"Insider" Sprint doc details the Palm Pre for new users, other boring minutiae
If you've been looking for a window into the life of the Palm Pre once you're a real, actual, not pretend user, a poster at Inside Sprint Now who claims to be a rep for the provider may have some answers for you. In what appears to be pretty much the entire "quick start" guide (or whatever kind of connected, web-centric name Palm will give it), the anonymous writer reveals the ins and outs of how to get around on your new phone. Here's some of the more interesting tidbits from the document -- which, mind you, could just be the wild imaginings of someone with way too much time on their hands:
Finally, one of the more interesting components of this post is pictured up above -- a guide for managing cards (and memory, consequently), and a walkthrough of how to reset or hard reset the device. Okay -- we know, not exactly the juiciest scoop in the world here, but Palm isn't giving us much to work with. You guys about ready for this thing to drop?
Update: People, if it wasn't clear enough (or if you didn't take the time to read the post), we don't have confirmation of this being an "official" document -- it looks like a very convincing leak, however. Don't start selling off your stock just yet.

- Palm / Sprint will provide a "Palm profile," which will allow for OTA updates of software, App Catalog downloads, and online backups of contacts, calendars, apps, and preferences. Interestingly, this sounds like it could be related to web services we've seen mentioned in Palm's SEC filings.
- There will be some kind of PC-based "Data Transfer Assistant" which will allow users to migrate old Palm OS data to the phone -- but it appears to be a one-way street.
- The Pre will require a Simply Everything / Simply Everything data plan, or a Business Essentials Plan.
- Highlighting text (for copy / paste) duties in web pages won't be possible -- which is kind of a huge bummer.
- The Pre won't support Sprint services such as Sprint Music, Sprint PictureMail, or Sprint Digital Lounge.

I would try #6 before #5.
I am ready to throw my Sanyo clam shell in the garbage. Hurry up, Palm/Sprint...
Can you atleast say it will have TRUE MMS Support instead of saying it wont have Sprint Picturemail cause then people think its the same whereas Sprint PictureMail is Sprint software, and MMS is first-party? Ad that it wont have Sprint Music or Sprint Digital Lounge is because there is Amazon for Musc and Palms App Catalog. Alot of people will misconstrue this.
Thanks.
Yeah, my first assumption after "no Sprint PictureMail" was that I'd be re-living the horror days of my mogul, treo 800w, curve (before the WM and BB apps to allow proxy MMS) emailing my pics to phone numbers...hated that! So will this have true MMS then? Sprint needs that all around to be honest - sick of this crappy wannabe mms that they have to make workarounds for.
ISN seems very legit, he's always real careful about not saying anything that would contradict NDA. I'd trust him with this
If this truly does require a SIMPLY Everything plan (and not just an Everything plan...i.e. the $99 plan vs. any data plan), then Sprint is really going to squash their only hope of a comeback-kid winner here. Sprint/Palm have a hard enough time convincing customers to ignore the iPhone hype for the Pre, but to suggest you have to pay $99 minimum is obsurd. Hopefully this is a lost in translation moment and it just means you must have an Everything data plan which in turn was translated to Simply Everything.
Good grief read the article before you post.
"The Pre will require a Simply Everything / Simply Everything data plan, or a Business Essentials Plan."
Everything data plan + voice = $69/mo
keep in mind this is a very early document, assuming it is legit the plan requirements could be for new subscribers thereby letting old SERO users get by. Here's hoping.
It doesn't have full copy and paste!! ROFL ROFL ROFL. What ridiculousness.
Just confirms why I'm much more interested in the TouchPro II than the Palm Pre. I started my smartphone experience way back with my old Kyocera 6035 Palm phone and it's successor, the 7135 Color Palm clamshell phone still ranks as one of my favorite phones of all time (there's a market for those, people! The only problem with the Windows based Motorola Nextel offered was the lack of a touch screen). I really miss using the Palm OS but I was a lot happier with my Mogul than I was any Palm based phone the past few years and the Pre doesn't look like it's going to be bringing me back into the fold any time soon. Not a huge fan of the WIN OS but once I'm done customizing it, it's okay. Still better than the iPhone (sorry Apple heads).
I was really interested in the Palm Pre, but now I'm almost kind of not sure that I even want the phone anymore! One of my biggest complaints with the HTC Touch (I had it for a week and gave it back to them) was the fact that Sprint services weren't available on it! So, you can't download ringers, games, screen savers, or assign call tones!! How dumb is that?! Why would Sprint (or any phone company) launch a phone that's not compatible with their services?!
I've had touch screen PDA phones for a long time. I have never felt the need to use Sprint's services to download ringtones, games or background pictures. I can go on the Internet to get them or just make them myself. I don't need some dumbed down program to do it for me.
That is the advantage of having full Internet browsing capabilities on these things. I never even sync it with my computer, there are tons of free programs that sync with the Internet for me. Why would anyone want to be restricted to only what the service provider has, when the whole point of the phone is having the freedom of a computer without the weight or size of one?
I watch Hulu on my ancient, 2 year old phone, make ringtones for it and can crop any picture to become a screensaver. Sprint is only good if you want pop music and don't know how to rip or edit anything yourself.
Hello, I got the new Palm Pre on Saturday. Very exited about my new toy, I used it all day and by 10pm my battery ran out. phone powered off, I conected it to charge and saw a plug in the screen. I woke up Sunday morning and phone had a black screen and never recovered.
I took it to sprint and they gave me a new phone.
Today after synchronizing my Facebook profile, my phone froze, cannot get it to work.
