Sony Ericsson ditching Memory Stick Micro cards in favor of MicroSD

Sony Ericsson already tipped its hand by including nothing but plain old microSD in its recently announced Satio, Yari and Aino phones (not to mention the K850 even further back), but it looks like TrustedReviews has now gotten the official word straight from the source: SE is dropping Sony's own Memory Stick Micro format (or M2) in favor of the decidedly more standard microSD. While it's not clear if that'll be a clean break from here on out or not, Sony Ericsson Global Marketing Director Fortuné Alexander did say that the company is "moving in that direction," and at least a few more still unannounced handsets have apparently already made the switch. Next thing you know Sony will be dumping UMD. Oh wait.

things like this should be forced
Hopefully the rest of Sony does the same. I hate Memory stick. It costs twice as much as an equivalent SD card.
That was the intent. ;)
i agree. i do love Sony products but i'm much more inclined to buy something if i know i can use stuff i already have lying around the house with it. that's the reason i never bought many UMD movies (got 2 super cheap and that was it), why would i pay DVD prices for a movie i can ONLY watch on my PSP and that has less features. this was driven home even further by the point that i could easily rip a DVD and watch it on the same PSP, as well as a bunch of other devices.
my PS3 has Memory Stick, SD, and Compact Flash support (as well as support for many other non-propriety accessories), so maybe this is an indication that that is spreading to the rest of the the company. again, i'm much more inclined to buy something that i use with stuff i have lying around than something i have to buy all new accessories for.
Welcome to 2007, Sony.
Drop the godforsaken fastport and I'll be more inclined to buy an SE phone.
It's about time!! M2 cards are too expensive compared to microSD!! And with nothing but Sony products able to use them, they are a bad deal.
Incredible !!!
Give us microUSB instead of the gay sonyEricsson specifique jack plus a 3,5mm audio jack all the time and maybe i will love you !
FINALLY! Sony finally looked around the room and realized that all the other competing standards had died out...SM, xD, CF (yeah, I know it's still used in DSLRs).
Hell freezes over...
It doesn't matter if M2 has higher transfer bandwidth if nobody uses it. This is what happens when you charge for your standard -- nobody will want it!
