Android 1.5 update for T-Mobile G1 now rolling out, for real this time

There have been a whole bunch of false starts on this, but honestly, folks -- for real, we're not messing around -- T-Mobile has finally started distributing Android 1.5 over-the-air to American G1 owners. This means that anyone who hasn't taken the time to install the update of their own accord is just about to get hooked up without any intervention whatsoever, bringing third-party widget support, a virtual keyboard, email and messaging improvements, a revised UI, and of course, an endless font of delicious pastries that will make you morbidly obese if you eat enough of them over time. Honestly, while you're waiting for the update to arrive, hop on the Bowflex for a few minutes. It's not going to kill you.[Thanks to everyone who sent this in]

Manually Installed and then installed the HTC IME Soft Keyboard apk a while ago now its even Better than the default soft Keyboard, I'd recommend anybody to get it and its so easy also.

I followed these directions
1).download and install ASTRO file manager app from the Android market, it's free.
2). unzip the file and place the apk on your sd card.
3) open ASTRO and find the htc ime apk (make sure your phone is unmounted, if you mounted it to place the apk file on your sd card)
4). when you find it it will ask if you want to install, do so.
5). go to settings, then locale text, and unselect android keboard, then select touch input.
You're all set.

Too late. I switched to BlackBerry yesterday. Sorry Google. you just didnt cut it for me.
Same here, switched to a Nokia e71 two days ago. G1 kept on locking up on me in the call log, great device wasn't so great at making phone calls in my experience.
Yeah I'm so tired of cupcake already. The ridiculously drawn out release for a few features that should have been in the original version was pretty lame.

sooo i recieved the update late Saturday night, and what i'm gathering from the few comments is that there was an update that installed a keyboard. i didnt get that, what i did instead was just install the CHOMP app from the market. is there a way i can get that keyboard a few of you are referring to?
You just need to go to any field that takes a text - like browser address box, reply to message or email etc and the Virtual keyboard would popup - if you do not have your physical KB out
Wow! Android is just getting a virtual keyboard now? I thought the bug advantage of open source was the speed bringing this stuff to market.
Likewise, when can I get my hands on a Donut as my iPhone contract is ending in July and I want due diligence before buying my next phone.
Ok looks like Cupcake is finally installing on my device. It started a couple of days ago but then hung up halfway through the download. I tried to restart the download and for the next two days it kept saying that my system was updated even though it was still on 1.1. 8 months of ownership and I still like my phone but not being able to install programs to the SD card is a major pain. Oh well at least there are new Android phones coming out with better battery life and more features. The biggest hurdle for me was the lack of the 3.5mm headphone jack I'm glad that's finally fixed with this update so now I have A2dp Bluetooth support. It sucked having all that music on my phone and not being able to listen to it. I guess I better go but an upgraded battery!
