iPhone 3G S announced: $199 16GB, $299 32GB, June 19
As endlessly predicted, Apple's unveiled a new iPhone today at WWDC, the iPhone 3G S -- the "s" stands for speed. Although it looks almost exactly like the 3G, it's much, much faster -- some tasks are almost four times faster. Data speeds are upped to 7.2Mbps HSDPA, and the camera is now a 3 megapixel unit with tap-to-autofocus and auto white balance -- and just as expected, it now supports 30fps VGA video recording with editing features. You're also getting a built-in compass, Nike+ support, and a new battery that offers 5 hours of 3G talk time and 9 hours of WiFi internet use. There are some surprises, too -- holding down the home button now enables a new voice control interface that lets you do everything from make calls to control iTunes, and Apple's touting a new "fingerprint-resistant oleophobic coating." New and end-of-contract pricing is set at $199 for 16GB and $299 for 32GB when it goes on sale June 19th Stateside and in 80 more countries in August -- and the current 8GB 3G will remain on sale for $99, effective immediately. You'll have to pay a bit more if you're mid-contract, though -- $299 for the 3G and $399/$499 for the 3G S.

so after watching the keynote, i'm still very happy buying a palm pre. still no multitasking on the iphone. so it looks like there are STILL two great brands of phones and providers for the smartphone user.
Lol, enjoy those 18 apps, pal.
To think that is all the apps the Pre will ever have is crazy. Palm has a far longer history of successful third party apps.
Sprint also has a better 3G network (http://gizmodo.com/5111989/the-definitive-coast+to+coast-3g-data-test) and the price point (w/ contract) is $380 to $480 _cheaper_ over the life of the contract.
iPhone (last gen): $99 plus 2 yr contract 450 minutes w/ data and text unlimited: $2,259.75
Palm Pre: $199 plus 2 yr contract 450 minutes w/ data and text unlimited: $1,879.75
Savings = $380
You can pay the iPhone premium to Apple and AT&T, but you'll be wasting your money for phone that is long since past cool and a subpar 3G network.
@skemme
Sorry but I was just looking at your post history. You sound like a huge Sprint corporate shill.
I wonder whats new under the hood. Did they switch over to OLED screens? New CPU or increase frequency? Increase Ram?
It has 2x the CPU speed and RAM. It appears to use the same type of screen as the iPhone 3G, not OLED, which is sad. :(
$200 more if you are on contract? It'd be cheaper to just cancel your contract, pay the $175 or less ETF and sign a new contract, no?
.....and then you would still have to buy the iPhone. your math=fail.
Cost to upgrade to iPhone 3G S 32GB while on contract: $499
Cost to cancel current contract, sign new contract and buy iPhone 3G S 32GB: $175 + $299 = $474
$474 < $499
SoCoolCurt=fail
Personally Im waiting for the new Touch Pro 2 or if MS will ever release a "Pink" device that has the WM7 Chassis 1 Specs. But this new iphone sure does sound tempting...
No, then you would be paying $175 cancel fee + the price of a new iphone 3GS
Cost to upgrade to iPhone 3G S 32GB while on contract: $499
Cost to cancel current contract and sign new contract with iPhone 3G S 32GB: $175 + $299 = $474
Plus, the ETF drops $5 for every month of service you've already paid for. The only issue is the cost of the activation charge, but you can usually get that waived if you are buying one of their more expensive phones or have a Premier account through your employer or college/university if you're a student.
Wow lol nothing to get exicted about but competition is sure great for us the consumers now with the palm pre out I'm sure apple is working hard fo bring a better device for next year this is almost the same as the current one and still no flash how lame and no mms for att until the end of summe that's even more sad
Hmmm not an iPhone owner but this update seems fairly modest especially in the midst of heavy competition from WinMo, android, palm, and Blackberry. I was expecting something with a bit mroe oomph...
No matter, I'm just waiting for the Samsung i7500 to get released and then I'll ditch my G1 for that.
No OLED is a bummer. Also, if you see the press conference AT&T has become the biggest obstacle to iPhone owners. No tethering and many other features being gimped for AT&T. This sucks, was so ready to get a 3GS based on the rumors but no OLED, no tethering, and new upgrade fees mean I'm going to skip this.
I'll be switching from tmobile to att come the 18th, the added cpu power and ram, and then everyone knows their will be additions available once we all jailbreak it. And my updates and ability to social network on an even faster speed are an A+.
The only thing that makes me say in the back of my head it would be best to wait for a good ol reliable win mo device or just grabbing a qwerty keyboard phone is the lack of the mms STILL! I mean with the genius's over at apple, ya think they would have gotten the damn hint already instead of having to wait till the end of summer for a friggen update. I MEAN COME ON PEOPLE!!!!!!!!!!
It's the iPhone... but faster!
Apple sure knows how to do an incremental upgrade.
Also, why would you pay $99 for an 8GB iPhone 3G when you could get a 16GB iPhone 3G S for only $199? It should be $99 for the 16GB iPhone 3G and the 8GB iPhone 3G should be free, after signing a contract of course. Those fat $30/month internet fees would be worth those prices.
Just Plain B O R I N G.
Thanks but No thanks Apple.
Keep your unimpressive Junk.
STUPID. I GOT VIDEOCALL, 3G, OLED SCREEN, WIFI, ALL IN MY NOKIA N85. ICRAP 3GS ITZ NOTHNIG NEXT TO NOKIA. CUZ THE THING THAT APPLE ARE DOING IT NOW.. I DID IT TWO YEARZ AGO WITH MY NOKIA. HOW THEY DARE TO PUT THE ICRAP 3G{S)shit NEXT TO NOKIA N97....HELL NO!!!!...STAY WITH NOKIA ANS SYMBIAN
Apple suck!..money suckers
I think everyone had their hopes way too high. It's a decent enough refresh. I'll be buying one... even though I have to pay $499, but then again I'll be paying less if I can sell my old 3G on craigslist. It's still better than the Palm Pre. Given what the iPhone already has and will have, multitasking is not enough to want me to switch.
lol in what way is it better than the pre other than having lots of app support?? I won't put down the Iphone is a good phone on a shitty 3g network but the palm pre sure can accomplish more than the iphone keep in mind pre has 3 days of life while the iphone is on 2. Ohh i forgot it was the magnetic built in compass thats so revolutionary.
It sure is a good needed update on features but most of it is stuff that has been around phones for quite some time.
All I know is RIMM's stock was down during the keynote and then popped back up after the iPhone was announced. I guess everyone else thought this was a yawner as well.
Is it me or is there just too much hype built into these announcements? I feel cheated. All I wanted was Exchange support and Snow Leopard NOW, not September. Once again its all about the iPhone but even that sucked... same tired form factor, same crowded interface, same silver bezel, no MMS, no tethering, still no flash, it's not worth the price of an upgrade if you ask me. Jailbreak your current iPhone and you'll be just as good. Don't even start on our carrier of forced choice. They are starting to get more like Verizon every day.
I seriously want to go on a technology hiatus.
I commend Apple for finally including accessibility for the visually impaired on the new iPhone, but without a physical keyboard the effort is useless. Please Apple, bring an iPhone with a physical keyboard!
Not having a physical keyboard seems to be a religious issue at this point. Adding one would acknowledge that some people prefer to feel a keyboard. The fact that 99% of people on computers use raised, physical keyboards, perhaps suggests something. People like physical keyboards over virtual on a tablet, projection, plastic mats, etc.
3G S(hit) is right. Let's make that stick.
It's amazing that my E71 offered all of this a year ago and then some.
But RIM and Nokia could stand to update the look of their OS a little. And a Blackberry's inability to seamlessly work with a Mac is beyond ridiculous.
For the record I have an E71, a Bold, and an iPhone 3G. I clearly have commitment issues but was hoping Apple would solve all my problems. (and world hunger, war, cancer)
I love my iphone, have the disposable income to upgrade but definitely will not. the existing 3g phone is plenty fast and the only thing that is really better is the camera. the outerbody styling is also getting a little dated.
This will be a bust, no lines. the kids want the better camera but i can't see that being a big sell.
wow, well i guess, if thats what u consider a better phone, it looks just like the first one to me, now that touch pro 2, what a difference now thats a phone change, not just a simple old OS change, but if the apple is for u, go ahead and get it, i’m waiting on that touch pro 2, is anyone else on the same page as me.
COME ON APPLE. I expected more, we're in 2009 da*n it. I was in love with the first IPhone, I liked the 2nd and now the 3GS it's just ok, but this is the one I will buy, 'cause I waited for the IPhone to come in my country and I thought that the 3G was not worth the price. I thought Apple would come with a better, much better phone in 2009.
And now this is it. Apple... I wanted a revolution not a reform!!!
This phone is capable to do things other phones did years ago :(
The predictions were logical steps to make (OLED screen, camera on the front, etc) but Apple didn't think so... It's just another money maker devicefor hem. But shame on me, I'll be in line for this on June 20th :( I have to change my phone (it's a Nokia 7310i) but I'm sure that IPhone 3GS will be this year's biggest disappointment, and I'm sure I'll change it next year if Apple would come up a better phone
I think apple and at&t are full of it, what they are bringing to this new iphone they could've had on the first gen, but no they add a lil every year to sucker us to buy the next new thing, think about it you can jailbreak a iphone 3g now and get video so it is capable, but know they add it to this and expect people to upgrade or buy a whole new phone for something they couldve already had on the phone, now they talking about you get a upgrade but no mms until later, thats bull, i feel if they know that people are getting fed up and we threatened them to go to another carrier or get a whole new phone and dont bother with the iphone then watch how things change, REAL QUICK!
Whoa. I was totaly against the iPhone, but when i saw this, i wanted one. ive never had feelings like that before. Damn apple's good.
where's the update to make the actual phone experience on an iPhone not completely suck? great, i can cram more fart apps and movies onto a phone that drops half its calls. meh. color me unimpressed.
apple and att has been making money off of all this isuckers for years now. everything this "new" phone could have been integrated in past versions.im not an apple hater (i own a itouch). all you isuckers keep making att money but they have the shhi... worst 3g network out there. sprints 2g was faster then this crap
hi apple ... people want a effin keyboard ... get with the program or go away ... Palm's web o/s blows the iphones o/s out of the water plus it's not going to be limited to a phone platform.
Palm is going to turn a lot of heads in 2009 and 2010. Apple is going to keep alienating people away from their brand because people aren't cool enough and can't afford the apple tax anymore.
Your upgrade pricing is incorrect. Here it is from Apple's website:
"For non-qualified customers, including existing AT&T customers who want to upgrade from another phone or replace an iPhone 3G, the price with a new two-year agreement is $499 (8GB), $599 (16GB), or $699 (32GB)"
http://www.apple.com/iphone/buy/
thats not right.
i work for att mobility.
If you want an iphone 3g s and you have the iphone 3g the 16gb will be $399 and the 32 will be $499
