HTC Hero build of Android ported to G1
The process isn't for the faint of heart, but considering the reward here, the trials and tribulations of hacking the hell out of your G1 might just be worth it. As usual, the bright chaps over at xda-developers have managed to obtain the HTC Hero's heavily-skinned Android ROM and port it to the G1, offering a totally unique look and feel with all manner of enhancements and customizations not found on a stock Android 1.5 build. Getting it all going involves flashing your device, connecting to it with the Android debugger while it's stuck in an endless boot loop, and messing around with some other stuff, so yeah -- if you're a greenhorn you might want to get a pro to take care of this for you and make sure that you're comfortable with the very real possibility of bricking your baby. Hey, it's just a phone, right? What's the worst that can happen?

Do want! But i scared the bejeezus out of myself when my 1st jesusfreke flash to 1.5 and it looped at the loading animation forever. I reflashed and it worked the second time but when it was looping.....aaaaaaaaaaaaargh!!!!!!!! anyway yes i want this or some shinier interface. love the phone but the interface could be so much better. some of the alternative GUIs are mindblowing. but i'm not gonna risk this upgrade. i'll just wait patiently like a good little android....
does anyone know a rather simple way of installing this? I can't get past an error....
hopefully the error doesn't include freezing at the "Tmobile G1" Screen!!!
yea u got to push app_s to /system/sd/app_s
well the one with the g1 sign on the screen stuck is OK. Just take out your sd card, and transfer your update with a card reader or another phone that has a micro. then put that sd back in it. Pull the battery out and load it up, and you'll be in the hero...
yea i got this on my dev 1 phone its mad sluggish but its a real improvement from stock
Have you tried the Speedup for Hero? It's still sluggish but a lot more bearable. Its really an awesome port.
