Microsoft's "Pink" smartphone could rival iPhone on Verizon
It's crazy, we know. Just hours after hearing shockingly believable whispers that Apple's white-hot iPhone 3G could be sashaying over to Verizon Wireless, in flies a Wall Street Journal report asserting that the suits in Redmond are (also?) in talks with America's largest carrier. 'Course, we've heard rumors that Microsoft was banging out a smartphone behind closed doors for centuries now, but much to our chagrin, there's no mention of "Zune" in "Project Pink." Instead, we're told that said handset is a touchscreen-based multimedia phone that will aim to extend the Windows Mobile OS while "adding new software capabilities." Not surprisingly, the article also mentions that Windows Marketplace would be front and center on the phone, and potentially most interesting is this tidbit: "a third-party is expected to make the device." Hey HTC -- seen any strange calls originating from the 425?

Really!?!?
Apple already has the Pink beat, WM is probably the slowest, clunkiest OS out there.
Coming from a current iPhone, ex Blackjack user.
Windows Mobile 6 is pretty gnarly, when compared to current mobile operating systems, but I have to point out that you had the phone that ties with the Motorola Q for the worst windows mobile phone in the history of windows mobile phones.
I wouldn't judge WinMo by these phones... the blame lies squarely on Samsung and Motorola.
Oh, okay. You've used the WM 6.5 OS, and probably 7.0. I mean, you must have since you're so confident about the OS's speed and feel. Personally, I'd rather not put all my fanboy apples in one basket. Mostly because I'm not brainwashed.
Coming from a current iPod Touch owner, as well as a *very happy* Samsung Omnia (running WM 6.1 Pro) owner.
I'm no Apple fanboy by any means, I was a Windows using, Dell DJ listening, Windows Mobile calling, and Xbox-playing Microsoft person. Now I have an iPod, an iPhone, a MacBook Pro, and an Xbox 360.
Sometimes the grass is greener on the other side. Vista really put me off the edge as far.
What's WM 6.5 but a interface redesign so it's more touchscreen-friendly. Same old 6.0/6.1 base OS underneath it. Microsoft has alot to prove with Windows 7 and Windows Mobile 7.
If Verizon did this, I feel I could be compelled to forgive them for all their past wrong doings.
You mean like charging you $2.00+ to download a song to your phone?
It had better be a great phone
I like 6.5 and obviously this phone is running it, but I have to assume that it has to be a PPC and not just a smartphone. I cant imagine 6.5 without the touchscreen. The only problem with 6.5 is that the today screen is as is and you cannot customize it like you could with 6.1 and TF3D.
I wonder if SPB MS3 works on 6.5. That is one of the nicest, and most useful front-ends I've ever used.
If these ads at the top are to be believed, the Zune HD is going to be an AT&T device.
Right below the time, it says 3G AT&T. The pink cube is sort of obscuring it.
Maybe AT&T is looking at this as a retort to Apple buddying up to Verizon?
you can in fact customize the today screen in 6.5. basically just requires some text file editing. or the wonderful folks at xda-developers have whipped up some nice customization tools.
oh and in reference to "TheAngryGamer", even on my old htc kaiser, windows mobile 6.5 flies. and i'm only running release candidate 1 (essentially still beta). much much faster than wm 6/6.1. it's not revolutionary, but it is a big step in the right direction. don't knock it till you've tried it, or however the saying goes.
now if only windows mobile could run on capacitive touch screens....
SPB mobile works fine with 6.5 at the early builds.
OK, so who photoshopped a notional WM7 onto a notional Zune HD (http://www.engadget.com/2009/04/10/is-this-the-zune-hd/) and called it Pink? Nothing very rock solid here about anything shown. As far as OS capabilities, I use WM and my wife uses an iPhone, so I get to play with both. As far as ease of use, the iPhone has it, but it should, it doesn't do much. WM has a lot more capability, IMHO, and that contributes to it's somewhat shakier stability, and responsiveness. MS doesn't have the draconian hold over what users do with their devices and what developers spawn, that Apple does. Don't think that will change with iPhone v3. You'll get to do a few more things that I've been doing for years. In any case, if the rumor of a Pink, whatever that is, is true, I'm looking forward to it. I already like her music anyway.
"Could" is a mighty big word when the product in question is so vaporous.
What the hell is "425"?????
That's the area code for Seattle, WA :)
according to insiders at VzW in prod dev there is slippage & much disappointment over the PINK.. No competition for the iPhone.
This happens time and time again. Every new MP3 player is supposed to take down the iPod, every new smartphone is supposed to take down the iPhone. Aren't you tech journalists sick of the headlines already? I've been hearing this crap since about '05 at least.
Since 2005? A mere FOUR years? That's a lifetime to you? How old are you, like 10? Umm, here's a clue: eventually EVERY company and top selling item gets overtaken. Just ask GM, Xerox, Seiko, IBM, Standard Oil, etc. about how they could never be dethroned. Shit even your precious Apple used to own 100% of the personal computer market at one point. And one day, the iFone and EyePod will be dethroned. It's the way things work, NO ONE ever rules forever.
