Rootless Android 1.5 available for G1 now, with or without T-Mobile USA's help
After delays, multiple false alarms, and staggered launches, we'll admit: our patience is being tested with this whole Android 1.5 situation on T-Mobile USA's G1, and we imagine there are plenty of users who feel the same way. Previously, it took root access -- a process many lay users would rather not undertake -- to shoehorn 1.5 onto an official carrier-branded unit, but we now finally have a legit, signed build that'll install without any hackery whatsoever. This release will give you all the splendors 1.5 has to offer, preserve myFaves access, and requires little more than a file copy to your microSD card plus a couple key combinations to install, so it's pretty much a must-have if you're tired of waiting for T-Mob to do its thing. Now on to Donut, eh?[Via Phandroid]

Has Anybody tried it out yet, I'm a little Nervous to do it without confirmation.
Thanks!
I have -- painless, works like a champ!
Works great, have no worries.

omg its working im doing it
if anyone wanna do it just ask me i know how to
Tried it, works amazingly. Like the keyboard and video, but most of all love the fact that you can save individual contacts to the home screens.
Ive updated 5 phones now. It works flawlessly.
Just follow the simple directions....
1.) download the file to your OC and rename it to update.zip (make sure you didnt name it update.zip.zip).
2.) Connect the phone to your pc and copy it to the root/main folder on your sd card. The root folder is the top most folder.
3.) Shut off your phone.
4.) Press power and home at the same time.
5.) The boot loader screen comes on, open your keyboard and press alt + L at the same time, this will initiate the load.
6.) Pres alt + S at the same time and the load will begin.
7.) When its done you will be prompted to press home + back (NOT POWER)....
8.) You should now see the chip initialization and the install of the new radio.
From here the phone will reboot. For me it happened once, but some people said theirs rebooted 2 or 3 times.
THATS IT!
Enjoy the love that is CUPCAKES :)
P.S. The auto rotate screen is not on by default. Go to Home -> Menu -> Settings -> Screen and Display. Scroll down to the orientation check-box and check it.
Also underneath that is the transitions selection which does a nice little sideways swipe when it switches from screen to screen.
So far Ive got to say its excellent. The onscreen keyboard is a pleasure to use! The browser is so much faster as well as Maps. Maps just load... period.... you scroll its there.
The camera also is soooo much faster and you can actually get REALLY nice shots now. Since the button is an actual event on the screen, when you press it, it auto focuses and takes the shot. So you dont lose focus and its really quick plus the last picture you took stay as a thumbnail on the upper corner.
Uploading to Picasa Web is effortless and so is uploading to youtube.
THIS IS... what Android should have been from the beginning.
Hey thanks man. It worked perfectly for me.
These directions worked great for me as well. Thanks a lot! The only thing that threw me off was what exactly the "boot loader screen" was. (in case anyone else is trying, this is the black and white G1 screen that comes up every time you turn on your phone)
Also, I was able to download the zip directly from the phone's browser and then using one of the many file management programs from the Market, renamed and moved it to the right place. No computer required!
Finally I have cupcake! Even though T-mobile still has yet to release it :-\
aces on the instructions. thanks.
i need help
what am i doing wrong? i downloaded it from the computer and tried to upload it to my g1. but when i try to load it from the loader screen, it says that the verification failed. what do i do?
The only catch with this, and it may be just me. The first time I did a manual install instead of waiting for T Mobile to hit the bit red button weird shitty behavior started to occur on my G1. Freezes, crashes, 10 seconds to get to the "desktop", bluetooth problems, 4 dropped calls in a row, etc. Now it most likely was just chance that this behavior started just after I manually upgraded back in December. But I tried everything else to fix it, going so far as using a JF build.
Two weeks ago I took it in to T Mobile and they replaced it with a new G1. No problems since, so while I'm capable of doing this upgrade myself. I've got a Pavlovian response to the idea of manually upgrading. *shrugs* I may do it anyways if it looks like enough people are upgrading without issue. I want that creamy cupcake goodness damn it.
Fuck it. I ain't a dog.
Hmmmmm, i keep getting a no signature error...........
This is nice. I'm finally beginning to forget that I gave my iphone to my wife! The cake is not a lie!
hah, nice portal reference.

But it is nice to not hsve to wait anymore!
1.5 is great...
So is this the official build that we should be getting OTA next week?
works great for me
is their a way for you to be able to check the staus of the update. how do you know when your gonna get im in ohio of the u.s has anyone got theres yet in the u.s
i keep getting a signature error, what am i doing wrong?
Steve are you renaming the file correctly? If so try re-downloading it, maybe the DL corrupted.
I'm wondering if i have to update to RC33 before updating to cupcake.
I just installed this morning, fresh out of bed and I must say it works seemlessly...I'm enjoying the enhancements of the OS.
I just got my G1 (less than a day out of the box), will installing this void my warranty? I'm not sure about the policy.
Cj
this is a operating system update it will not void any warranty!
It also has system upgrades like touch screen keyboards and more!
