. you're doing it wrong. The beauty of Android is you're NOT enslaved to T-Mo for updates.
No need to wait for tmobile to release an update. Its been already released and I have 1.5 on my G1 ( thanks to haykuro from xda-developers).
I know that Android 1.5 is out for developers... but I don't want to have to hack the stupid update on my computer and then lose the use of the Market, like some people have been having problems with. I just want T-Mobile to stop screwing around. A very large number of people have bought these phones with this new platform because of the fact that it's full updatability and Marketplace. Now people have been waiting for the one Update that has been promised to them and time and time again... nothing. Not to mention the fact that the Marketplace is supposed to be changed from it's Open Source Marketplace (from what I've heard... don't hold it to me haha) to a Closed Market. There was supposed to be a launch party... nothing. In January there were already talks of this "Cupcake" branch making this new and improved platform that will totally revamp the G1. Now we've been waiting for how long?.. 4 stupid months! I say that if T-Mobile values there customers as much as Sprint (with the new Palm Pre) and AT&T (with the new iPhone 3.0) then they will own up to there word and make their customers happen. I love this phone... but let's face it... it's not perfect. Now T-Mobile has the opportunity to make it that much better and comparable to the NEW GUYS IN TOWN... and yet again... we wait! I love T-Mobile for their prices and I love Android for it's new approach to Smartphone UI but I don't feel like the love is coming back in my (or any of the millions of users) direction. I'm sure many of you understand and agree with what I'm saying.
Sorry... I didn't spell some that stuff correct and I didn't realize my I used some of the wrong words in some of my sentences haha. I'm really not an idiot... just trying to watch Comedy Central and type something angry all at once... toooooooo many emotions at once haha.
