Windows Mobile 6.5 goes gold, so says the Twitterverse
Twitter isn't usually a "source familiar with the situation" in these kinds of cases, but this time around it's a little different -- the word is coming directly from the official Windows Mobile Dev Team Twitter account. Quoth the team: "Windows Mobile 6.5 is DONE... complete..." which should give manufacturers ample time to roll upgrades and firmwares for new devices well before Microsoft's previous statements that we should expect 6.5 in the field toward the end of the year. Of course, at this point, most eyes are already looking on the horizon toward version 7 -- but let's put the cart before the horse, shall we?

Mobile-Review said this was awful that they didn.t actually fix much beyond UI problems
Wootness, I love the new homescreen...sooo much better than the standard WinMo Pro today screen. It looks more like the Standard homescreen now, which is awesome.
SE - PLEASE PUT ON XPERIA :)
Crazy, one Ugly as can be wallpaper, but really TEXT based UI?
is that the best M$ can do? How about some nice icons, sheesh...
they have icons when you scroll to them. and there are icons when you get to the app chooser and file system. Maybe you should look things up before you jump to conclusions. This is much like the original but more sleek and finger friendly look.
Been using 6.5 on my Touch HD for a couple of weeks now ( THanks, xda-developers !) and am pretty unimpressed.
They really, really would have been better off using the manpower to add to the WM 7 team.
That new home screen is just a Today Plugin, which means you cant use any other Today screen plugins with it.
They've increased font sizes and made menus more finger friendly.
The new Start menu is rather clumsy too and not configurable enough.
Oh, and in these days of smartphones being multimedia devices - They have not updated Media Player or the photo & video gallery. Both of these are total, total crap(Compare to HTC's music player and album software )
Now if MS were to announce Zune software to add in to 6.5, that might please me.
Final thoughts ? Lipstick on a pig ;)
6.5 is great.. dont get me wrong wm is no where near apple polish but no one is expecting that, yet.. its WAY better than 6.1.. enough to snatch a few iphone guys.. better scrolling, menus are improved so much, and the today screen may not be as flashy as touch flo 3d but its simple and well thought out, there are already new icons, themes, and widgets.. they have opera, weather, twitter, and facebook ready to go.. but on the other hand wm alone still has some work to do.. but the wm community handles tha rest... if wm7 is really a ground up rebuild than well be in for a good os because wm finally gets it with 6.5.. there is only so much you can do to refresh wm6.. but until android and web os develop or bb and apple step it up 6.5 evens the playing field
I have been running this for a couple of weeks on my diamond. I actually really like it. But then again I am just a sucker for pretty interfaces.
Where did you go to get the 6.5 cab file?
Hey Palm - I know Sprint won't do it, but how about a 6.5 build for your 800w users? I know it would just be turd polishing, but it would make my wife happy since she's going to inherit mine when I get the Pre.
I am running 6.5 on my AT&T Fuze with the SBP 3.0 interface because the HTC TouchFlow is still a bit buggy with this new version.
Basially, 6.5 is rock solid on my device with a slight increase in battery utilization. 6.1 uses to crash every once in an while, It usually did not fully crash but I always experienced performance degradation or loss of functionality over time like bluetooth headset no longer connecting, delay in menu operations or dialer related issues. I did not experience any of that with 6.5.
I may not be fun at all with the win 6.5 new welcome screen but SBP front-end and 6.5 as the engine is a winning combination for me. I at last have a stable phone as I always suffered crippling stability related issues from the 5.0 days. I can hold off on the iphone purchase that I was almost about to make as I was literally about to sell my HD on ebay.
Ive been using windows mobile 6.5 on my At&T Tilt for about a month now and I can say without a doubt it is the best version of windows mobile I have run across. The user menus are sleeker, the scrolling is much improved and the speed is off the charts. Everyone in this comment section has been spot on in their praises and critiques of 6.5, however it really is up to personal taste. If you have a device which can run window mobile 6 or above get over to xda-developers, read the tutorials and flash a good 6.5 rom and you wont be disappointed.
Just so everyone knows, the Xbox Dashboard (NXE), Zune and now Windows Mobile all have very similiar Interfaces. I believe this is something obviously planned to prepare for something coming....."Pink" perhaps? ZuneHD?. I also believe that HTC's leaked specs for the "Superstar" is a new WM "Iphone" competitor. It is the only device (from my knowledge) that hasn't any image of it, all the other leaked phones do. It also has "tegra", 3.7 inch screen, and the amount of ram specs that microsoft gave for "pink", either a device or new platform for microsofts iphone competitor. It is also stated as having WM6.5, and not WM7...which leaves me to believe it will be released this year ( not to mention it was on HTC's 2009 Lineup leak). Whether or not this "Superstar" will be apart of pink or not, many should be very interested in this device as it is the first to use Nvidia's new platform....that alone makes me want it....and want it now!
